We really liked the LG LE8500 series, so it's little surprise we also like the company's LX9500, reviewed here, which is basically the same TV plus 3D compatibility. Unless you really want 3D or love the LX9500's thin frame, however, the less-expensive LE8500 is the better choice. Both offer nearly identical 2D picture quality--with a couple of caveats, it's among the best you can get this year from an LCD--that benefits from deep black levels, highly accurate color, and better-than-expected off-angle fidelity. Unfortunately, LG seems to have rushed with the 3D portion of the LX9500, saddling it with a washed-out picture that's as lackluster as the 2D one is punchy, and no way to adjust it. With two-dimensional material, on the other hand, the stylish, well-featured LG LX9500 series is one of the most impressive LED-based LCDs we've tested this year. We performed a hands-on evaluation of the 47-inch LG 47LX9500, but this review also applies to the 55-inch LG 55LX9500. Both sizes have identical specs and according to the manufacturer should provide very similar picture quality. The LX9500's most eye-catching element is the ultrathin bezel.
Long known for stylish HDTVs, LG once again sets the bar for aesthetics with its Infinia 47LX9500. This stunning HDTV is arguably the company's most beautiful design effort to date, and it features the latest technology, including an integrated 3D transmitter, energy efficient LED backlighting, a 480Hz refresh rate, and a nice assortment of Web applications. And, while it does deliver a sharp, vibrant picture, the set's backlighting produces some blooming. Also, priced at $4,299.99 (list), this 47-inch set is extremely expensive, and that's before you shell out $179.99 (list) for each pair of active shutter 3D glasses. Fans of the edge-to-edge glass look will love the seamless one-piece design of the 47LX9500, which uses extremely thin black bezels to frame the 47-inch panel. Coupled with a thin 1.3-inch cabinet finished with a sliver of clear trim, this TV is as sleek as they come. In order to maintain the set's clean lines, LG opted to mount the Function and Power buttons on the rear of the cabinet, which can make it difficult to adjust settings if you're not using the bundled remote control. Whereas the Sony Bravia KDL-55HX800 ($3,399, ) requires an external 3D transmitter that plugs into a port at the rear of the TV, the LX9500's is built in to the front of the set and remains out of site behind the glass.
