iHome iP1 Review
We review the iP1 iPod dock which is part of iHome's Studio Series and is the first home audio system to feature Bongiovi Acoustics' Digital Power Station. If the iHome brand seems familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen or heard their products at your favorite large-scale retailer. In 2005 iHome began making affordable clock radios for the iPod and since then has expanded their product line to include a dizzying array of portable speakers, home stereo systems, earbuds and even more clock radios. iHome, though very successful and popular, is not what we’d characterize as a “high end” brand, but with the introduction of the iP1, the company aims to change that perception.Decked out with powerful digital amplifiers, individually enclosed speakers and a proprietary DSP chip that promises to improve sound by “adding back what the MP3 took away” the iHome iP1 certainly looks and reads like a high-end iPod speaker dock. In this review, we’ll put the iP1 through its paces and see if its sound measures up to the all of the company’s hype.The first thing we noticed about the iP1 was its weight.

The iP1 iPod dock aims to restore what compression has robbed from your music, but it suffers from some sound flaws. Over the past few years, most of us have made a musical sacrifice: We've switched from listening to CDs to listening to MP3 files, and in the process we've lost some of the nuances of the music in order to have easily portable digital tunes. But what if you could have your MP3s and your high-quality audio, too? That's the promise of the iHome iP1, an iPod dock that claims to restore what compression technologies like MP3 take out. iHome says that the $300 iP1 uses "a complex chip-based algorithm" developed by Bongiovi Acoustics to restore "harmonics, brightness, clarity and presence" while also boosting the bass. How well does the technology work? To my ears, it sometimes works a little too well. The iP1 has a blue button marked with a B that turns the special technology on and off. There's no doubt that engaging the algorithm makes a big difference. The volume jumps up, and both bass and treble become more pronounced. iHome says that the iP1 boasts 100 watts of power distributed among four speakers; but I found that without the B button on, the iP1 wouldn't be loud enough to drive any self-respecting party.

These days you have to create something pretty compelling to ask 300 bucks for an iPod speaker dock, and iHome delivers with its iP1. A dramatic departure not only from the company’s previous designs, but iPod speaker docks in general, it features audio enhancement technology developed by record producer and sound engineer Tony Bongiovi, cofounder of Bongiovi Acoustics. Although the $299 price tag may seem off-putting at first, the iP1’s studio-grade sound quality and innovative design more than justify the expense. For the most part, iPod dock designs tend to forget about an integral part of the device—the iPod itself. With the exception of a few Altec Lansing models, most docks look like the placement of the iPod is an afterthought. Past iHome docks such as the iH12 and JBL docks such as the On Time 400IHD stick the iPod on top of the device, like a bad cake topper. In contrast, the iP1 doesn’t look complete until an iPod is placed on it. The design of the iP1 is incredibly sparse, yet also futuristic. The iPod sits front and center, and is flanked on either side by two 4-inch, 40-watt woofers and two 1-inch, 10-watt tweeters in the upper corners.

We don't associate the iHome brand with "premium" audio and cutting-edge design, but the folks there are giving it their best shot with the 100-watt iP1, which has a new look for the company known for its budget iPod audio systems. The first thing you notice about the iP1 is that it has a very distinct, industrial look. It's all black with translucent, dark tinted plastic glass on the front supporting two, rather deep cylindrical speakers (they extend a little more than 6 inches out the back). Weighing 8 pounds, the system has some heft to it, but you can easily move it around the room, though it's a little awkward to carry. The iP1 has a set of "custom-designed" 4-inch woofers and 1-inch silk dome tweeters that are powered by Bongiovi Acoustics' proprietary Digital Power Station processor. In terms of connectivity, there's a standard audio input to connect other audio sources along with a component AV output and a remote control. It also works with iPhones; it's GSM shielded, so you can dock the iPhone without having to toggle it to airplane mode. We could lament the lack of a built-in alarm clock or radio on the iP1. However, all iPods have built-in clocks with alarms that will rouse you out of bed in the morning--just be sure to leave the iP1's speakers turned on.
