Buying Guide: Best iPod and iPhone speaker dock: 24 tested

By TechRadar, published 11-11-2011

Best iPod iPhone speaker dockClose your eyes and imagine, for a moment, that you've popped to town on a sunny afternoon to buy yourself a speaker dock for your iPhone or iPod. Easy, right? Well it is until you get to the shops and are confronted by row upon row of the things. All shapes and sizes, from cheap and cheerful to those costing hundreds of pounds. Even if the store attendants encourage you to have a listen to each in turn, a noisy shop floor is hardly a good environment to make an informed choice about which sounds best. So we had ourselves an early Christmas and collected together dozens of iPod and iPhone docks, put them through their paces and picked out 24 to tell you about. And by put them through their paces, we mean repeated side-by-side tests - to the point that we're sic...

Review: Jamo wEAR In30

By TechRadar, published 06-12-2011

Jamo may best be known for speakers, but the company also offers a small range of in-ear phones of which the wEAR In30 is the middle model. The drive unit is identical to that used in, at least, one Klipsch model (Klipsch being Jamo's parent company these days), but other details are different and there's no reason to suppose that this would be a Klipsch retread. Jamo's description mentions 'passive noise-cancelling', by which is simply meant noise-blocking, as this model (like the others here) has no active anti-noise features. As it happens, we felt this was by a small margin the most effective at blocking external noise, but there's not really much in it. We also felt that it had the most noisy cable, very much prone to convey friction noise (against skin and clothing) into the ears. We...

Tutorial: The complete guide to AirPlay

By TechRadar, published 05-01-2011

AirPlay was originally demoed by Steve Jobs during the announcement of the new Apple TV, but then its memory slipped away. Maybe it was the long wait for iOS 4.2 that dulled its impact, or perhaps it was the lack of AirPlay-compatible devices on the market. Either way, this is a technology to shout about. While streaming a video from your iPhone to your Apple TV (as shown by Steve) is great, there are many more uses for AirPlay, as you will find out here. This includes the ability to stream music to every room in your home without wires.Of course, as we mentioned before, there are few AirPlay devices on the market at the moment and they're likely to be fairly expensive when they do arrive, so we've looked at a number of AirPlay alternatives you might want to try out using some kit you may ...

Dell has unveiled its latest Alienware laptops, with a refreshed M11X gaming netbook joined by the 18-inch M18X and the M14X.The headliner is the M18X – very much a desktop replacement rather than something you'll be carrying around with you in daily life – which apparently "lays claim to the title of the most powerful 18-inch gaming laptop in the universe". Review: Linn Akurate system

By TechRadar, published 18-02-2011

World-famous conductor Herbert von Karajan's response, on being introduced to the delights of the compact disc in the early 1980s, was "All else is gaslight". It's a great one-liner, but was he right? Wasn't CD little more than a digital version of the vinyl LP anyway, with a laser replacing a stylus? If so, then Linn's Akurate DS system is far more radical. It takes the whole process of listening to music in the home to another level, replacing physical sources like CD or SACD with music stored on a hard drive, while offering remote access from the comfort of your armchair. Moreover, the resolution of source material – up to 24-bit/192kHz – is much higher than CD's 16-bit/44.1kHz. Akurate is Linn's midway offering, sitting between its entry-level Majik and flagship Klimax ranges. It's...

Review: Panasonic BFT800EBK

By TechRadar, published 02-08-2011

Since the advent of flat TVs, manufacturers have been coming up with audio solutions that fit the new 'hang on the wall' ethos. But few, if any, have done so as comprehensively as this system. The centrepiece is essentially a long black bar, into which Panasonic has crammed two stereo speakers, a Blu-ray player capable of playing back the latest 3D discs, an FM tuner and even an iPod/iPhone dock. Also included is a chunky but nicely finished subwoofer you'll need to stow away.Happily, this connects via Wi-Fi to the main system. The bar can also join your home's Wi-Fi network to access both BD-Live functions and Panasonic's online portal. The design of the 'bar is extremely cool, especially the way a central 'door' slides right to reveal the iPod dock and left to reveal the BD tray. It only...

Review: Klipsch HD Theatre 500

By TechRadar, published 02-08-2011

The popularity of this type of compact speaker package has mostly been driven by the switch from CRTs to flatscreen TVs. For, while the case for flatscreen TVs is overwhelming on most counts, sound quality has suffered because even large flatpanels don't lend themselves to good acoustic design.Subs in particular don't like being crammed into shallow enclosures, while satellite speaker design also suffers. The left and right speakers are too close to each other, and to the centre speaker, to give a wide spread of sound. They are also hobbled by the single structure that surrounds them all, which acts as a sounding board, delivering a characteristically wishy-washy sound, with poor bass dynamics. This is where specialist producers such as Klipsch enter the fray. This system is only available...
