Logitech Mini Boombox

For portable speakers, it is usually a case of not expecting too much. The form factor caters to the ability to move it around with ease, but the biggest compromise, inevitably, is the sound quality. In the case of the Logitech Mini Boombox, things are surprisingly rosy. The moment you unpack the Logitech Mini Boombox, the sheer smallness of the size and the compact form factor takes some time to get used to – you always assumed that it would be bigger than this, and it actually turns into a surprise at the end of it all. The build quality of the Logitech Mini Boombox is something that could have been improved a bit, for sure. The entire thing is made completely of plastic, with the idea being to keep the weight down. However, the plastic is fine for the most part, but things become bad on the top panel. This is essentially where the controls are – we will get to that in a bit. The glossy nature of this section is very clearly evident by the number of scratches you can see on the surface. No matter how much care you take, this will inevitably happen. The speaker, front on The front grille of the Logitech Mini Boombox is black in colour, and the rest of the body is in white, thankfully in matte. There are multiple colour options, including an all black one. Agreeable build quality throughout, and seems well put together. However, do not expect it to look or feel premium. Due to the compact size of the Mini Boombox, the drivers are very close to each other, which will inevitably muffle out the stereo sound, effectively reducing it to what will sound like mono.

Logitech Mini Boombox review

The gap between smartphones and MP3 players began to narrow with the advent of the iPhone, and it is now practically non-existent thanks to smartphone storage capacities of often 8 or 16GB holding a lot of our music. There is nothing on this world or any other that's more annoying than listening to tinny music through the small speakers on a smartphone (especially if the music isn't yours). The Logitech Mini Boombox utilises the smartphone's Bluetooth connection to become a rechargeable wireless speaker. The Logitech Mini Boombox charges via a USB cable and is small, with a simple - yet quite good looking - design. When turned on six red icons appear on the top of the device, highlighting where to push to start, pause and skip between tracks, as well as changing the volume and connecting to a Bluetooth device. Connecting the Logitech Mini Boombox via Bluetooth was incredibly easy - we just turned on Bluetooth detection on the phone, then pressed and held the Bluetooth button on the Mini Boombox, then clicked 'Mini Boombox' on our smartphone and they connected straight away. A nice feature was that we could control playback on our smartphone from the Mini Boombox, making it a sort of remote control for our phone as well.

Logitech Mini Boombox review

When Logitech announced its new Mini Boombox back in November, our advice was to give the portable speaker a listen before handing over your money. The advice wasn't due to any personal vendetta against Logitech, rather, it had everything to do with company's claim that the tiny speaker could offer an "immersive sound experience" for just $99.99 — a quote attributed to Azmat Ali, Logitech vice president of tablets and mobile in the accompanying press release. That's a bold proclamation for a device measuring just 4.55 x 2.8 x 2.28 inches and weighing half a pound. Fortunately, we received a unit in-house for review allowing us to put it head-to-head with our favorite battery-powered portable speaker, the Jawbone Jambox. You can tell a lot about a piece of consumer electronics by the care used in its assembly. So, look at that Mini USB cut-out, just look at it — that was my first impression of the device. Wait, back up, my first impression began at the unboxing where the Mini Boombox was found ensconced in the kind of chintzy plastic that would make a fast-food-beverage top blush with supremacy.

Logitech Mini Boombox Review

Beneath the friendly, rounded frame of the Logitech Mini Boombox lie some seriously mean speakers. This small Bluetooth speaker delivers surprisingly good bass, but not at the expense of higher tones. It also has a built-in mic so you can take calls from anywhere, great for an impromptu conference call.Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the Logitech Mini Boombox has rounded edges that make it a lot more approachable than squared-off competitors such as the Spar Zephyr 300 and the Jawbone Jambox. Measuring 4.5 x 2.8 x 2.2 inches, the Mini Boombox is the same width as the Zephyr 300, but twice as thick. As a result, the 8.1-ounce speaker couldn't fit into our pocket, but we could easily slip it into a backpack or purse. The front of the Mini Boombox is dominated by a black oval speaker grille with the Logitech logo at the bottom. The top, which holds touch-sensitive controls (volume, play/pause, previous and next track, and Pair/Phone) is a shiny black plastic that picks up fingerprints easily. The rear of the speaker houses an On/Off switch, miniUSB port, and Aux-in jack.

Logitech Mini Boombox

For a long period of time, Bluetooth speakers, regardless of size or price, offered poor audio performance on par with low bitrate MP3s from the early days of file sharing. Logitech's Mini Boombox shows us how far not only Bluetooth, but portable audio, has come. At $99.99 (direct), this speaker is among the most compact, portable designs we've seen. The size alone sets you up for disappointment before hearing it, but the dual drivers of the Mini Boombox pack quite a punch. Obviously, a speaker this size is susceptible to distortion at high volumes, but the system still performs quite well, and pumps out more volume than you'd expect upon first glance. At half the price of the Aliph Jawbone Jambox ($199.99, 3.5 stars), it easily outperforms on the value front alone, earning it our Editors' Choice award for budget portable speakers. Design Measuring 2.3 by 2.8 by 4.6-inches, the black plastic Logitech Mini Bombox is unassuming to say the least. Its size makes it ideal for throwing in a carry-on bag, and at 8 ounces, it's not going to weigh things down much. It's surprising that the small front panel hides two speaker drivers for stereo audio behind its grille.

Logitech Mini Boombox

Jawbone has had some success in the market with the Jambox, a small Bluetooth speaker with speakerphone capabilities. Designed to augment the sound of smartphones and tablets such the iPad, the nice thing about the Jambox is that it plays loud and takes up little room in your bag so it makes for an excellent traveling companion. Logitech's Mini Boombox does exactly the same thing as the $175 Jambox, and while it doesn't do it quite as well--and isn't as slickly designed--it only costs half as much. The Mini Boombox is smaller than the Jambox and about the same size and weight (1 pound) as the Monster iClarityHD, which also sells for around $100. The Mini Boombox has touch-sensitive buttons on the top of speaker and an auxiliary input for plugging in audio devices that aren't Bluetooth-enabled (optional cable not included). The first word that comes to mind when you see this is "cute." Yes, this little guy has an understated but perky design that's sure to get some curious glances from onlookers. My only gripe is that the dark, glossy plastic finish on top of the unit seems prone to showing scratches and fingerprints, so you'll have to be careful to protect the speaker or else it may start to look a little beat up.
