Nikon V1

The Nikon V1 ($899.95 direct with 10-30mm lens) is an odd bird. Positioned as a more-robust version of the entry-level J1 ($649.95, 3.5 stars), the V1 is, on the exterior, basically the same camera with the addition of an electronic viewfinder and an accessory port, and the subtraction of the pop-up flash. The 10-megapixel V1 is priced like a higher-end mirrorless camera—its costs the same as the Olympus PEN E-P3 ($899.99, 4 stars)—but doesn't offer the level of physical control that more demanding photographers are after. If you're a fan of the 1 system and are set on a camera with an EVF, the V1 is your only option—but there are better compact interchangeable lens cameras out there for less money, including our Editors' Choice Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars). Design and Features The 10.4-ounce V1 is slightly larger than the J1, measuring 3 by 4.4 by 1.7 inches (vs. 2.4 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches; 8.3 ounces). Whereas the J1 is available in four colors, the V1 comes only in black, and ships with a matching 10-30mm (27-81mm equivalent) zoom lens. The lens itself is collapsible, and extending it for use is one way to turn the camera on—the other being the On/Off button.

Nikon 1 V1 Review

With Olympus, Sony and Panasonic gunning to dominate the nascent mirrorless camera segment, many wondered whether the big wigs (A.K.A Canon and Nikon) would ever venture into the new territory. While Canon has remained mum on the topic, Nikon has come forth and announced the availability of two mirrorless cameras, the Nikon V1 and J1 as part of the Nikon 1 system. According to Nikon, their mirrorless cameras are infused with some never-before-seen tech like the hybrid focus system that utilizes both contrast and phase detection to acquire and lock focus, doing so at blazing fast speeds. Nikon has also blessed their mirrorless cameras with the ability to shoot stills at 60 frames per second, a feature that NO CAMERA, point and shoot or DSLR, currently has. There is a lot of excitement around the Nikon 1 system, especially the V1, which Nikon claims as the superior of the two. We get our eager hands on the big boy and put Nikon's claims to the test. The Nikon V1 employs magnesium-alloy as the choice of contraction material, lending it a very solid feel. The camera feels sturdy to hold, yet doesn't feel overtly heavy. The base of the camera is made of high-grade plastic that does not feel flimsy in the slightest.

We are all like Goldilocks, forever sampling the too-much, too-little, just-right of things. In the camera world, it's easy to imagine that's the dSLR, the digicam, and the Compact System Camera. But even among CSCs, there's the same problem. The Sony NEX with its large sensor could be called too much [Ed: Opinions on this point differ at ]. The Pentax Q with its small sensor is too little. And those Micro Four Thirds cameras are all just right. When Nikon sat down to design a mirrorless camera with more image quality than the Coolpix series could provide and less luggage space than its dSLRs require, there was no NEX, Pentax nor Micro Four Thirds. Instead, Nikon partnered with Aptina as it conceived the Nikon V1, a San Jose, Calif. company, to design a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor in its new CX format. Aptina traces its development back over 10 years, "beginning when NASA's Dr. Eric Fossum researched what advantages CMOS image sensors had. And they did have advantages, including less power requirements, more portability, and miniaturized imaging systems." Fossum co-founded Photobit Corp. to commercialize CMOS sensors for scientific, military, and industrial applications.

Nikon 1 V1 Review

This is the big brother to the cute but over-priced Nikon 1 J1 (link). It costs hundreds more, but how does it compare to the J1 and Sony NEX-7? We tested the 10-megapixel Nikon J1 awhile back and felt the company’s first Compact System (mirrorless) Camera was overpriced, especially compared to the 12MP Olympus E-PM1, which you can get for around $450 with a 14-42mm lens and flash. The J1 has since come down from its initial levels, but even at $600, it’s not worth it. Now, we finally received the dressed-in-black V1, which is geared to advanced photographers rather than the point-and-shoot J1 crowd. That’s not to say the two cameras are radically different — their engines and basic feature set are the same — but the V1 has some spice that makes it more appealing such as a high-quality electronic viewfinder, a much better LCD screen, and a hot shoe for optional accessories such as the SB-N5 flash or a GPS unit. Actually the flash really isn’t optional since, if you don’t get it, forget flash photography. Where the J1 has a small built-in flash, the V1 just has the hot shoe. So let’s add $150 to the price — now we’re nearly at a grand. Nikon was kind enough to send the new VR 10-100mm power zoom to test, and that’s a cool $750.

