That was the first thing that came to mind when we unpacked these in-ear headphones. With a tubular body made up of a single, sleek piece of metal, we were left wondering if we hand't accidentally received the fuselage of a model aeroplane instead of some headphones. All of that metal can be off-putting at first, especially when you feel the weight of the headphones in your hands. You soon forget about that once they're in your ears, though, as the cables are very light by comparison. The cables, which have a duraflex coating, are said to be able to resist being being tangled or twisted, and our best efforts didn't seem to do them any damage. To ensure you get a comfortable fit, several pairs of ear tips are provided, including some with a triple flange (see inset). The latter might not be to everybody's taste, but they do produce excellent isolation. Be careful not to shove the spare tips into the carry case though, as they easily fall out. Although that title might sound strange, it's actually testament to the nice surprise the Turbines had in store for us. Unlike the Heartbeats or Tour models in the Beats by Dr Dre collection, they don't bury you in a ton of bass. The bass is still there, of course, and goes very low.
In recent years, Monster Cables started to expand its business to include a handful of headphones, the first models coming from a collaboration with hip-hop producer Dr. Dre. The company's offerings now comprise a couple of in-ear sets, including the top-of-the-line Turbine Pro In-Ear Speakers, a $299 number that features the same heavy-metal earpieces as found on the first Turbine earphones. While we wish Monster had incorporated an integrated mic and iPod controls at this price point, it's hard to overlook the Turbine Pro's high-end look and feel and top-notch sound. The Turbine Pro--and its lower-priced sibling, for that matter--are some of the nicest earphones we've come across in terms of style and design. The earpieces are constructed entirely of shiny metal, with indented outer edges and slanted notches that give them a distinct airplane engine look (in other words, they live up to the "turbine" label). A possible downside is that this construction makes the 'buds pretty heavy, so they may have a tendency to slip out of some users' ears. However, we had no problems achieving a secure fit with the foam tips Monster includes in the package.
That’s right, Monster Cable, the company well known for its rather expensive audio cables and peripherals has taken the opportunity to delve into the headphone market. The difference with their entry, they are doing it big time. In January of this year the TechwareLabs staff was on hand at the Monster press conference when they announced the Turbines and their partnership with Ludacris to help promote the entry. We later interviewed the head monster and Ludacris to get their thoughts. Now the Turbines are entering a market flooded with products of all ranges, but a closer look at the suggested retail price of $149 to $179 says these headphones are squarely aimed at the medium to high end market. But they are just earplugs you might might be thinking, and at $149 you could well buy a high end product from Bose or Shure. What makes the Turbines different, the answer, a whole new level of listening pleasure. And all you get is a lot of sound but not necessarily better quality. Since sound quality is such a subjective aspect I will attempt to explain the difference the Turbines make.
