Today we are looking at yet another pocket HD Camcorder / Camera. This one is from JVC and records in full 1080p HD, has 4x digital zoom, is very stylish and even takes 8-megapixel still images. Many of these pocket HD camcorders do not shoot great photos or no photos as all, but the JVC Picsio does shoot 8-megapixel photos. Could this be the deciding factor on what pocket camcorder to get? Let’s take a look and find out! Special thanks to Geeks.com for providing us with the JVC Picsio Pocket HD Camcorder / Camera to review. Geeks.com is a great place to find Digital Camcorders. We received the Picsio from Geeks.com so it was nicely packaged. Since it is a refurbished product it comes in a plain box. Inside you will find the JVC Picsio camcorder, USB cable, AV cable, hand strap and a user’s guide. It seems like many companies cannot go wrong when it comes to these pocket camcorders. They all pretty much do the job and they shoot in perfect HD quality. The small size of these camcorders makes them perfect for everyday carrying and even better for travel. No one wants to carry around a huge camcorder!
The JVC GC-FM1 HD pocket camcorder shoots some of the best bright-light video we've seen, but it's hampered by its plastic build, its finicky controls, and the execution of its marquee features. On paper, the JVC GC-FM1 ($200 as of 10/20/09) is loaded. Specs-wise, it has only one rival in the high-definition pocket camcorder realm: the excellent Kodak Zi8. But pocket-camcorder championships aren't won on paper. Like the Zi8, the GC-FM1 shoots 1080p video and offers digital image stabilization, two positive distinguishing factors in the now-crowded HD pocket camcorder market. And just as the Zi8 does, this JVC pocket camcorder has a landscape/macro toggle, the ability to shoot still photos (8 megapixels, versus the Zi8's 5-megapixel sensor), an HDMI-out port for viewing footage on an HDTV (no HDMI cable is included, however), and an SDHC card slot for storing videos and still images. However, the GC-FM1's feature set is much better in theory than it is in practice. Since this device has no flip-out USB connector, you have to offload clips and images to your PC via an included USB cable. It also falls short of its pint-size competitors in usability, durability, audio quality, and controls--and that's frustrating, because JVC's first pocket camcorder shoots some of the best-quality bright-light video we've seen to date.
