Nikon Coolpix P500 review

As digital SLRs have become more accessible and less expensive, bridge cameras have had to change so they now have larger zoom ranges and more compact bodies than their predecessors.Nikon's Coolpix P500 sits in the middle of their 'Performance' range of compact cameras, which offer more features than the 'Style' range - including manual control and superior low light performance. In the case of the P500, it offers the largest zoom range of any current Nikon Coolpix camera and manual control, but lacks some more advanced features - such as raw image recording - and is priced at around £300.The huge zoom lens covers a range equivalent to 22.5-810mm on a 35mm camera. The wide-angle end is wider than most equivalent cameras, which can be useful for shooting in tight spaces and for exploiting the distortion of perspective as you get close to your subject. The 810mm equivalent telephoto is ideal for isolating distant subjects, and may even be suitable for wildlife and other areas of photography that require some distance between the camera and the subject.

Nikon Coolpix P500

Nikon's Coolpix P500 produces attractive exposures in all shooting scenarios, but is particularly strong in low light and during fast-action moments. We detected some problems with color accuracy, but this did not detract from overall image quality. Well here’s a result nobody saw coming. Nikon is one of the top manufacturers in the business and typically aces our color test. So we were shocked to find the Coolpix P500 is not accurate at all. Blues, greens, and yellows are all much darker than they should be, and unfortunately those latter two are thought to be the colors us humans are most sensitive to. Scenes were also undersaturated by about 5-10% depending on color mode. We really expected more from Nikon here. More on how we test color. With an error rating of approximately 4.3, this score is the worst of our comparison group, which does include Nikon’s own P100, this camera’s predecessor. Both of these Nikon ultrazooms were relatively inaccurate, and lagged behind the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS as well as the extraordinary Panasonic Lumix FZ47.

Nikon Coolpix P500 Review

The new Nikon Coolpix P500 has an incredible 36x optical zoom packed into a DSLR-like body. Get ready to hold your breath and capture subjects you didn’t even know were there! We’ve always had a soft spot for megazoom cameras. They offer amazing focal ranges and are perfect for anyone who wants the long telephoto reach of a DSLR without spending a fortune on interchangeable lenses or dealing with the bulk. When we used a 14-megapixel Canon PowerShot SX30 IS with a 35x zoom, it literally rocked our world — photographically speaking, of course. The 24-840mm range was startling as we could zoom in on things that were totally unrecognizable with normal eyesight. Now Nikon has expanded this range to 36x by going a bit wider to 22.5mm with a telephoto that’s “only” 810mm. Yeah, it’s ridiculous, but lots of fun as we’ll soon see.The Coolpix P500 has a definite DSLR vibe, but since there’s no mirror-box assembly, larger APS-C sensor or lens mount, the camera is noticeably less bulky and lighter (we placed a Canon T3 with lens attached next to it for comparison). Available in black or burgundy, the P500 measures 4.6 x 3.3 x 4.1 (W x H x D, in inches) and weighs 17.5 ounces fully loaded with battery and card.

Nikon Coolpix P500

With its 36X optical zoom, the Nikon Coolpix P500 ($400 as of June 9, 2011) is the current ruler of the megazoom world. At 35X, only the Canon PowerShot SX30 is in close pursuit, but the SX30’s 24mm wide-angle specification is no match for the P500’s superwide 22.5mm lens--a feat that has yet to be equaled by any other non-interchangeable-lens camera. The P500 is no slouch at full zoom either, reaching a highly impressive, image-stabilized 810mm. The 12-megapixel P500’s attributes go beyond its powerful superzoom lens, as it offers full automatic, semimanual, and manual-exposure modes. In addition, the camera has a nice balance of no-brainer options such as auto scene selection, as well as adjustable parameters that include post-shooting image optimization and Active D-Lighting for increasing dynamic range. The camera’s multiple video options include 1080p high-definition video as well as high-speed movie capture for slow-motion (or fast-motion) playback. Nikon has supported interval shooting for time-lapse effects in many of its cameras for quite a while, and the P500 is no exception. One thing that is missing is a RAW-shooting mode. Given the Coolpix P500’s other strengths, however, that’s a relatively minor consideration.

