The terms "portable" and "top-notch audio" are rarely linked, primarily because it's difficult to make speakers lightweight and easy-to-pack without sacrificing sound quality. And to a certain extent, size does matter if you expect to have stereo separation or hear low frequencies. JBL's On Stage IV is a $149.95 (direct) portable iPod and iPhone dock that, while not immune to the typical issues that plague portable docks, offers better-than-average sound. At moderate levels, there's a pleasant bass response that is often absent from smaller docks. A remote control with full iPod navigation adds to the value, but the On Stage IV, which distorts at higher volumes, still seems a bit overpriced. Measuring 2.7 by 8.3 by 8.3 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 1.6 pounds, the overall shape of the On Stage IV is hard to describe. Implementing what JBL describes as a "weave" design, the docking area is surrounded by overlapping, alternating strips of glossy black plastic and two metallic speaker grilles. Beneath the grilles, each speaker strip has two 1-inch transducers, and a small triangular metallic grille at the front of the device houses what appears to be a port to move air, which helps strengthen bass response.
