Kodak EasyShare Z950

The Kodak EasyShare Z950 is a fairly dry camera, but in a good way. After testing so many cameras with hot, new special features lately, the Z950's straightforward "I'm a camera, I take pictures" package is a nice change. Its most exciting element is a 35mm-equivalent lens with a 10x zoom in a moderately compact body. That's not even a wide-angle lens that other manufacturers have gravitated toward lately. There are no outlandish shooting options, either, but you do get manual and semimanual controls. As long as you can cope with its slightly finicky shooting performance, it's a reasonably priced way to get an uncomplicated point-and-shoot camera with a 10x zoom. The design and controls for the Z950 are very similar to the less expensive Z915, but more polished. It comes in black only with a body made of a mix of metal and plastic as well as a dark gray rubberized grip and thumb rest. The overall feel is comfortable and solid. Though there are more compact 10x zoom cameras, the Z950 is a tight package able to slip into a larger handbag or coat pocket. Up front is the camera's main attraction: an image-stabilized 10x zoom lens. It's not especially wide or fast, but it will get you closer to your subject.

Product Survey: Compact Digital Cameras 2009

The visual design of the Kodak Z950 is not unlikable, though its throwback looks may put some people off. This is a compact that doesn't really go after elegance and slimness, aiming instead at a somewhat solid look and comfortable handling. The handgrip has a rubbery coating that has a rather nice feel, and the camera is well proportioned. The zoom control is a little 'soft' and you'll have little trouble zooming to exactly the right spot on the first try. But the most annoying thing about the zoom, obviously, is the wide-angle, which isn't really a wide-angle at all, with its minimum focal length of 35 mm. The LCD screen is large and its display is very fluid, even in low light, but the resolution is a little low at 230,000 dpi for a 3'' display and the vertical viewing angles are a little narrow. The graphical interface is user-friendly, but there are still some frustrating aspects remain. For example, by default, the joystick controls a shooting setting and it's just too easy to change it accidentally. At 2.6 seconds, startup isn't really what you can call fast. Focusing, on the other hand, is fairly speedy, provided you stay in wide-angle; at 10x, it has trouble making up its mind and takes well over a second to home in.

Kodak EasyShare Z950 Digital Camera Review

The EasyShare Z950 is a high-end point and shoot that captures 12 megapixel images and has a long 10x zoom. But we found that it had only lackluster performance, with slightly soft images and fuzzy video. Missing from this list is an A/V out cable: the camera comes with no way to show the images or videos on a TV. Kodak will sell you an analog video and audio out cable for $25, but there is no digital version. So even though the Z950 can shoot high definition video, you have to spend an extra $25 to watch it in standard definition. We found that the Z950 did a very decent job of capturing color; the majority of the colors in the images we captured for our tests were very close to the originals. We test this by photographing a color chart under tightly controlled conditions, and then using Imatest to analyze the captured images to see how accurate the colors are. Click here for more on how we test color As you can see from the samples below, the Z950 did a good job with most colors. The only ones that were slightly inaccurate were the yellows and reds. The yellows came out a little muted, but the reds were a little deeper than we typically like to see.
