Most people don't have a spare room in their house to dedicate to a home theater, but with the Epson MovieMate 60 ($699.99 direct), you don't need one. Instead, you can have your home theater and keep the room for other purposes too. Like the Epson MovieMate 72 ($1,099.99 direct, ), that I reviewed a while back, the MovieMate 60 is an instant home theater. There have never been many such products available; the MovieMate 72 is the only other one we've reviewed that's still current, and the two aren't in direct competition in any case, since they offer different resolutions - at 720p HD for the MovieMate 72 and only 540p for the MovieMate 60. What defines them as instant home theaters is that they combine a projector, DVD player, and stereo sound system (including speakers) into a single unit - a shiny black box that's compact enough to store neatly away when you don't need it, and designed for fast and easy setup when you do. At just 9.3 pounds, the MovieMate 60 weighs less than some laptops, and it's far smaller than a classic boom box, at 5 by 13.4 by 9.3 inches (HWD). It includes a handle that swings out to one side so you can carry it easily - whether from room to room or to a friend's house for a night of movies or game playing - and it comes with a soft case to protect it when you're carrying it or storing it away.
