Fujifilm X-E1 Review

When Fujifilm launched the X-Pro 1 into the market, there were a lot of people who couldn't help but be impressed, whether it was by the camera's looks or its image quality. However, the price tag was a good enough reason for many to look away. Fujifilm was quick to assess the situation, and quite promptly put the cheaper X-E1 out into the market. Now to cut costs for the X-E1, Fujifilm did have to nix some features from the X-Pro 1. Gone is the amazing hybrid viewfinder that we loved on the X-Pro 1, replaced by an electronic viewfinder instead. The good thing though is that the EVF on the X-E1 out-specs the one on the X-Pro1 (2.3 million dots vs. 1.44 million dots). The X-E1 in all its glory is a gorgeous camera, but does it live up to the X series moniker and further, does it justify you spending your hard earned money on a piece of metal and silicon? We find out. The Fujifilm X-E1 comes equipped with quite a robust set of features, sometimes making the X-Pro 1 seem like an overkill. For starters, as we already mentioned, the hybrid viewfinder has been replaced with an EVF, which to be honest, is a tricky difference to gauge. The EVF in of itself does a great job, rendering a scene quite well even in low light and with very little lag, but those who love the pure rangefinder experience might consider this a downgrade.

Fujifilm X-E1 Review

The Fujifilm X-E1 is a new compact system camera featuring a retro design that bears more than a passing resemblance to its big brother, the X-Pro1. At the heart of the X-E1 is the same 16.3 megapixel APS-C sized “X-Trans” CMOS sensor, which has a colour filter array that mimics film grain and no optical low-pass filter for higher resolution images. The X lens mount has a short flange-back distance of just 17.7mm, and a new standard 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS zoom lens is available on launch which features a traditional aperture ring and an iris diaphragm with rounded aperture blades. The X-E1 has a 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder, a built-in flash, in-camera raw conversion, a range of film simulation modes, multiple exposure and panoramic shooting modes, a number of auto bracketing options and Full HD video recording capabilities. The Fujifilm X-E1 is available in all-black or silver and black and costs £749 in the UK and $1000 in the US body-only, or $1399 with the new 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens.

Fujifilm X-E1

Review Summary: The Fuji X-E1 may be the baby brother to the X-Pro1 compact system camera, but in many ways is its equal. With the same impressive 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor as the flagship model, the X-E1 also does away with a low-pass filter and produces images with great detail and high ISO performance, while the X-Trans array works to avoid moire patterns. While the stylishly retro X-E1 looks a lot like its bigger sibling, it's also a lot lighter -- and less expensive -- despite boasting many of the same features.Pros: Produces superior image quality that's better than many DSLRs; Handsome and functional camera design recalls classic rangefinder models; Surprisingly good kit lens.Cons: Mixed-bag operational performance, with sluggish startup and mediocre autofocus speed and shot-to-shot times; Video quality is only so-so.Price and availability: The Fuji X-E1 has been available since November 2012 as a kit with the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens for US$1,400, or body-only for US$1,000. Similar to the X-E1 but smaller lighter larger sensor cheaper But ...

Fujifilm X-E1 review

The Fujifilm X-E1 is the second mirrorless model from the company to use the X-mount. It was launched in September 2012 and has the same rangefinder aesthetic and analogue controls as its forerunner the X-Pro 1. In many ways the X-E1 can be seen as a slimmed down, more affordable version of the X-Pro 1, lacking the former's hybrid optical viewfinder, but sharing most other features including the same 16 Megapixel APS-C X-trans CMOS sensor. Though it's lost a hybrid optical viewfinder, the X-E1 gains a very impressive electronic one in its place. An OLED design with 2.3 million dots, it ranks alongside the Sony NEX-6 as one of the best EVFs currently in use. One of the biggest criticisms of the X-Pro 1 was its slow AF performance and Fujifilm has moved quickly to address this issue with improvements that claim focus times of 0.1s. X-Pro 1 owners will have been delighted to see similar improvement rolled out in a firmware update for that model. The X-Pro1 launched with three X-mount lenses and Fujifilm has announced announced two more including the Fujinon XF18-55mm f2.8-4 R LM OIS, the first zoom for the system, and the standard bundle for the X-E1.

