Leica X1 review

Leica X1 review: overviewLeica's foray into the digital world may have been at a slower and more considered pace than what we're used to seeing, but working in partnership with Panasonic has nevertheless meant that it's managed to saturate a healthy range of the camera market. For more everyday use the company's point-and-shoot C-LUX and enthusiast D-LUX ranges sit at the base of its stable, while the M9 rangefinder and S2 medium format model lie at the other end to cater for professionals. In between the two, and among a handful of intermediate models, sits the X1, which can safely be considered as the company's answer to the growing popularity of compact system cameras. In many ways the model is unique, or at least it was upon its launch in September 2009 and its recent firmware upgrade improves upon the original performance. It begins a new series for the company, pairing a 12.2MP APS-C format CMOS sensor with a 24mm f/2.8 fixed lens, the combination of which produces a camera with an effective focal length of 36mm in 35mm terms. It's targeted at the enthusiast who requires a solid, high-quality model with dependable image quality in a pocketable form, albeit it one who will be willing to part with around £1400 for the privilege.

Leica X1 review

The Leica X1 has a large DSLR-like APS-C CMOS sensor in a compact body for the ultimate quality, but is the X1 the ultimate luxury fixed-lens compact? The What Digital Camera Leica X1 review... The Leica X1 is a high-end, fixed-lens compact camera with a key difference - its large, 12.2 megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor is the same size as those found in the majority of DSLR cameras. Geared towards those seeking optimum picture quality in a discreet body the premium quality Leica Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 lens (a 36mm equivalent in full-frame 35mm terms) should be a favourite for the traditionalist snapper. However, with a 1395 price tag (and that's before adding any further accessories) you'll be needing deep pockets... Leica X1 review - FeaturesThere's no getting around the fact that the Leica X1 is a specialist compact for a knowledgeable, niche market. Anyone considering buying an X1 will desire its fixed lens (no zoom here) as a particular format of working. There's no lens-based nor sensor-based image stabilisation system, instead a system that takes two frames and combines them into one.

Product Survey: Compact Digital Cameras

In some ways, the X1 is a modern interpretation of this approach: it's compact enough to fit in a large pocket, has a bare minimum of extra features, an all-purpose fixed lens, a great sensor and faultless build quality. And although it's easily the most expensive compact digital camera amongst our selection, it remains an affordable option for a Leica, with a launch price of around £1500. Faithful to Leica's traditional aesthetics, the X1 is a simple slab with rounded corners. Its minimalist retro styling is instantly recognisable, and has a timeless quality that's miles away from the sparkly bling found on some of its competitors. It's not much smaller than a film-based compact, making it a large digital compact. That's perfectly normal for a camera with a large sensor, though, and the Sigma DP line is hardly any smaller. The build quality is absolutely faultless, with a lot of attention to detail paid right down to the smallest elements, although the buttons at the back felt a little plastic. That could change in the final version, though, as we were testing a preview. While we were looking at the back of the camera, we were bitterly disappointed by the quality of the screen: the viewing angles might be reasonable, but a 230 000 pixel LCD screen on a camera like this is nothing short of a scandal with even mid-range compacts like the now feature 460 000 pixel OLED displays.