Digital Cameras: SLR, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

The zoom factor seems to be something of a magic number when it comes to selling bridge cameras these days. Nikon is therefore clearly aiming high, equipping its Coolpix P500 with a zoom of no less than 36x. With a wide-angle focal length announced at 22.5 mm, that pushes the telephoto setting all the way up to 810 mm! Comparing the P500 with its predecessor, the P100, is like a game of spot the difference—the two models are so similar it's hard to tell them apart. Without looking at the tech specs, the rear face of the two models appears to be identical, a 'burst' button is the only new addition to the top, and the rubber detail on the grip handle and the number of lens elements are the only differences to the front of the camera. The most reliable way of telling them apart is the new model's zoom control on the left-hand side of the lens casing. This continuity in design is no bad thing, since the P100 was a nice camera to handle and use. The slight improvement to the grip handle is a welcome change and experienced Nikon bridge users will find their way around in no time. From the back, the P500 may look identical to the P100, but there is one very important difference: the screen.

Nikon Coolpix P500

Perhaps the ultimate all-in-one digital camera, the Nikon P500 is like having a digital SLR and a very large bag of lenses and adapters, all compressed into one small, light package. While long zooms used to be limited at the wide-angle end, the Nikon P500 sports an ultra-wide-angle lens, starting at 22.5mm! That means less stepping back to get it all in; in fact, many users will do well to zoom in a bit for most photographs. That's made easier thanks to the inclusion of an additional zoom control on the side of the lens, which helps you remain a little more steady as you zoom all the way in to 810mm equivalent. That's such a long zoom that though Vibration Reduction helps, it's hard to keep on target without a steady hand. A 12.1-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor is optimized for good performance in low light, and the Nikon P500's EXPEED C2 dual image processor lends a hand to make the Nikon P500 a zippy performer in more ways than one. The speedy processor also enables a few special modes, including Easy Panorama and Backlighting/HDR modes. A continuous mode can capture up to five frames at eight frames per second, as well, making the Nikon P500 a great choice for casual sports shooting.

Nikon Coolpix P500

If you want to capture the action close up, the 12.1-megapixel Nikon Coolpix P500 ($399.95 direct), with its 36x zoom lens, will get you right there. But with this digital camera, you get more than just an insanely long lens. Good image quality, speed, and a well-rounded feature set, are part of the deal. Just keep in mind: The P500 is big, since it houses a big lens, but you don't get a large sensor, like you would with a compact interchangeable lens camera or a Digital SLR. Though the P500 features a huge 36x zoom, a large, articulating 3-inch LCD and a solid, SLR-like grip, it weighs in at a surprisingly light-feeling 1.1 pounds. At 2.3 by 4.06 by 1.26 inches (HWD), though, it's not small. All that space is to hold the camera's massive zoom lens. The grip on the right side provides a firm hold while framing your shot, and well-placed buttons and switches offer plenty of control; the camera feels good in your hand. You get dedicated buttons for continuous shooting and video recording, and a scroll wheel for aperture/shutter/manual-shooting settings. The lens has a massive focal length span of 22.5 to 810mm (35mm equivalent), giving it both remarkable reach and a very wide angle.

Nikon Coolpix P500 (black)

The Nikon Coolpix P500, the manufacturer's latest full-size megazoom, is packing a 36x f3.4-5.7 21.5-800mm lens (35mm equivalent). That blows away its predecessor, the P100, which had a 26x, f2.8-5 26-678mm lens and narrowly beats Canon's PowerShot SX30 IS and its 35x, f2.7-5.8, 24-840mm (35mm equivalent). At least in magnification, since the Nikon starts wider; it doesn't surpass the Canon, though really when it comes to specsmanship the "36x" is all that matters. The camera is more than just its lens, however. It has a gorgeous 3-inch vari-angle LCD and an electronic viewfinder; excellent image stabilization to back up that lens (though keeping your subject in your shot is a whole other issue); shooting options that take advantage of its high-speed CMOS sensor; and it's got a comfortable, easy-to-figure-out control layout and menu system. It's also got great shooting performance including almost no shutter lag and short shot-to-shot times. On the short list of notably absent features is raw support and automatic picture orientation, something that can be found on cameras at a fraction of the P500's cost and abilities.