Fujifilm X-E1 (Preview)

Note that because of the similarities between the X-E1 and X-Pro 1 in many of its key systems and specifications, some of the material in this review is adapted from previously-published content on the X-Pro 1. When Fujifilm launched the X system in January 2012, it did so with an unusually high-end body: the X-Pro1. With its unique hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder, solid metal body and analogue dial-led control philosophy, it was clearly targeted at professionals and enthusiasts looking for an updated take on the classic rangefinder concept. The X-Pro1 was generally well-received, but its price was always likely to limit its appeal. Fujifilm's X-E1 aims to broaden the line's appeal to wider range of enthusiasts, and will compete directly with the likes of the Sony Alpha NEX-7 and Olympus OM-D E-M5. The X-E1 is in essence a slimmed-down X-Pro1, with the large, complex and expensive hybrid finder replaced by a purely-electronic viewfinder. Not any old EVF though - it uses a 2.36M dot OLED unit, out-speccing the X-Pro1's 1.44M dot LCD finder. In return its rear screen is slightly downgraded in terms of both size and resolution, to a still-respectable 2.8" 460k dot LCD - according to Fujifilm this is necessary to keep the camera's size down.

Fujifilm X-E1

The Fujifilm X-E1 ($1,399 list with 18-55mm lens) is the second interchangeable lens camera in Fuji's X series. It omits the hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder that is included with the top-end X-Pro1, and instead includes an extremely sharp OLED EVF. Its 16-megapixel X-Trans CMOS image sensor uses a larger 6-by-6 array pattern of red, green, and blue pixels, which promises to produce more natural, film-like images than standard 4-by-4 Bayer pattern; it also eliminates the need for a low-pass filter, as it is not prone to the moir effect. The camera does produce excellent images and will make the right type of shooter very happy, but it isn't quite as good as our Editors' Choice for high-end compact interchangeable lens cameras, the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Design and Features The X-E1 features the same retro styling that has adorned many a mirrorless camera. Our review unit was chrome with black leatherette, but there's also an all-black version available. It measures just 2.9 by 5.1 by 1.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 12.3 ounces without a lens.

Fujifilm X-E1

Photography is supposed to be fun right? Fujifilm thinks so. For the last few years the X-series has been defined by a return to both retro looks and a retro shooting style, capturing the irreplaceable experience of hands-on photography that many of us grew up with. Fujifilm's latest foray, the X-E1, can be understood mainly as a compact version of the excellent X-Pro1, and it co-opts that camera's mechanical, all-manual control, which we enjoyed so much last year. Unfortunately, the X-Pro1's high-tech hybrid viewfinder has not made the transition. Of course the X-Pro1 was more than just a good time. Combined with some stunning prime lenses, this predecessor captured remarkably sharp images on its new “X-Trans” CMOS sensor. The same technology is in use on the X-E1, leaving us with very high hopes for this review. Iterating on the distinctive look of the X-Pro1, the X-E1’s retrospective styling is merely a vessel for a slew of fun, satisfying mechanical dials. While the X-Pro1’s glitzy hybrid viewfinder is replaced by a standard EVF, the body itself is compact compared to its inspiration. Yet the hardware hasn’t been downsized at all, and marks the second outing of Fujifilm’s excellent “X-Trans” CMOS sensor.

Fuji X-E1 review

Recommended awardUpdated: Now with a page comparing the Fuji X-E1 with the Fuji X-Pro1.In recent years, Fuji has enjoyed great success, especially critically, with its premium series of X cameras. The Fuji X-E1 is the second in the lineup to feature interchangeable lenses, and is an addition to, rather than a replacement for, the Fuji X-Pro1. Technically, it sits below the Fuji X-Pro1, both in terms of specs and cost, and as such there are notable differences between the two. Widely praised by both critics and the audience, the Fuji X-Pro1's sensor is comparable to some full-frame sensors in our lab tests, and the images it produces are fantastic. It is this 16.1 million pixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor that is also included in the Fuji X-E1. There's always been one huge drawback for the consumer audience when it comes to the Fuji X-Pro1 - the price. It currently retails for around 1,200/AU$1,200/US$1,700, body only, with each of the three prime optics retailing for around 500/AU$650/US$600 each.By comparison, the Fuji X-E1 can currently be bought, body only, for around 729/AU$1,198/US$999.

