Nikon Coolpix P310 Review

The Nikon Coolpix P310 is a new pocket compact camera designed to appeal to the keen enthusiast photographer. The Nikon P310 has a 4.2x optical zoom with a focal range of 24-100mm, maximum apertures of f/1.8-4.9 and lens-shift Vibration Reduction. The P310 boasts a sensitivity range of ISO 160 to 6400, creative PASM shooting modes, full 1080p HD video recording with stereo sound and slow and fast motion movies, a burst mode of 5 continuous shots at 6 frames per second, 99-point autofocus system and a 3-inch 920,000-dot LCD screen. The Nikon Coolpix P310 is available in black or white for £299.99 / $329.95 / €354.00. The Nikon Coolpix P310 is virtually identical to its predecessor, the P300, in terms of its external design and looks, with the main change being the addition of a Function button to the front of the camera. You can easily carry the P310 around in a trouser or shirt pocket, as it measures 103.0 x 58.3 x 32.0 mm and weighs less than 200g with the battery and memory card fitted.

Nikon Coolpix P310

The Nikon Coolpix P310 is without peer at its price ($300 as of August 15, 2012). It's a premium compact camera priced more like your average point-and-shoot, with a fast F1.8 lens, manual exposure controls, very good image quality, and a pocket-size body. The Coolpix P310 offers the best bang for the buck you'll find in the premium-compact class, just as long as you don't need a long-zoom lens or a RAW mode. Performance, Image Quality, and Video Quality In PCWorld Labs jury evaluations for image quality, the Nikon Coolpix P310 largely lived up to its "premium compact" branding. It may not have the best overall image quality in the premium point-and-shoot realm, but it is among the best cameras we've tested this year. The P310 earned scores of Very Good in three of the four testing categories (exposure quality, sharpness, and lack of distortion), and a Good score for color accuracy. Unlike most other cameras these days, the Coolpix P310 takes an understated approach to color reproduction; you don't see the punchy, oversaturated colors that you do in other cameras' pictures.

Nikon Coolpix P310

The Nikon Coolpix P310 ($329.95 direct) may be billed as a point-and-shoot camera, but it's clearly designed with serious photographers in mind. A wide aperture lens and a thoughtful physical control layout let you take full command of the camera's settings, and image quality is excellent for its class. More casual snapshooters may be turned off by the 16-megapixel camera's size—it's a little large for its class—and limited zoom range. For that reason the smaller, longer zooming Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX150 ($249.99, 4.5 stars) wins our Editors' Choice winner for compact point-and-shoot cameras, but photographic enthusiasts will want to give the P310 serious consideration when shopping for a pocket camera. The P310 measures 2.3 by 4.1 by 1.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.9 ounces. Its body isn't quite as deep as you'd think from those figures—the lens extends out a quarter inch or so, even when retracted. When you compare it to a traditionally designed compact camera like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ7 ($199.99, 3 stars) it's noticeably bigger. The SZ7 measures just 2.4 by 3.9 by 0.9 inches and is lighter at 4.8 ounces.

Nikon Coolpix P310 (Preview)

Last year, Nikon marketed the Coolpix P300 as a compact, wide-aperture companion for the serious shooter. It was positioned as an alternative to the very popular Canon S95, but for some reason the model never really took off. Fast forward a bit and we see the release of Canon's awesome S100, and now today, our first impression of the new P310. A subtle update, to match Canon's subtle update. The wide f/1.8 aperture makes a return, and this time the model boasts a 16.1 megapixel CMOS sensor. Other than that, the P310 seems pretty much unchanged since its predecessor. The P310’s appearance is essentially a carbon copy of the P300, with the solitary addition of a new Fn button on the front panel. It’s a spartan, modern aesthetic that will appeal to some and bore others. This model has only been announced in black, however we spotted a white model on the show floor. The user experience is quite similar to P300’s, which means it’s aimed at a more experienced user who’s comfortable enough to take advantage of the Tv, Av, and manual shooting modes. The control dial on top of the body makes menu navigation very easy, though the multitude of available options will delay first-time users. The rear directional pad doubles as a rotating dial, just like the P300, adding some flexibility to the control scheme.
