Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Fujifilm has updated its superzoom compacts with the FinePix F770 EXR (with GPS) and F750 EXR (without GPS). As ever, these two cameras use Fuji-made sensors—a 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS like last year's models, in fact—but 2012 sees the arrival of a 20x (25-500 mm) lens and a few minor tweaks to the camera body. Fuji's flagship compact evolves in very small steps. Compared with last year's F600 EXR, the pop-up flash has been slightly reworked, with a mechanism that pushes it a little further forwards, and there's a new Fn button next to the shutter release. This can be assigned various functions (direct access to ISO settings, RAW mode, dynamic range, picture styles, autofocus mode and a landmark navigator). The F770 EXR is a well-made camera, with decent build quality, pleasant materials and comfortable grip. The settings wheel around the four-way controller is still a bit too loose for our liking, however. The F770 uses the same screen as the F600—a 3-inch display with 460,000 dots that's pleasant to use but which doesn't reproduce accurate colours. It also tends to wash out light greys to white. Otherwise, the camera has the usual Fuji interface.

Fujifilm FinePix F770EXR Review

The Fujifilm FinePix F770EXR advances off of last year's F-series models and features an updated 1/2-inch 16 megapixel EXT-CMOS sensor, GPS photo tracking and landmark navigation, and motion detection technology. Fujifilm has been gaining steam as a contender in the digital camera world. Names like Nikon and Canon have enjoyed elevated status for their diverse lineups for years. More recently, Olympus has been thrown into that mix as well, primarily for its more sophisticated models. But Fujifilm quietly snuck into this club with its X Series line of very professional, very impressive, very expensive cameras. On the way there, Fujifilm has been refining its point-and-shoot lineup as well, and now it has something to show off in the pocket-cam category .The FinePix F770EXR sits at the top of Fujifilm's F Series, which represents a compromise between the pro-grade features of the spendy X Series and the more compact size of the Z or T series. While the F770 is an all-around capable camera, it struggles to make up for a frustrating UI with extra features like GPS and its 20x zoom. With a price tag well over $300 even on Amazon, it also has to compete with other high-end point and shoots like Canon's respected S100.

Fuji FinePix F770EXR

Building off the F-series from last year, the Fuji FinePix F770EXR is a new addition that leads this pack, offering GPS photo tracking and a newly updated 1/2-inch 16-megapixel EXR-CMOS sensor. This travel zoom uses a FUJINON 20x wide angle zoom lens, a 3-inch high-res LCD screen, and a host of advanced features that really fill out this tight little package. Fuji let us know that this year's model has a faster autofocus, better motion detection, an intelligent digital zoom, 3D photographs, and GPS landmark navigation. Some of these features we were able to judge while at CES, others we will have to put through our regular battery of testing to deem them truly worthy. The F770EXR will be available in March 2012 in both black and red for an MSRP of $379.95. It looks like they sent this new F-Series camera to yoga class, because it’s got some really appealing curves this year. Rather than the hard rectangle look, this suave new design seems to be shaped around the lens and the actual shape of the human hand. There is an excellent middle finger grip on the front that fits like a glove. On the back, a bump and some rubber studs hit the thumb perfectly for some excellent one-handed shooting.
