Peruse any electronics store, whether virtual or brick-and-mortar, and you'll be overwhelmed by the breadth of choices offered in the iPod speaker category. As such, it is of the utmost importance that manufacturers of such goods make their products not just stand but jump out from the crowd. Taking an otherwise fairly standard iPod-ready AM/FM radio alarm clock and slapping a $250 price tag on it is surely one way of doing this; we're just not sure it's the right way. This is what JBL has done with the latest addition to its On Time speaker dock, the Micro. The sleek and compact unit sounds good and offers a nice array of features, but it's not the easiest to use; quite frankly, even if it were, JBL would still need to lop a good $100 off the MSRP for us to consider it. The JBL On Time Micro may be the smallest in the series but it's not the most compact docking speaker we've come across. The base of the unit is 7.7 inches in diameter and the speaker dome stands nearly 5 inches tall. Though it's not supersmall, the Micro should fit comfortably on your average nightstand. The bulbous, brushed-silver speaker grille and faintly eery glow emanating from the LCD and backlit buttons give the unit the vaguely extraterrestrial look that we see repeated throughout the On Time line.
Let's go ahead and assume that if you're spending more than $200 on an iPod/iPhone speaker dock/alarm clock, you're expecting it to sound awesome, or at least to be packed with cool features. Therein lies the problem with JBL's latest product, the On Time Micro ($249 list) - while it does have some excellent qualities, it doesn't deliver on features for the price. If booming bass and powerful speakers or extras like streaming audio or Internet radio are on your must-have list, this isn't the dock for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for a stylish place to park your iPod with a simple, versatile alarm clock and an excellent remote control, the On Time Micro makes a worthy companion for your bedside table. Vaguely resembling the top hemisphere of the Death Star, the dome-shaped On Time Micro has a metallic speaker grille covering most of its surface. There's a circle sliced off the dome - this is the spot on the Death Star, where its laser would emerge to destroy Princess Leia's planet, but with the On Time Micro, this is where you'll find the unit's controls and dock your iPod or iPhone. Our model had black glossy plastic in this section, with silver-colored, blue-underlit buttons, but JBL also offers the dock in Aluminum or White - it's a pretty sharp-looking product.
