Creative’s ZiiSound D5 promises to deliver the convenience of wireless audio without committing the sin of sonic compromise, and it comes pretty darned close. If that surprises you, you’ll be doubly amazed to learn that it accomplishes this feat using Bluetooth. The ZiiSound D5 is a sound-bar type stereo speaker with an iPod docking port, a Bluetooth receiver, and a Bluetooth dongle that can be plugged into most any model iPhone, iPad, or iPod (except the Shuffle). If you’d prefer to stream from a computer, Creative sells a $39 Bluetooth USB dongle separately. And if you have another brand of media player—one built by Creative, perhaps—there’s a 1/8-inch auxiliary input in the back of the cabinet. The ZiiSound D5 is elegantly designed--you could almost call it a cubed Zeppelin. We’ve reviewed Bluetooth sound systems before and haven’t been impressed. The ZiiSound D5 is different. One of the key ingredients in Creative’s secret sauce is the third-party audio codec known as Apt-X Bluetooth. Apt-X encodes audio with 16-bit resolution at a 44.1kHz sampling rate (the same as an audio CD), and then compresses it at a 4:1 ratio for wireless streaming over a Bluetooth connection.
Creative Technology's ZiiSound D5 takes a new look at the iPod speaker set. Instead of plugging your device directly into a dock, it comes supplied with a Bluetooth transmitter that fits any Apple device with a dock connector, enabling you to wirelessly transmit your sounds up to 10 metres. With your iPhone, iPod or iPad in your hand instead of your speaker dock, you have much more control over your music than a standard speaker remote could afford. You can also pair the D5 with your Mac (or just about any Bluetooth-enabled device), and there's a 3.5mm aux-in port for connecting non-Bluetooth audio players. Your iPod or iPhone can also be docked in the unit for charging. The Creative ZiiSound D5 is very stylish, boasting a sleek, black exterior unencumbered by messy controls. Even the volume is set using a touch-sensitive slider. It offers excellent sound too, with a rear-facing bass port boosting the lower end and twin 2.75-inch full frequency drivers giving a rich, detailed audio that's full of character. The Bluetooth connection never lets you down, and it has enough volume to fill a decent-sized room without significant distortion. It's not quite as good at shaping the sound, however.
The good: Speaker bar with integrated Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming; compact design ideal for shelf placement; optimized Bluetooth dongle included for iPods and iPhone. The bad: Cloth covering is susceptible to fraying; fairly pricey. The bottom line: Though the price of the Creative ZiiSound D5 Bluetooth speaker is a bit steep, its simple, attractive design and decent sound make it recommendable. Review: As the iPhone-iPod audio docking systems move into a more mature phase, Creative is hitching its wagon to Bluetooth in a bid differentiate itself in this crowded category. Bluetooth compatibility allows the wide range of A2DP devices--which includes iPhones, iPads, recent iPod Touch models, most recent smartphones, and many PCs--to stream audio wirelessly to the speaker. On the PC speaker side, Creative has the $150 Inspire S2 Bluetooth system, and now the company has bulked up its audio line with several Bluetooth-enabled iPod speaker options, including the ZiiSound D5, a higher-end model that retails for $300. The nice thing about ... Bluetooth wireless audio is notorious for its defects: the splashy, distorted sound of low bit-rate files and the sputtering that comes with an interrupted signal. Creative continues to dodge these pitfalls, however, first with its Inspire S2 Wireless PC speakers ($149.99 direct, ), and now with the ZiiSound D5. At $299.99 (direct), this slick iPod/iPhone dock suffers more from an almost-too-high price and speaker limitations than it does Bluetooth defects. At 30 feet away you'll hear some sputtering, but within a reasonable range, audio sounds clean, with quality bass response and clear high frequencies, but at high volumes on songs with deep bass, you do get some distortion. Measuring 3.5 by 16.7 by 4.3 inches (HWD), the 8.4-pound ZiiSound D5 is long, thin, and elegant looking. Its sparse, primarily black design features a glossy black plastic strip that separates the left and right sides of the cloth speaker grilles, which cover most of the dock. Along the plastic strip, are backlit touch controls for pairing your device with the speakers, and also for controlling volume. Two chrome side panels provide attractive accents. The back panel houses the power adapter jack, Aux input (which is the only way to bypass Bluetooth on the dock), and a Power button, as well as a port to move air and help with bass response.
