Reviews: Video Projectors

Mitsubishi's HC7800D is a 3D projector with integrated motion interpolation. Just like Acer with its HD9500BD, Mitsubishi opted for DLP technology rather than LCD. But will that be enough to earn it our top grade? Unlike other projectors we've been testing recently, the manufacturing quality with this one was rather disappointing. Certain pieces, like the chrome ring surrounding the lens, were poorly assembled. The ring looked like it was going to come right off every time we'd focus the lens. It was already off to a bad start. Not everybody in our lab was happy with the colour, either—Mitsubishi chose pearly black with a sort of bluish tint. But in any case, that's more a question of taste and won't count in our rating. And just in case you were thinking of changing the colour yourself, be aware that there's a logo on the body clearly stating that you are not advised to apply paint to the casing. As for the optics, the HC7800D is equipped with a powerful 1.5:1 zoom. The lens shift, however, is a bit limited. With a base image of 2 metres, we were only able to move the picture 40 cm vertically. The lens doesn't allow you to move the image horizontally. The remote control is similar to the one that comes with the HC4000. We liked the fact that it's backlit and has lots of shortcuts (with the 3D button on the top right).
