With its manual zoom and a whole series of shortcuts, it's very clearly aimed at a demanding public who want to enjoy a 14x zoom without having to use several lenses or pay extra for a 14-250 mm superzoom: in short, people who don't want or need an SLR. Just like the , from which it has inherited its lens and most of its bodywork, the F200EXR is big, heavy and well-built. A large handle makes sure you'll always have a steady grip, even if you have big hands. There are a few small details we'd take issue with, like the rubber covers over some of the outputs or the screws that are visible all over the case, but in general, the quality is excellent. That makes it even more sad to see that the rotating screen has disappeared. There hasn't even a move to a better resolution to make up for the lost mobility: it's stuck at 230 000 pixels, with a very thick border round the outside; the same is true for the viewfinder, an element that a number of recent cameras like the and have done without. Dotted around the camera body are several buttons giving direct access to various features like sensitivity, exposure correction, and exposure mode, with this last still controlled by a frustrating mode dial. The manual zoom dial is big and comfortable, and works effectively, just like the smaller focus dial. Overall, using the S200EXR is a lot like using an SLR.
It may not be a DSLR, but the FinePix S200EXR ($600 as of 11/13/09) is the sort of advanced point-and-shoot camera that's an enthusiast's dream. With a layout that mimics a typical SLR's design, it offers superb handling, megazoom reach, advanced exposure control, and only a few minor disappointments. The impressive credentials start with a 14.3X, optically stabilized zoom lens (30.5mm to 436mm). A handful of other megazoom cameras offer more reach and wider-angle capabilities, so that isn't the S200EXR's star feature. Instead, direct your attention to the 12-megapixel EXR sensor, first found in the pocketable Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR. In a nutshell, with this sensor the camera can take standard 12-megapixel images, but it can also combine adjacent sensor sites to create 6-megapixel images that have low-light sensitivity with reduced noise, or shoot high dynamic range (HDR) images by using alternating sensor sites to capture shadow and highlight detail. You can leave the camera set to EXR mode--sort of like a superpowered program mode--and let the camera automatically choose the right one (full resolution, high ISO/low noise, or dynamic range). Or, if you prefer, you can manually select which EXR mode to shoot with.
We’re big DSLR boosters because of their fast response and enhanced picture quality. Yet we’re the first to admit that carrying around a hefty DSLR all day with several lenses is a pain. That’s why compact point-and-shoots remain so popular (lower prices certainly help as well). The new FinePix S200EXR tries to carve a path in between the two types of cameras. It offers rapid, aim-and-forget shooting, and its built-in 14.3x manual zoom has a focal range of 30.5-436mm – something that would cost a small fortune if you bought comparable interchangeable DSLR lenses. The 12-megapixel digicam also has loads of tweaks to satisfy shutterbugs at all levels. The camera will set you back around $535, a tidy sum when you have many quality mega-zooms and high-quality point-and-shoots available for less, let alone entry-level DSLRs. Value, as always, is in the eye of the reviewer, so let’s put the S200EXR through its paces. A quick look at the S200EXR and you’d swear you’re looking at a DSLR. It has a large all-black body and large grip. You don’t see the large pentaprism box on the top, since there is no mirror assembly, and neither will you find a lens release button: The protruding lens is yours forever.
