Flip video cameras helped give birth to the booming pocket camcorder market, but in a world dominated by YouTube and Facebook, they're being challenged from every angle: iPods, digital cameras, cell phones, and other direct competitors who create pocket-size devices that shoot simple, Web-ready video and upload it in an instant. In response, Cisco is sticking to what it does best with its Flip cameras - providing ease-of-use along with high-quality video. This year's Flip MinoHD 8GB 2 Hour ($229 direct) is a slim, sleek number that is a snap to use and takes great video, and has gotten a couple of nice upgrades from last year - a higher frame rate, image stabilization, and even simpler software. The only problem: Its stiffest competition, is its chunkier, less-expensive sibling, the Flip UltraHD ($149-$199, 3.5 stars), which includes the same easy onboard software and provides the same good-quality video but for $30 less for the same 8GB capacity. If you're obsessed with aesthetics, the MinoHD might be for you, but for everyone else, the UltraHD is a better choice. Nearly all of the differences between the MinoHD and the UltraHD are cosmetic.
We've already seen what Creative is doing with its 3rd generation Vado HD and now the Flip pocket camcorder is getting it's latest incarnation in the new Flip MinoHD 8GB edition. It's not just a larger capacity than we've seen in the MinoHD's of the past but it's also much heavier and with a better screen. We're starting to see the pocket camcorders making real names for themselves, but can this Flip get one over on Creative's latest? The first thing to notice when you compare the two devices is the MinoHD is a far chunkier beast. Not only is it heavier than the Vado HD, it's also got a bit on it in terms of girth too. Styling wise it's on to a bit of a downer too, looking as it does, like a mid-noughties, small-time Chinese branded .mp3 player. Like the Vado HD it's got a big red record button in the middle, but again like the Vado HD it's also surrounded by fiddly touch-buttons including an all too prominent delete button. Luckily there's a delete lock you can activate but you can't help feeling like that was a reaction to the simple fact that it's so easy to press by accident. Click to see this video in 720p HDWe liked: The screen is the saviour of the MinoHD, it's got half an inch on its 4GB brethren and the screen is a picture of clarity.
Our first impressions were excellent: before we even got our hands on it, we were very impressed by the well-designed packaging that could easily hold some flashy jewellery rather than a pocket camcorder. And it really isn't that far off: the version we tested came in a sleek black case every bit as shiny as Darth Vador's helmet. Even the silver lanyard contributes to the quality feel, and for less than £200, the Flip really doesn't skimp on its design, especially given that it's as small and light as a mobile phone. The same case is also available in white and chrome. The MinoHD's other main strength is that it's extremely easy to use. The whole point of a pocket camcorder is that it's relatively simple, of course but all the MinoHD has is a power switch, a record button and three buttons to control playback of your videos. And although it might look like it uses a touchscreen, the buttons are real enough, but only require a very gentle tap. Unlike some its competitors in the same price bracket, the MinoHD doesn't have a menu to adjust the settings.
In case you missed Apple's fall iPod announcements, Apple and Flip Video (now owned by Cisco) are at war. After Steve Jobs treaded into Flip territory by adding a camera to the iPod Nano and implied that it eliminated the need to buy a separate device, Flip headed back to the drawing boards determined the prove that an MP3 player can't upend the established leader of the up-and-coming mini HD camcorder market. The resulting second-generation Mino HD, introduced a month after the new Nano, adds a bigger screen, more memory, and a more polished design. Will it be enough to fend off a cheaper, smaller device from the likes of Apple? Will it even justify an upgrade from the old version? Let's find out. From the outside, not much has changed from Flip to Flip, save for a handful of minor aesthetic refinements. The company has always offered the Mino HD in customizable cases, allowing you to get it skinned in anything from a psychedelic rainbow print to a picture of your dog, but as part of its newfound appeal to Apple fans, the new Mino HD includes one extra option: anodized aluminum. The bright, silky-feeling finish might have been cast directly from a pile of melted down MacBook Pros, which is great as far as we're concerned.
