If 3D tickles your fancy, but you don't want to shell out loads of money for expensive active-shutter glasses, then the 42-inch, 1080p LG 42LW550T LED TV might be more up your street. It uses passive 3D technology, so the glasses cost only a couple of quid each, which makes it a much more affordable proposition for larger families. The 42LW550T is essentially the step-down model from the 42-inch telly in the LW650T range. As such, it's priced at a more affordable £850. The TV comes without the 200Hz processing found on its more flamboyant sibling, but still boasts a number of interesting features, including support for a range of Internet services.LG has put plenty of work into its menu system and the results largely justify the effort. All the set's features are now accessible by pressing the home button on the remote control. This calls up a colourful home screen from which you can access the TV's setting pages, select your input source, view the electronic programme guide, select video-on-demand services, and use the Web browser and media-streaming features. Everything is now accessible via the home screen. The TV's settings pages are neatly laid out and presented with crisp, clean graphics, so they're very easy to use.
This model is the 42'' version of the 47'' TV that we tested in our labs, the LG 47LW550T. Everything we said in the original article holds true--the only thing that's different is the size! The only exception is that some manufacturers fit different sized televisions with panels from different sources. In that case, our comments are only valid for the panel that we originally tested. Contrast, black levels, colour handling and ghosting are all subject to change from one panel to another. Manufacturers who do fit the same panel in all of the TVs in a range can expect the same results across the whole range. The only factor which could be prone to slight variation is the brightness, producing slightly different contrast. According to our own tests, and assurances from manufacturers, the results of one TV can accurately be applied to others in the range.
LG's passive Cinema 3D technology has so far proved hit and miss. The 47LW550T impressed, while the 55LW650T disappointed, the 42-inch 42LW550T arrives with mixed expectations. It is also the latest combatant in the increasingly rancorous scuffle between active shutter and FPR (Film Patterned Retarder) 3D technology. The former presents two consecutive full HD images, one for each eye, that are cycled quickly and viewed through a pair of shuttering glasses causing your brain to combine them into a single, three-dimensional image. FPR, on the other hand, uses a polarising film on the front of a screen that creates a 3D image when observed with cheap, non-powered glasses. What's going to be particularly interesting about the 42LW550T is what difference if any the relative smallness of its screen (versus the previously tested 55-inch and 47-inch FPR models) will make to the Cinema 3D experience, as it seems possible, maybe even probable, that its reduced size will mitigate the impact of FPR's potential shortcomings. The 550T part of its name shows that the 42LW550T and its 55-inch and 47-inch siblings belong in the middle of the current LG FPR 3D range, below the top-level LW650Ts and above the LW450Us.
