Kodak EasyShare Max Z990 review

We reviewed the Kodak EasyShare Max Z990's close relation, the Z981, in August 2010 and criticised it for its oversaturated images and 'plastic brick' design and build. What's changed with this hefty 30x superzoom since then? Not a lot on those two fronts, where we're sad to say that it's pretty much business as usual. Elsewhere, though, Kodak has made some subtle but important changes to its spec. To see how this has affected its overall performance, we headed off to the woods for a day's shooting. Let's start with the good news: the price. At £220, this is a bargain. There's no other way to describe a 30x superzoom at this price, with a 12-megapixel sensor capable of shooting 1080p video at 30fps. A lens of this specification alone, equivalent to 28-840mm, would cost 10 times the price of this whole camera if you were ever able to buy it for your dSLR. The 28-840mm zoom on this camera is truly impressive, allowing you to pick out far off subjects like the squirrel, which would be well out of the range of a less powerful set of glass (click image to enlarge). Eagle-eyed readers will spot that at 12 megapixels the Z990 has a lower resolution than the Z981, but don't let this put you off.

Kodak EasyShare Max

The Kodak EasyShare Max is an aggressively-priced ultrazoom that still seeks to deliver all the performance of this segment’s leaders. But a few design missteps and technical limitations leave this camera feeling constrained. The interface’s slow operation will also frustrate users, and cause more annoyance than the “Easy” Share brand name suggests. So the EasyShare Max does not support custom white balance, and it’s a major omission that will continually affect all our lab tests, but none more so than the color test. Unfortunately, in addition to the absence of custom white balance, the camera’s automatic white balance had trouble with our lab setup. We experimented a bit, and found “Daylight” to be the most accurate preset, but even this was still pretty far off. More on how we test color. Ultimately, the Max returned an error rating of 6.47, which is absolutely abysmal. In fact it’s the worst color performance any of us can remember. This camera’s raw score therefore lags way behind the other models in our comparison group.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Once a keen bridge camera maker, Kodak now only has one such model in its range—the Easyshare Max Z990. It's also the manufacturer's first camera to use a BSI CMOS sensor, not to mention a 30x zoom lens. On paper, it looks like this bridge could give the current market heavyweights a run for their money. Let's see if it lives up to expectations. Appearances can be deceiving. The Kodak Max Z990 isn't significantly bigger or heavier than the Sony HX100V, for example, as it's only four millimetres wider, one millimetre taller and three millimetres longer. Plus, it's only 10 grammes heavier. In spite of that, it feels like a much more imposing camera to handle. This is no doubt due to its bulky, angular design, its huge grip handle, the very boxy and very high-set viewfinder and the large lens barrel. Grip is excellent and the camera feels solid and sturdy to use. It does, nevertheless, feel heavy. The camera's weight isn't evenly balanced either, as the four AA batteries in the grip handle add extra weight to support in the palm of your hand. On the back, the Z990 is equipped with a 460,000-dot screen. Mid-grey tones are displayed a bit too darkly and colours in general aren't reproduced accurately (deltaE = 7.1), with a slight blue overtone.