Fujifilm XE-1 Review

Fujifilm's stylish X-E1 sheds modern frivolities for a singular focus on photo quality, and a retro look to match. Fujifilm is doing something unique with the high-end X-Series. It's not only producing strong compact cameras that rival low-to-mid-range DSLRs, but crafting beautiful instruments that look more like luxury goods than gadgets. Strap one around your neck, and all you're missing is a Panerai watch or Montblanc pen to complement it. Such is the case with Fujifilm's X-E1. But at a list price of $1,000 for the body ($1,400 with kit lens), is this compact, mirrorless interchangeable lens camera worth the premium, or are you paying for cachet? If you've used old Leicas or Japanese rangefinders, then the X-E1's retro-inspired design will feel familiar. Like Fujifilm's other X-Series cameras, the X-E1 is stunning to look at. The design – magnesium die-cast top and bottom plates with analog dials and synthetic leather – harkens back to those wonderful metal film cameras used by street photographers and war reporters. But, once you pick up the body of the X-E1, the weight and feel belies its construction. It's very lightweight and the metal plates have a plastic-like feel.

Fujifilm X-E1 Review

Fujifilm is expanding its range of compacts with large-format sensors with the X-E1. While Fuji's X-Pro1 advanced compact is a practically pro-level camera, this more accessible model has a similar feel to the X100 but with the Fujifilm X lens mount and the internal electronics of its higher-end counterpart. Sounds great! Let's take a closer look. On first contact, the X-E1 feels and handles a lot like the X-Pro1, with the same buttons in more or less the same places. That said, the playback button has been moved to the left of the screen, the button for switching between the optical and electronic viewfinder has been ditched, and a button for popping up the flash has appeared. However, the X-E1 is a fair bit lighter and more compact than the X-Pro1. In fact, it feels more similar in size and weight to the X100, Fujifilm's first compact camera with large-format sensor (and with a fixed lens). It's therefore still a dense-feeling and well-made camera with a stylish retro design, but it's closer in size to other interchangeable lens compacts with viewfinders, with dimensions that bring it closer to the likes of Sony's NEX-7. The X-E1 doesn't have the same screen as the X-Pro1. Here, you get a 2.8" 460,000-dot display, like in Fuji's X10 compact.

Hands on: Fuji X-E1 (Preview)

Buying GuideBest camera accessoriesJust a few months after the Fuji X-Pro1 launch, Fujifilm has managed to squeeze its class-leading tech into a smaller body.Fuji has enjoyed great success with its X series of premium cameras. The Fuji X-Pro1 marked the company's return to interchangeable lens cameras ever since it bowed out of the DSLR market in 2006.Widely praised by critics and the audience, the Fuji X-Pro1's sensor is comparable to some full-frame sensors in our lab tests, and the images it produces are fantastic. But there's always been one huge drawback for the consumer audience - the price. The Fuji X-Pro1 currently stands at around 1,500/$1,700 for the body only, with each of the three prime optics retailing for around 500-600/$600-$700 each.By comparison, Fuji says that the X-E1 will retail for significantly less and will include the brand new premium 18-55 f/2.8 - f/4 Fujinon lens. Another big criticism of the Fuji X-Pro1 was its autofocusing speed, which could be pretty sluggish at times. Fuji was well aware of this issue, and has now issued a firmware upgrade for the X-Pro1, which solves that problem. This version of the firmware is found on the Fuji X-E1.

Fujifilm X-E1 (Preview)

Hm. A cheaper, smaller, and faster version of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 with only a few compromises? I expect it will take some intense testing to figure out where the downside is, but for now I'm trying mightily to silence the voice in the back of my head shouting, "Sign me up!" Based around the same excellent, antialiasing-filter-free sensor and image-processing subsystem as the X-Pro1, the X-E1 replaces that camera's hybrid viewfinder with a high-resolution electronic viewfinder. (See the X-Pro1 review linked above for an explanation of the sensor.) Fujifilm claims that the EVF is bright, with a 1:5,000 contrast ratio and a dynamic range sufficient for you to see differences in its film simulation modes. Aside from that and the smaller, 2.8-inch LCD, the body looks quite similar, with effectively the same control layout and attractive retro design. The company claims it's about 30 percent smaller overall, with magnesium alloy top and bottom panels. The most important improvement should be the new autofocus system. There's an AF motor in the body and the new lenses incorporate a linear motor for faster physical operation, and the combination theoretically delivers much better AF performance.

Fujifilm X-E1 hands-on (Preview)

When Fujifilm launched the X system in January 2012, it did so with an unusually high-end body - the X-Pro1. The result is a compact body that's broadly similar in size to both the much-loved FinePix X100, and its most obvious competitors like the E-M5 and NEX-7. The X-E1 gets a few new features relative to the X-Pro1, commensurate with its class.