Nikon 1 V1 / J1 Review

Nikon's entry into the mirrorless interchangeable lens market late last year was widely anticipated, but the products that were finally announced took a lot of people by surprise. Nikon has created an entirely new system based around a relatively small sensor, that's about 30% of the size of those used in the company's DX-format SLRs. The system is spearheaded by two cameras - the Nikon 1 J1 and 1 V1. The J1 is the entry-level model, and the V1 is aimed at a slightly more advanced user, but both cameras are intended essentially for beginners upgrading from compact cameras or cameraphones, and who find the size and complexity of a DSLR intimidating. The V1 and J1's standout features are their autofocus and continuous shooting abilities. Both cameras feature a 'hybrid' AF system that combines both Phase and Contrast Detection methods, which in principle allows them to keep track of fast-moving subjects in much the same way as SLRs can (and compacts and other mirrorless cameras conspicuously can't). Both also feature a remarkable maximum shooting speed of 60 frames per second at full resolution, and to support this they use dual image processors that offer Nikon's latest 'EXPEED 3' processing.

Nikon V1 review

The Nikon V1 is a compact interchangeable lens camera (ILC) with 10.1 Megapixels, Full HD video, a selection of innovative shooting modes, quick burst modes and what Nikon describes as the world's fastest AF system to date. The V1, along with the simpler J1, are the first two models in Nikon's new '1' series, announced in September 2011. Unlike existing APS-C and Micro Four Thirds models though, the Nikon 1 system is based around a new 'CX-format' CMOS sensor. Measuring 13.2x8.8mm with a 2.7x field-reduction factor, the CX format is smaller than APS-C and Micro Four Thirds sensors, but comfortably larger than those in point-and-shoot cameras or the Pentax Q system. The 10.1 Megapixel CX-sensor in the V1 and J1 also boasts a hybrid AF system, automatically switching between contrast-based and phase-detection technologies. These allow it to quickly and continuously autofocus for both stills and Full HD video, with Nikon even claiming it's the World's fastest. In addition both models boast supremely quick continuous shooting, at 10fps with autofocus, or a massive 60fps with the focus locked at the first frame.

Nikon 1 V1 review

Launched in concert with the J1, the V1 is the second of Nikon's newly-announced interchangeable lens compact cameras. With a 10.1-megapixel sensor, it's aimed squarely at those who are wowed less by resolution than by what really matters: image quality. Like its sibling, the V1 puts out some of the sharpest, most detailed, most colourful pictures we have seen in some time. The V1 is built like the proverbial tank. The camera's heavy, tipping the scales at 383g -- that's without any lens attached -- and made mostly from metal. It has a wonderful retro look to it, with a chunky viewfinder protruding from the back, just above the LCD. Beside that is a slide-off cover, which hides a hotshoe for mounting an optional flash or GPS unit. Buttons and dials are kept to a minimum, with a four-way mode selector mounted on the back covering off still image, 'smart photo selector', movie and motion snapshot modes. Still image speaks for itself, but smart photo selector is worth exploring further. Select it and half-press the shutter to fix the focus; the V1 immediately starts capturing data. When you fully depress the shutter release it stops, then it compares 20 stored images to pick the best shot in terms of composition and exposure.

