iLuv Audio Cube (iMM747)

Looks can be deceiving. Sometimes a tiny iPod speaker dock can pump out remarkable sound. Sometimes a big iPod speaker dock with large, noticeable speakers sounds weak and distorted. The iLuv Audio Cube iMM747 ($149.99 list) fits in the latter category. The Audio Cube looks like a mini-home theater for your iPod. It measures a blocky 4.9 by 14.2 by 3.2 (HWD) inches and weighs 2.3 pounds. The main dock is flanked by two rounded cube speakers attached to the main body by a gray plastic bar. The dock itself uses a clever combination of a pivoting connector and a sliding backplate, both of which ensure everything from an iPod Touch to an iPad 2 fit snugly on the device. It can handle virtually all iPods, iPhones, and iPads available; the Audio Cube is compatible with all iterations of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPod Nano, plus the iPad and iPod Classic, and it worked with our iPad 2. A small plastic foot/lip on the back keeps the dock steady and preventing it from leaning backward or forward. Power, Volume, Play/Pause, Rewind, and Skip buttons sit just in front of the dock connector, almost flush against the body of the dock.

A good speaker dock provides an attractive place to recharge your portable device, crank out some tunes, and maybe even act as an alarm clock. They're a common fixture for most modern living rooms and bedrooms, keeping us entertained and ensuring that our iPods and iPhones stay charged. With the iPad, Apple introduced a new portable product into our vernacular, and several companies, including iLuv, have responded with new lines of iPad-specific speakers and charging stations. The iLuv iMM747 ($149) is one such product, adapting a traditional, basic speaker dock design to the wider form of the iPad. Arguably, the iPad's size and its tendency to be wrapped in third-party cases, makes it an awkward match for any type of docking product. As a consumer, it's certainly worth exploring other audio solutions that don't rely on a dock connection. Already, we're seeing companies such as Logitech and Aliph approach iPad owners with wireless speaker solutions, leveraging the iPad's Bluetooth audio capabilities. That said, if you have your heart set on a speaker dock solution for your iPad, the iLuv iMM747 is one of only a few solutions out there.
