The Nikon 1 J2 is a stylish compact system camera featuring a 10-megapixel “CX” format sensor and the Nikon 1 lens mount. Boasting continuous shooting speeds of up to 60 frames per second at full resolution, Full HD video capture, an ultra-fast hybrid auto-focus system, Smart Photo Selector and a unique Motion Snapshot Mode, the portable Nikon J2 also offers more conventional shooting modes like Programmed Auto, Aperture and Shutter Priority, as well as Metered Manual and a new Creative Mode that provides a variety of photo effects and easier access to the camera's key settings. Also on board is a built-in pop-up flash with a guide number of 5, a 3 inch rear display with an increased resolution of 921k-dots, and an electronic shutter. The Nikon 1 J2 is available in white, black, silver, pink, red and orange and is priced at $549.95 / £499.99 with a 10-30mm zoom lens, or $799.95 / £649.99 in a double-lens kit with the 10-30mm and 30-110mm zoom lenses.

Buying GuideBest compact system camera 2012Nikon was one of the last manufacturers to enter the compact system camera (CSC) market, launching the Nikon 1 system in September 2011. Unlike other systems, Nikon uses a smaller, 1-inch CX format sensor in the Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 J2, which enables a smaller overall body size. Although it perhaps wasn't the system many were expecting from the company, it - or rather the Nikon 1 J1 - has performed exceptionally well, topping the CSC sales charts at several points in its 12 month history. In the intervening time since the Nikon 1's launch, we've finally seen what biggest rival Canon has to offer, in the shape of the Canon EOS M. Unlike Nikon, Canon has chosen to use a large APS-C sensor, the same device found in the Canon 650D, one of its entry-level DSLRs. Perhaps Nikon is keen to avoid cannibalising its already successful lineup of beginner and enthusiast-level DSLRs, but the Nikon 1 system is so far straying pretty far away from the full manual control, advanced bodies we're currently seeing from the likes of Panasonic, Fujifilm and Olympus. Less than a year after the launch, Nikon has already refreshed the J1 with the J2.
Nikon 1 J2 review
With a retro body, shrunken lenses and understated, knocked-back menus, the Nikon 1 J1 was one of last year's classiest cameras. Perhaps that's why the J2 looks almost unchanged. Stand it beside the J1 and aside from the new body colours and the model number stamped in one corner, you'd be hard-pressed to tell them apart. The Nikon 1 J2 is available to buy for around £500. But is it the same draw as its much-liked predecessor? The appearance isn't the only thing to have stuck since last season -- the resolution hasn't budged either, with the 13.2mm by 8.8mm CMOS sensor still home to just 10.1 megapixels. The J2 is one of the most attractive cameras you can buy, with a retro body and a series of compact lenses. Resolution isn't the complete story when it comes to judging the worth of a camera -- 10.1 megapixels is still enough to print large A3-sized images, and beyond. But with more pixels comes greater flexibility, and that's what you'll miss with the J2. There's only so much you can do with a zoom lens -- at times you'll want to crop to a detail in post-production to recompose your shot. Compare the J2 with Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-RX100.
Nikon 1 J2 (Preview)
A year after its interchangeable-lens-camera debut, nothing much has changed in Nikonville. While its entry-level Nikon 1 J1 is a decent, pretty little camera, the company's follow-up model, the J2, doesn't really address many of the issues of its predecessor, though Nikon's wisely bringing it out at a lower price (and anticipates lowering the price of the J1). Basically, the J2 adds a higher-resolution LCD and photo effects and scene modes that were oddly missing from the J1 (Panorama, Selective Color, Miniature, Soft, Night Landscape, Backlighting, and Night Portraits). You'll also be able to turn the camera when you expand the lens -- the CX lenses retract similarly to Olympus' 14-42mm kit lens -- a nice but small improvement. Unfortunately, Nikon chose to add a grip only to the red and pink models rather than the vastly more popular white. There's no mention of improved battery life, support for shutter speeds faster than 1/60 sec with the flash, or better noise reduction in the JPEGs, my major complaints with the J1.
