The FinePix HS20EXR is Fujifilm's most advanced ultrazoom this year, distinguished by full manual zoom and focus rings surrounding the lens assembly. We liked the feature-rich HS10, this model's predecessor, but this segment of the market has grown increasingly competitive in recent months. We've seen some strong improvements from Nikon, Canon, and especially Panasonic, whose high-end superzoom performance has skyrocketed. Fujifilm needs to overcome a few lingering image quality problems in order to surpass the stiff competition. Does their superzoom flagship rise to the occasion? We let the tests decide. The HS20EXR offers good color accuracy, achieving an error value of only 2.69 in our test. This will add a flattering, realistic element to all shots, especially those with human subjects. Problem areas, where they do exist, are spread out evenly across the spectrum. Fleshtones, greens, and blues are all darker than they should be, though only slightly. Saturation is also nearly perfect, off by only 1.5%. More on how we test color. Today we’ll be comparing the HS20EXR to three very similar models: Panasonic’s Lumix FZ150, recently crowned king of the superzooms, Canon’s PowerShot SX40 HS, another powerful model, and Fujifilm’s own HS10, the nearly-identical camera preceding the HS20EXR The HS20’s color scores are the best of them, although by a slim margin.
The Fujifilm HS20 EXR is a 16 Megapixel super-zoom with a 30x stabilised lens and a 3in articulated flip-up LCD screen. Launched in January 2011, the FinePix HS20 EXR replaces the HS10. A brand new back-illuminated CMOS EXR sensor increases the resolution from 10 to 16 Megapixels and the resolution of the screen is also doubled from 230k to 460k pixels. The HS20 EXR retains the 1080p30 best quality video mode of its predecessor, but the new sensor and EXR processing engine add a variety of new scene and composite modes, faster autofocussing, a wider range of burst shooting options and expanded scene recognition. The FinePix HS20 EXR has a number of features that differentiate it from the super-zoom competition. Fujifilm has a long history of sensor innovation and the EXR sensor in the FinePix HS20 has an unconventional 45 degree photosite orientation which it's claimed improves the sensor's light-gathering capabilities. More conventionally, its a CMOS sensor with a back-illuminated structure - the wiring is on the back of the chip which means more light reaches the photosites resulting in improved noise performance.
Nudging the lower end of the DSLR market in terms of price (£315), design and features offered, the Fujifilm Finepix HS20EXR is a superzoom with plenty of ambition. But is it a bridge too far? We put it to the test. If you want a camera that looks, feels and costs the same as a DSLR but isn't actually a DSLR, then the Fujifilm Finepix HS20EXR could be the camera for you. It’s a superzoom or 'bridge' camera that's built around an EXR CMOS sensor, which -- at half an inch -- is slightly bigger than that found in the average compact camera but smaller than those you would find in a DSLR. The sensor's resolution is 16 megapixels, up from the 10-megapixel sensor that came in the HS20EXR's predecessor, last year's HS10. It's a bulky device, weighing 730g with batteries and SD memory card on board, so it's aimed at serious photographers rather than casual point-and-shooters. The moulded plastic design has a rugged feel and the grip is satisfyingly sturdy to hold. There are plenty of dedicated dials and buttons to play with too, though this might make the HS20EXR a little off-putting for inexperienced users. Colours are rich and detail is pretty good but you can see evidence of picture noise even at low ISO settings and there’s some purple fringing going on too (click image to enlarge).
Fuji HS20 review: OverviewThe new FinePix HS20 enters the super zoom market as a replacement for the once popular HS10. Sporting a handful of similar attributes to the HS10, including manual and semi-manual shooting modes, the HS20 is aimed at those who desire a camera with heighted technology that can produce the same picture quality of a DSLR in a trimmed down body, all at a more affordable price tag. Retailing at £430 however, the HS20 could cost consumers more than some entry-level DSLRs, but with a bumper selection of advanced specs on offer perhaps the new Fujifilm could make a more enticing buy for amateur enthusiasts not ready to up the ante to the DSLR platform. In many respects avid camera-lovers may not notice a great deal of difference between the new HS20 and its predecessor at first; especially as both units boast the same: 30x zoom offering an impressive focal range of 24mm wide angle to 720mm telephoto, external aesthetics, free angle LCD, full 1080 HD movie recording mode, motion panorama and power source of AA batteries.Dig a little deeper and we discover a roll-call of features that would make most its swoon: an improved pixel count of 16 million, extended dynamic range of up to 1600%, 27 scene modes, a Photobook Assist function, supports TTL flash, is SDXC compatible, offers film simulation effects and an improved 360 degree Motion Panorama mode, boasts the inclusion of a new EXR processing engine and delivers high speed continuous shooting providing full resolution images at 8 frames per second and 11 frames per second at 8MP.
The Fujifilm FinePix HS20 EXR updates the current HS10 model and is an eagerly-anticipated and much-hyped release. Superzoom cameras have always done a good job of delivering a significant zoom range in an affordable package - far more focal range for far less money than a DSLR purchase using the same wad of cash would ever muster. And the market's been delivering some stormers of late: Last year we were impressed by the Fujifilm FinePix HS10's unique 24-720mm manual zoom lens. Since then there's been the Canon SX30 IS and announcement of the Sony HX100V. It's fair to say the competition's more than hotting up nicely. But is the Fuji HS20 a step in the right direction; a new dawn for superzooms that can keep the hot-on-the-heels competition at bay? The What Digital Camera Fujifilm FinePix HS20 EXR review takes a look...The HS20's 30x optical zoom lens (24-720mm equivalent) is, without doubt, the foremost and best feature on offer. What makes it special is that, like the HS10, the lens has a manual zoom that's far quicker and more accurate to use than the fiddly zoom toggle methods used by the competition. An f/2.8-5.6 aperture is also impressive when considering just how substantial the zoom's top-end reach is too.
With the new FinePix HS20 EXR bridge camera, Fujifilm is swimming against a swelling tide of manufacturers who have done away with the manual zoom. On paper, the HS20 looks like a very interesting camera, with plenty of functions and a decent set of tech specs, including a 30x wide-angle optical zoom lens, a vertical-tilt screen, a 1080 HD video mode and a flash hot-shoe. All in all, Fujifilm's new bridge has more than a few tricks up its sleeve to please advanced users—let's just hope that picture quality is up to scratch. In spite of its rather improbable 30x zoom lens (24-720 mm), the Fujifilm HS20 is actually a relatively compact bridge camera. Obviously, it's not going to fit into your jacket pocket though, and you will need a small case or bag to carry it around in. The HS20 is a pleasant camera to use. It has a nice big handle for effective grip and the camera's textured covering makes it nice to hold. The various controls (dials, buttons, on/off switch) are easily accessible and are generally well finished. The only slight let-down is the rubber cover for the connection ports, which looks a little flimsy.
