The recent Xbox 360 dashboard update is causing color and resolution issues for video playback. Microsoft says it's looking into it. According to reports the 360is setting incorrect black levels for all video playback. The result is washed out colors and greyish black levels. "We’re aware of the colorspace issue with some Xbox video apps & are working on a fix," said Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb on Twitter. "No ETA yet but we hope to have an update soon." Additionally, a report on Eurogamer notes that the dashboard update has made all non-Zune video content limited to just 720p output. Microsoft has no commented on the resolution issue just yet. OverviewThe Xbox 360 has changed since its launch in 2005.That much is transparently clear from the updated version that debuted in 2010.The Xbox 360 S is smaller, sleeker and quieter than the previous model and designed to banish the infamous 'Red Ring of Death' hardware failure that forced Microsoft to extend its warranty on the system.Likewise the arrival of Kinect, which has gone on to sell over 10 million units, has transformed the machine from solely the preserve of hardcore gamers to a casual gamer friendly environment. While some of the novelty of Kinect may have worn off, if anything the games are improving – finding new ways to take advantage of what is still fascinating technology. But Microsoft is and always has been a software company first and foremost and, fittingly, that's ...

Overview, design and feelThe HTC Radar is the latest smartphone to run Windows Phone 7.5, following on from the HTC Titan. With a smooth unibody design, HD video recording and 5MP camera, will it be enough to make Windows Phone a success? If HTC was at school right now, you can't help feeling it'd be getting an A for effort. The Taiwanese manufacturer is certainly churning out handsets like nobody's business. For the last few years, it's been concentrating mainly on Android - but now Windows Phone 7.5 Mango is here, it's going for gold. Probably much to the annoyance of Nokia, which adopted WP as its main operating system months ago, but is still being pipped to the post by HTC when it comes to getting handsets on the shelves.Little brother of the HTC Titan and the second handset from HTC t...

We do our best to report the truth here at Maximum PC, but sometimes companies just don’t make it easy. First Microsoft tells us the Zune is dead, then alive, then dead. Then HP tells us HP us WebOS is dead, then alive, but just between us, we still think its dead. We fully admit that on Friday we wrote a piece informing everyone that WebOS development at HP was not long for this world, along with dozens of other mainstream news outlets, however HP’s Vice President Todd Bradley has gone on the record to label this an “unfounded rumor”. According to Bradley, WebOS is not only alive and well, but they are looking for new ways to “utilize” the platform going forward. If HP has no plans to release phones or tablets, we have to question what if any use they will find for webOS in th...

Hands on: Nokia Lumia 710 review: HardwareThe baby of the Nokia Windows Phone range, the Nokia Lumia 710 promises a cheap and cheerful handset with a top end experience. It's got looks that seem aimed at a younger demographic – so can Nokia tear the teenage masses away from BBM and iPhone lust and over to the Windows Phone way?The handset certainly doesn't feel bad in the hand – it's made from a smooth plastic which looks good in the white matt finish, although it's also available in a shinier black finish that seemed to attract fingerprints and smears like nobody's business. It's not overly heavy and although it won't win any accolades for being the slimmest handset on the market, the Nokia Lumia 710 is easily small enough to sit anonymously in a pocket or small bag. Overview, design and feelHTC is doing fairly well right now. From the days of making (not so great) Windows Mobile handsets for networks, it's found its identity and is now riding high with a hugely recognisable brand around the world. Android was its saviour (and still is) but Windows hasn't been forgotten. HTC was the first to roll out Windows Phone 7 devices when they launched in the UK last year. And, true to form, it's in the lead with Windows Phone 7.5 devices too. The HTC Titan is one of its two first Mango-powered handsets - the other being the Radar. So, what's in a name? Well, quite a lot actually. The Titans were giant beasts from ancient Greek mythology. So by giving the phone a name like this, HTC's certainly aiming high. And you see that as soon as you take the HTC Titan out ...

Microsoft's LifeCam Studio looks like a CCTV camera from a dystopian nightmare – forget the eye of Sauron, this feels like the eye of Microsoft, and it's pretty terrifying. Perched on top of our monitor, we were frightened to use our iPads and iPhones while in its gaze, lest a warning light went off in Steve Ballmer's office and Microsoft employees swept into our office to force Zunes into our trembling hands. Of course, looks aren't everything, and underneath the LifeCam Studio's rather austere surface is a very decent camera. With a maximum resolution of 1080p, the detail and quality of the video it produces is exemplary. The Truecolor technology included with the device makes subtle changes to lighting and colour that help improve the overall quality of your footage, and can be tweake...

With Windows Phone 7, Microsoft went from being a non-entity in the world of modern smartphones to becoming an important player. The old Windows Mobile operating systems had their fans, but they weren't as consumer-friendly as the iPhone and Android devices.WP7 changed all that, bringing integration with Facebook, a clear, touch-friendly user interface, slick multimedia functionality and Xbox Live games and connectivity.Of course, Microsoft didn't forget its roots, either. The Windows 8 picture is becoming clearer. Following on from the slides allegedly leaked in June 2010 by a software engineer at HP, Microsoft has now outed more details about the interface design. Microsoft says Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows, "from the chip to the interface". It says that "a Windows 8-based PC is really a new kind of device, one that scales from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse." Indeed, the new OS appears to have two completely separate interfaces - one, a traditional (and, on the surface of it, unchanged) Windows desktop and the other a new touch-based interface that borrows heavily from Windows Phone.Actually, as you'll see, it basically is Windows Phone. You can move seamlessly between the interfaces and ev...

HP, in the TouchSmart 610, has created their most compelling all-in-one desktop PC to date. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Phone 7 handsets unofficially upgraded to NoDo (aka update 7390) using the ChevronWP7 tool will not be able to upgrade to the new 7392 version being pushed out now, at least by official means. According to the Windows Team Blog, the unofficial modifications leave the Windows Phone handsets looking to the Zune PC software as incompletely upgraded: because of that you get error code 80180048 and can’t go any further. Build 7392 isn’t expected to bring any especially interesting changes, but the issue could lead to headaches down the road when Microsoft releases more significant updates like Mango to the platform. More worrying, Microsoft’s Brandon Watson says that, since the development team is focussing on getting Mango out on time,...

The evidence that Apple has something to do with a massive cloud-based push keeps mounting to the point that it’s nearly impossible to not think that something big is coming from Cupertino. Another bit of evidence that the Apple cloud streaming video application is coming has surfaced with a new hire by Apple. Apple has hired Kevin Timmons away from Microsoft. Instead of making Zune hardware for direct sale to consumers, Redmond will focus their efforts on the Zune software experience in Windows Phone 7. The company believes they have a stronger position in digital entertainment on the phone side, but they face stiff competition. Years of poor sales seem to have finally driven the point home. In a world dominated by Apple's portable media players, Microsoft would always be playing catch up. Consumers have usually been fond of the Zune software aesthetic, and that's something that informed much of the Windows Phone 7 UI. Zune lovers need not fret right this second, though.
