GoPro HD Hero2: Outdoor Edition review

While you can get camcorders such as the Samsung W200 that have rugged designs to keep them water and shock resistant, the GoPro HD Hero2: Outdoor Edition has been designed to be taken where you wouldn't dare take other camcorders. Its waterproof casing not only protects the camera from the depths, but it can also be easily mounted onto helmets, bikes and other objects. This makes it an incredibly versatile camera, perfect if you're a keen extreme sports fan. The microphone has been specially designed to cut out wind noise, so if you're going to slap the GoPro HD Hero2: Outdoor Edition onto your head and jump out of a plane, then it'll do a good job of capturing your whoops and screams. It's obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the design of the GoPro HD Hero2: Outdoor Edition to make it easily one of the best outdoor sports camcorders we've seen. Having a small LCD screen on the front of the camera - as opposed to the back - is a nice touch, making it easy to set up when it's mounted.Capable of capturing resolutions of 720p, 960p and 1080p with varying angles, it does a great job of capturing footage.

Camcorder Reviews

GoPro has become a staple of the booming sports mini-cam market. Released in late 2011, the HD Hero2 has corrected some of the issues that afflicted the previous versions, with greater connectivity and a more intuitive design. One thing you need to know about the Hero2 (in the case of this review, the Outdoor Edition) is that it is a package. Carefully nested inside a see-through box, it comes with a variety of accessories: a head strap, adhesive supports, a pivoting mount and a waterproof housing (the Hero2 can go to depths of up to 60 metres), allowing you to install the camera on your car, helmet or handlebar. And each accessory is compatible with previous version of GoPro. The boxy, rectangular shape of the all-plastic casing gives it a strikingly different look than most of its kind. The HD Hero2 is a remarkably light and compact camcorder. It can be used along with the waterproof and shockproof see-through housing, so you have nothing to fear while you're flying down a steep slope. To turn the camcorder on, you hold down the button on the front for a few seconds, and a light turns on. Then you use the same button to select Photo mode, Video mode or Settings.

GoPro HD Hero2 Outdoor Edition

The GoPro HD Hero2 Outdoor Edition is a compact camcorder designed to record your extreme adventures. Whether you're skydiving, rock climbing, or snowboarding, the Hero2 can survive the elements thanks to its sophisticated protective case. It's also fairly inexpensive for a helmet camera at $299.99 (direct), so if it does drop from an extreme height the replacement cost will be less than that of the competing Contour+ ($499.99, 3 stars) camcorder. Design and Features The HD Hero2 camera itself is as basic as it can get. The camera is a silver cuboid with two control buttons, a monochrome LCD, and a wide-angle lens. It measures 1.6 by 2.4 by 1.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.3 ounces, which makes it a bit smaller and lighter than the 2.3 by 1.3 by 3.9 inch, 5.3 ounce Contour+. Adding the protective housing to the GoPro increases its weight a fair amount, bringing it up to 5.9 ounces. The camera has just two buttons. The front button acts as a power toggle and mode selector; tapping it cycles through video recording, still capture, burst still capture, and the settings menu. The top button is used to start recording, grab a photo, and navigate through the menu system. Because of its simple design, the menus can be a bit tricky to scroll through, although there are, thankfully, only a few settings to configure.