Nikon V1 review

Like the Nikon 1 J1, launched at the same time, the Nikon 1 V1 is a compact system camera (CSC). This means that it lacks the reflex mirror and optical viewfinder found in DSLR cameras, but it can accept interchangeable lenses. Not surprisingly, the Nikon V1 has much in common with the J1, not least the 10.1 million effective pixel sensor, EXPEED 3 processor and the new Nikon 1 lens mount. While Panasonic, Olympus, Samsung and Sony have opted for Four Thirds and APS-C sized sensors in their CSCs, Nikon has taken a leaf out of Pentax's book and used a smaller device. In Nikon's case this is a CX format sensor that measures 13.2 x 8.8mm.Restricting the V1's effective pixel count to 10.1MP means that the sensor isn't excessively over populated, but nevertheless the smaller sensor size means that the Nikon J1 and V1 engineers had their work cut out to keep image noise down. Smaller sensors usually mean smaller photoreceptors (pixels) and smaller receptors gather less light so they create a weaker image signal, which requires greater amplicfication and the end result is usually a noisier photograph. The most obvious difference between the Nikon V1 and the J1 is that the V1 has an electronic viewfinder (EVF), which adds a lump to the top-plate.

Nikon V1

The Nikon V1 is the second of two mirrorless cameras debuted by Nikon this year. With an image sensor and lens mount developed entirely in-house and their first new lens system since 1959, Nikon has a lot riding on their new system. With the mirrorless camera segment exploding this year, Nikon may have picked the perfect time to enter the fray. The V1 is in many ways the senior of the two Nikon mirrorless cameras, offering a built-in LCD viewfinder, a mechanical shutter, vastly superior handling, and other features designed for the mirrorless market. Having already reviewed the J1 this fall, we got ahold of the V1 at Photo Plus East in New York, to see if Nikon's top of the line mirrorless model improves on its flashier cousin. Where the Nikon J1 sports a flashier, smooth appearance, with a design that shouts “look at me!” the understated V1 seems to respond, “just look natural.” The V1’s surface is a soft, rubberized material that is exceptionally easy to grip and control. Every inch of the V1 seems geared toward aiding the goal of taking better pictures, with nothing spared for fashion’s sake. The V1 offers an identical control scheme to the J1, with a four-way rear control pad, “function” button, mode dial, zoom toggle, display, menu, playback, and delete keys taking up the rear of the camera.

Nikon V1 and J1

Nikon's 1 system represents the company's arrival in the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera market. Like its rivals, the company says it is targeting the compact camera user who wants better quality but is put off by the size and complexity of a DSLR. We spoke to the company when the system was first launched and wrote about our first impressions. According to Nikon, the 1 system has been four years in the making. Tracking back, this means that Nikon started work on its new mirrorless system in mid-2007 - about a year before Panasonic launched the pioneering Micro Four-Thirds system with the Lumix DMC-G1. The result of all this work is two cameras, based around a completely new lens mount and a unique 'CX format' sensor. At 13.2 x 8.8mm, the 10MP sensor inside these new cameras (common to both models) is small by comparison with most of their mirrorless peers, and results in a 2.7x effective focal length multiplier (which sees a 10mm lens becoming an 'effective' 27mm). Now that the dust has had time to settle, it is fair to say that this decision surprised a lot of people, and disappointed many.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Nikon has launched its own 'Nikon 1' interchangeable lens compact camera system, using a mid-sized sensor that's smaller than those typically used in micro four-thirds and APS cameras, but bigger than the small-format sensors used in regular compacts. The cameras have also been loaded with a few interesting new shooting modes, like Motion Snapshot and Smart Photo Selector, which apparently make for a 'brand new photographic experience'. The first Nikon 1 camera we've managed to get hold of is the V1, a high-end model complete with electronic viewfinder and flash hot-shoe. The Nikon V1 is something of a contradictory camera. Although it's bigger and heavier than a regular compact, it doesn't have a grip handle—just a raised vertical bar on the front of the camera that you can barely rest a couple of fingers on. As a result, although the camera is well made and certainly feels sturdy to handle, grip could still be improved. Nikon has clearly tried to do something radically different with the V1—after all, the firm wouldn't want to encroach too much into the territory of its D3100 entry-level SLR.
