    Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8100

Inexpensive 1080p home theater projectors, aimed at people who want to watch full HD video on a large screen for a budget price, aren't news anymore. However, most of the truly inexpensive models ($1,000 to $1,500 in this context) are built around a technology (DLP) that's arguably the wrong choice for movie-length sessions on a regular basis. The problem is that DLP projectors can produce visual artifacts that some people find annoying. The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8100 ($1,499 direct) has the advantage of being built around a different technology (LCD) that simply doesn't have that problem. Even if the 8100 had nothing else going for it, this distinction would make it a welcome alternative. Add in the projector's other strengths, and it's a strong contender by any measure, earning the nod as Editors' Choice for budget home theater projectors. Before any DLP fans get up in arms, I should add that each technology has some advantages over the other. Choosing between them depends largely on which advantages you prefer, or, more likely, which disadvantages bother you more. Arguably the most important advantage for DLP projectors today is that more and more of them are offering support for 3D, a feature you won't find on the 8100 or any other LCD projectors yet.

Epson Home Cinema 8100 Projector Review

I received a pre-production Epson Home Cinema 8100 late September for review. As a pre-production unit we expect to find minor issues that will be corrected by the time full production projectors ship at the end of the this month (October.) The Home Cinema 8100 is Epson's lowest cost, "entry level" 1080p home theater projector. This Home Cinema 8100 review has just been posted, and is rough, not all images have been replaced. Will be finished and cleaned up by Oct 9. The first thing to point out about Epson's new Home Cinema 8100 which is due to start shipping in the US, in late October, is that it is what we call around here, an "evolutionary" model. The Home Cinema 8100 is, in most ways, essentially identical to the Home Cinema 6100 it is replacing. Certainly it is physically, virtually identical (are the side panels a slightly different color) to the older model. While there are no major breakthroughs - new features, or significant new levels of performance, the Home Cinema 8100 has a couple of distinct advantages over the 6100. First, of note, Epson announced a doubling of contrast from 18,000:1, to 36,000:1.
