Libratone Zipp review

Libratone's Zipp portable AirPlay speaker looks great. It comes with interchangeable woollen sleeves: a grey one, red one and blue one, or the 'funky' black, pink and yellow. Controls and inputs are cleverly hidden behind the leather carrying handle. As well as doing AirPlay in the usual way - streaming music wirelessly from devices on the same network - its PlayDirect feature lets you stream without a network using an ad-hoc connection. The Zipp also has a four-hour rechargeable battery. PlayDirect isn't perfect. It blocks your normal Wi-Fi connection to the internet, so you can't use streaming services such as Spotify or TuneIn Radio. With an iPhone or cellular-equipped iPad, you can monkey with your settings to allow a simultaneous cell data connection, but mind your data caps if you're streaming from the internet. Audio quality is generally good, with decently chunky bass, sufficient competency in the mid-range and clarity at the top end. But it won't blow you away, and for 370 we damn well want to be blown away. Naturally there's zero stereo separation, but we can live with that.

Libratone Zipp review: Portable AirPlay speaker has trade-offs

One of the problems with Apple's AirPlay wireless-streaming technology is that it's not as easy as it should be for the average consumer to set up initially. But Libratone, a Danish company that's now expanding to the U.S., has resolved this problem with its new, strikingly designed high-end portable AirPlay speaker, the Zipp. What's the trick? Well, instead of having to connect to your Wi-Fi network and then the speaker, you can connect directly to this AirPlay speaker from your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) or desktop/laptop PC (Windows or Mac) running iTunes using Libratone's PlayDirect feature. All you have to do is fire up the Zipp's Wi-Fi connection and it will appear as a Wi-Fi network when you scan for available networks in your settings. You then connect to it and hit the AirPlay icon from within Apple's Music app (it appears at the bottom right of the screen when you call up a song) and you're good to go. It works remarkably well, and in our tests the AirPlay connection offered higher fidelity than a Bluetooth connection.

Libratone Zipp Review

Time was, if you wanted a wooly column of wireless musical pleasure, you had to train a sheep to stand upright and sing. Libratone‘s new Zipp, however, changes that: a wool wrapped portable speaker delivering not only Apple's AirPlay but a tweaked version intended for the wide open spaces that the Zipp - or sheep, for that matter - might go frolicking in. Read on for the SlashGear review. Libratone has been pushing its brand of quirky fabric-clad simplicity for a few years now, and the Zipp follows in the footsteps of the Beat we reviewed last year with more wool wrapping. A 10.2-inch tall, 4.8-inch diameter cylinder, the 4 pound Zipp has a whimsical leather handle and can be dressed up in one of eight different colors of outer sleeve. These range from the sober - black or a pale grey - through to the more eye-catching, such as bright red or purple; each has a simple zip fastening running the length of the speaker. Libratone will offer individual Zipp models - in grey or red - at Apple Stores for $399/£329 apiece, or in three-pack boxes with either black/blue/red or black/pink/yellow covers and a single speaker for $449/£369. Additional covers are available from Libratone direct, priced at $49.95.
