Kodak Zi8 Pocket HD Video Camera Review

High Definition (HD) video is all the rage right now. I don’t think you can find a new digital camera these days does not record video in HD. With video being easier to capture and all of the video sharing sites out there pocket video cameras are really popular right now. They are small devices to make it really easy to record video and most record in HD. Today we will be looking at one such device, the Zi8 from Kodak. It features 1080p 16:9 video capture, an SD/SDHC card slot, and an external microphone jack to record stereo sound. Geeks.com was nice enough to send the Kodak Zi8 Pocket HD Video Camera over, they are a great place to find cheap camcorders. Since this is refurbished Zi8 from Kodak is comes in the certified refurbished product box. Inside we find everything nicely packed. Getting everything out you have the Zi8 video camera, rechargeable battery, user guide, wrist strap, AV cable, mini HDMI cable, USB power charger, software CD and a soft carrying case. The Zi8 is designed like many pocket video camera, it has the candy bar style with the lens at the top.

Product Survey: Camcorders

From a distance, the Zi8 looks so much like a smartphone that you'd be forgiven for confusing it with one. There's easily enough room on the front for a keyboard, but this is a pocket camcorder and the watchword here is simplicity. That's why there's just a single row of buttons and a joystick underneath the 2.5'' screen which is of a quality rarely seen in camcorders at this price. The four buttons give access to the menu, deleted clips, camcorder mode and playback mode. Every time you switch it on, the device gives you a choice between four different video options: 1080p, 720p at 60 fps, 720p at 30 fps and WVGA (848 x 480 pixels), as well as 5 Megapixel still photos. Your choice of format shouldn't just rely on how much room you have left, but also what you're planning to film. Shooting in 720p at 60 fps is good for fast-moving sports as you get twice as many frames in the sam time period. 1080p really comes into its own on a Full HD TV. If you're using it for blogging, then 720p will be fine, because YouTube, Vimeo and other sites always re-encode HD videos to this format. The frame is very well made, with a shiny finish available in your choice of raspberry pink, turquoise or black.

Kodak Zi8 Review

The Kodak Zi8 impressed us during our review with a combination of superior video quality, features and a reasonable price.Although our first mini HD camcorder rodeo roundup crowned Cisco’s Flip UltraHD the reigning king of mini HD camcorders, six months can make a world of difference. Kodak’s new Zi8 bucks the leader by addressing many of its predecessor’s shortcomings, while systematically outdoing the competition on just about every feature. Combined with a reasonable $180 price tag, Kodak’s Zi8 now confidently struts it stuff as king of the ring.While Flip’s MinoHD and UltraHD still offer a slightly smaller footprint than Kodak’s 2.4-inch by 4.5-inch Zi8, Kodak offers more than enough features to justify the extra bulk. Like the old Zi6, it will shoot 720p HD footage at an extra-fluid 60 frames per second, but also adds full 1080p to the slate for 1920 x 1080 footage at 30 frames per second (not 1440 x 1080 as Sony’s allegedly 1080p Webbie shoots).The chunky AA batteries from the Zi6 disappear in favor of a removable lithium-ion unit, but the SHDC slot remains in place of dedicated, built-in memory. Kodak has also added an external microphone input jack for recording better audio, and electronic image stabilization for attempting to eliminate the shakes that come from such a tiny cam.

Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera (raspberry)

Over the last few years, as the pocket camcorder market has taken off, pioneer Flip Video has narrowly hung onto the lead it built by offering models with arguably superior designs and slightly better video quality. A few companies, including Creative, Sony, and RCA, have been nipping at its heels for a while, but none has been able to overtake Flip's offerings. Until now. While Kodak's Zi8 may not be perfect, it has a lot of the little extras we've been asking for--including electronic image stabilization and external mic support--and delivers very respectable video for a mini camcorder well under $200. For starters, Kodak improved upon the design of last year's Zi6 and this year's ruggedized Zx1, both of which we thought decent, but not great. The Zi8 looks slicker than the Zi6, and while it's far from the smallest or lightest pocket camcorder we've tested, it is fairly compact, measuring 2.4 inches by 4.5 inches by 0.9 inch and weighing 4.8 ounces. This model comes in three colors Kodak dubs black, aqua, and raspberry, and it has a sharp and generously sized 2.5-inch LCD on the back. The only noteworthy drawback is that all three models are fingerprint magnets and you'll find yourself constantly wiping down the camcorder.
