During CES 2011 this time last year, LG unveiled the LW950, a new television that was set to get Full LED backlighting, active 3D and a 400 Hz refresh rate. But after the popularity of its Cinema 3D range, which use passive 3D instead, LG went back to the drawing board, switching active 3D technology for passive and renaming the LW950 as the LW980 along the way. It relies on polarised glasses like the ones you get at the cinema that are not just lighter and more comfortable to wear but also much cheaper to produce. LG first sent us, and several other European reviewers, a version of the new TV back in September 2011. We decided not to publish our review then because we were disappointed by the low contrast ratio and very prevalent clouding that were evident on the prototype. It wasn't long before we got to the bottom of the story. Instead of using 288 banks of LEDs for backlighting, the LW980 only had 96 individually controllable elements. The change of strategy came down to a question of money, with production costs higher than initially expected.
So here it is at last. After a seemingly interminable wait, the new flagship model in LG's LCD TV range, the Nano 55LW980T, is finally here, bringing with it a massive feature count and, hopefully, LG's best flat TV picture quality ever. The most exciting thing about the LG 55LW980T is its use of direct LED lighting, where the LED clusters sit behind the panel, rather than the much more common edge LED lighting system. Although more expensive, the direct LED approach enables TV manufacturers to have much greater control over local luminance levels in their TVs' pictures, which experience has shown consistently results in much better picture quality. The LG 55LW980T has plenty of other neat tricks in its feature locker, too. It's got LG's passive 3D TV technology for a start, complete with no less than seven pairs of 3D glasses thrown in for free. Plus it's got a truly extensive suite of multimedia tools, including playback of video, music and photo files from USB devices or networked, DLNA-capable PCs.
LG's flagship LW980T TV range generated quite a buzz at the recent IFA trade show. Featuring the company's Nano Full LED backlighting technology, the 47- and 55-inch LW980T screens are expected to ship as early as next month, for a currently undisclosed price. We beat back the crowds to take the biggest model, the 1080p 55LW980T LCD TV, for a test drive. These are our first impressions. With a 16.5mm-thick bezel and wafer-thin, 27.5mm-deep chassis, the 55LW980T is certain to get a nod of approval from discerning fashionistas. But, while we appreciate its charming design, that's not the reason the LW980T has got us all hot under the collar. Rather, we're stoked by LG's most advanced panel technology yet, and a new display technology dubbed 'Dual Play'.Even a cursory glance will tell you that the 55LW980T's pictures pop. Much of this fizz can be attributed to the set's Nano Full LED backlight. LG first previewed Nano Full LEDs in its aborted LEX line during IFA 2010, but quickly took them back to the drawing board for additional refinement. The original Nano screens were designed to work with active-shutter glasses, but now they'll work with the cheaper and lighter passive 3D specs.
