Cisco Flip UltraHD (2-hour/8GB)

Cisco recently announced the discontinuation of its Flip pocket camcorders, but the current generation of Flip camcorders is still available through the company's site while supplies last. You can read Cisco's official announcement regarding product support here. If you're looking for a no-nonsense pocket camcorder, Cisco's latest (and last) version of the Flip UltraHD is small and simple enough to justify its $180 (as of April 15, 2011) price tag. What the new 2-hour Flip UltraHD lacks in features, it makes up for in pure, elegant simplicity. The camcorder offers some slight improvements over its predecessor: It's thinner and less bulky--with a thickness of 0.88 inch versus the old Flip UltraHD's 1.16 inches--but still a bit too chunky to slip comfortably into any but the biggest of pockets. The 2-hour/8GB model we examined sports a couple of major additions that the 1-hour version of the same camcorder lacks: a special FlipPort, which you can use to connect optional proprietary accessories such as an external microphone; and 720p HD video recording at a higher frame rate of 60 frames per second, up from the previous version’s 30 fps.

New Flip Video UltraHD review

The Flip Video camcorder is all about ease and portability. The business model that its creators have taken with its development closely mirrors the method of refinement that Apple has long used to evolve its products. Each year there's a new Flip camera out, and it's always slightly better than last year's model. It's a good way of consistently improving a product, while also sticking to the mantra: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.This year's new Flip Ultra HD comes again packing 8GB of internal memory and has just a couple of features that distinguish it from last year's model.Firstly, the frame rate has been upped to 50 frames per second. This makes your videos a lot smoother when it comes to filming moving objects, and also when panning. The second new feature is the inclusion of image stabilisation.Because these candybar-style camcorders are designed to be held like mobile phones, footage can often be quite shaky depending on how steady your hand is, how much wind there is and so on.Digital image stabilisation smooths over shakes and wobbles during recording by using pixels outside of the frame as a buffer.

Flip UltraHD (Third Generation) Review

We review the third-generation Flip UltraHD, which is the most flexible model yet in Flip's lineup, but how does it hold up when compared to competitors? As with all pocket camcorders, Flip video quality suffers when compared to full-sized models, a result mostly of lower-cost image processing chips, cheap lenses and footage that shakes like a bridegroom hearing the wedding march - the result of ineffective image stabilization. Flip has tried to address both the quality and jitter problems with its latest UltraHD, the UltraHD 3, but has both succeeded and failed in improving the world's bestselling camcorder.Basically, all the UltraHD 3 does is shoot 1280 x 720p video at 60 fps (the 1-hour version captures video at 30 fps like the UltraHD 2), with footage stored internally. There are no picture-taking capabilities, no special effects, no SD card expansion. Literally, just point, shoot, then flip out the USB jack (hence its name) to transfer the footage using the embedded FlipShare software.Other than being around 25 percent thinner, the new UltraHD 3 is nearly identical to the old. The biggest difference is the shiny plastic sides.

Cisco Flip UltraHD 8GB 2 Hours (2010)

When Apple announced that its latest iPod touch ($229.99, ) included HD video recording, my initial thought was that every product in the burgeoning pocket camcorder space was toast. At first glance, the HD video captured by the iPod looks good, plus you get a top-notch portable media player that runs thousands of apps in the bargain. What's not to like? Then I saw the new Cisco Flip UltraHD 8GB ($199.99 direct), the latest-gen Flip pocket video camera. This dedicated device offers better-looking video and incredibly simple controls. If you want a killer MP3 player, get an iPod touch, but if your focus is firmly on video capture and ease of use, the Flip UltraHD is probably a better choice. The new-generation Flip UltraHD 8GB retains the name of its predecessor ($199.99, ), but gets three upgrades. Image quality has been improved; instead of capturing 720p HD video at 30 frames per second, Flip has doubled it to 60fps, so video motion looks smoother. Second, no more AA batteries; the UltraHD now includes a removable, rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The last addition is the FlipPort accessories port (more on that in a moment).

Pure Digital Flip UltraHD Camcorder Review

Years and years ago, I remember when my dad bought our family’s first camcorder. It was quite the premium product at the time, especially since we opted for the Sony Handycam. After taxes, an extra battery, and a couple of tapes, we racked up a bill of about $1,000. Thankfully, recording video on the fly is a lot more affordable and a lot more pocket-friendly these days. Pure Digital introduced the world to affordable and simple movie-making with the first Flip Ultra and now they have expanded the line substantially. One of the newest additions to the line is the Flip UltraHD. As its name implies, you get (720p) HD video out of this pocket-sized camcorder. This isn’t the first HD camcorder to come out of Pure Digital, as you may already know. They introduced the Flip MinoHD some time ago and it was great that you could get HD-quality video out of something that small. Unfortunately, the screen was a little too small and the memory topped out at one hour. With the Flip UltraHD, you get the slightly larger form factor of the original Flip Ultra, but many of the specs have been bumped. For starters, you get a bigger 2.0? display.
