In December 2010, Alex Baker and Chris Rose sent a weather balloon into near space. This film documents the process from building to ascent to recovery. Follow Chris and Alex on twitter at @chris_rose_85 For a panorama at the top of the flight, see www.flickr.com FAQ: - What equipment? Here's a kit list for our build. Compact camera pointing downwards (Sony cybershot DSC-T30) - (quality of video footage from this was ok but not spectacular - not included footage in film - would recommend using a different camera). HD video camera pointing sideways (Creative Vado HD - worked well, memory ran out after 2hrs) CATtrack gps tracker, from Mr Lee Kaymont 1200g Sounding balloon, 30" parachute Tape String Helium Small heat pad (outdoor activity hand warmer) - How much do you fill the balloon? You can find data on the balloons on the Kaymont website. - What about the parachute? As the balloon goes up the pressure drops and the balloon expands, ultimately bursting. The parachute was attached in its center to the balloon, and at its edges to the payload, so that on its way up, the balloon pulled it tight, but once the balloon burst the parachute was free to open up. - How do you predict where it will land? This website uses wind data to predict where the balloon will land - for us it got within about 10 miles: habhub.org - What about the legal stuff? For info on the legality of unmanned balloon flight over the UK, see the UK High Altitude Society FAQ ukhas.org.uk - What's the music ...

Unboxing my Alienware M17x SPECS: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 4gb DDR3 1066 MHz RAM 1TB RAID 0 1x nVidia GeForce GTX 260M Blu-Ray slot loaded optical drive 1920 x 1200 WUXGA screen 3 year warranty Approx. $3070 total (including tax and fees) Just graduated college and am still poor, so I couldn't get all the highest specs, but since I'm primarily a console gamer, it should do. Common questions: Q: How long did it take to get your M17x? A: Approximately 3 weeks. Dell predicted it would take 4 weeks because the WUXGA 1980x1200 screen was on backorder, though it came one week earlier than that. Q: What does the ship date mean? A: As far as I can tell, that is when the M17x will leave Dell to be shipped to you. I don't think this is the predicted arrival date of your M17x. Q: How is it? A: It's great! I did run into some problems when upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, though almost all of those issues disappeared when I did a clean install of Windows 7. Other than that, it plays games amazingly, and it is beautiful of course. When you bring it to a cafe and everyone has their Macbook Pros, it feels like having a Ferrari in a room full of Mercedes. More powerful and sexier :D Q: Why do I need such a powerful laptop? A: Gaming of course. On top of that, I'm an engineer, so I do a lot of 3D modeling and number crunching. Also good for HD video editing (just got my hands on a Creative Vado HD).

That tonight's gonna be a good night That tonight's gonna be a good night That tonight's gonna be a good good night Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, let's do it Let's do it, let's do it, let's live it up Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it again (The Heyday - "Come in or Stay Out") Yeah you say that you're never coming back, but I know that I'll see you around real soon (I know I messed up this part) Yeah you say that you're never coming back, but we both know that's nothing but a lie (Katy Perry - "Hot 'N' Cold") you're hot and you're cold You're yes and you're no You're in and you're out You're up and you're down You're wrong when it's right You're black and it's white We fight, we break up We hug, we make up (messed up this part too) (Brian Mueller - "2200 miles") I get butterflies thinkin' about when I get to see you And I need the way you look at me And I miss your laugh and I miss your eyes, I wish you were here with me tonight This is how I'll reply (Shinedown - "Sound of Madness") I created the sound of madness, wrote the book on pain Somehow I'm still here to explain That the darkest hour never comes in the night You can sleep with a gun Mics: AKG Perception 200, Shure SM57, Audix i5 ...

This was filmed with a Vado HD held right next to a Sony Webbie PM1. The colors are different (Vado a bit amped - Sony a bit washed out). The zoom is different (Vado has wide angle and 2x zoom - Sony has normal lens with 4x zoom) The file format is different (Vado records in larger AVI files - Sony in smaller MP4 files) Vado comes with 8GB on-board and no additional memory slot - Sony comes with no memory on board but has a MemoryStick slot. The Sony also features swivel lens, takes 5MP pictures and can also be used as a usb web-camera when connected to a PC. - On the other hand - the sizes of the devices are about the same, they BOTH use custom, rechargeable and removable batteries and NEITHER has optical zoom or image stabilization of any kind. They BOTH perform poorly in low light conditions and NEITHER has alternative white-balance settings. Sony's mic is more sensitive than Vado's which is good, but it also records a lot of "background noise" and wind. Both are great pocket "HD"-like camcorders, imo better than the Flip Mino HD due to its built-in and non-removable battery, smaller screen size, and its smaller (4GB/1hr) on-board and non-expandable memory ! .. Although many may object to this comment .. Flip imo Flopped !! .. pun intended :) While the Flip Ultra has a higher-capacity memory it is just too bulky and the Kodak Zi6 with its AAs (a plus for some) is just too large in comparison, but at least it has a bigger screen. Overall I prefer the Vado for its ...

To be clear, this is not a true HD video camcorder--you can only expect so much from a low-resolution sensor and a tiny no-zoom lens" "the key is that you can view videos at full screen size on your computer and they remain relatively sharp. Creative seems to bump up the contrast, saturation, and sharpness so the video makes a better first impression" Music: pSyk - Can't Buy Class
