The GZ-X900's substandard low-light performance undercuts the camcorder's clever features and slick appearance. JVC's Everio X GZ-X900 high-definition camcorder ($1000 as of September 25, 2009) has a sleek design, includes a few innovative features, and generates acceptable HD video under bright lighting conditions. Unfortunately, the unit's noticeably subpar low-light performance renders it a poor choice for common everyday use. The camcorder's svelte black design looks elegant and feels comfortable. Some of the Everio X GZ-X900's specs look good: a 1/2.33-inch CMOS imaging chip, a top AVCHD encoding rate of 24 megabits per second, 9-megapixel still photos, the ability to record to standard SDHC memory cards, and a slow-motion setting that records at frame rates of up to 600 frames per second (at reduced image sizes). Other specs lag behind what comparably priced competing models offer. You can shoot only full 1920-by-1080 high-definition video at 60 interlaced frames per second (JVC omits film-like 24p and Web-friendly 30p modes). You also get a limited 5X optical zoom lens, and the camcorder lacks jacks for headphones or external mics.
JVC's GZ-900 is a high-level camcorder that films in Full HD and has a 9 Megapixel photo mode. So has the manufacturer managed to meet the challenge of an 'all-in-one' device? The X900 is a very attractive camcorder, and its flat, pocket-sized frame and glossy finish both point to a high quality product. The lack of a handle or a strap is still surprising, but you needn't worry: the X900 has been specially designed to be held in your hand, but a wrist-strap is also included in case you drop it. As soon as you open the screen and choose the 'Camera' mode on the scroll wheel at the back, the camcorder switches itself on and is ready to film. A PLAY/REC button on the side allows you to switch to playback mode to watch the videos you've just filmed. There's no viewfinder, so everything is done on the screen, which partly uses a touch-based controls. You can slide your finger up and down a tactile strip along one side of the screen to scroll through the menus, but you still have to confirm your choice by pressing a conventional OK button. These controls can be rather capricious, though, and sometimes you have to press several times to make your choice.
Traditional camcorders have a basic style that hasn’t really changed since the ‘80s. Oh, you’ll see a few attempts at a vertical shape now and then, or some fun with body materials, like the new Samsung models that use the Touch of Color finish first seen on Samsung HDTVs. But JVC has taken a completely radical approach with its Everio X, a high-def video maker that looks like a chic clutch held by a Louis Vuitton model scampering down a catwalk. This is by no means all beauty and no brains, either. The AVCHD camcorder has a 10.3MP CMOS sensor and records at 24 Mbps, the best compression rate possible for the format. It even takes 9-megapixel stills, the current camcorder peak for native resolution. Like a legit Vuitton bag, you’ll certainly pay for the style, since it’s close to a grand for the package. Let’s see if this camcorder is as much an object of desire as it appears to be on the surface. You’ve seen the accompanying images; this is radical departure for a fully-featured camcorder. It measures 1.5 inches wide, 2.67 high, 4.9 deep and weighs 10.5 ounces fully loaded. Since there’s no hard drive, as found on most JVC Everio camcorders, this SDHC-card based model can easily be carried all day and popped into a pocket if you need a break.
