Creative Vado HD 3rd Gen review

The new Vado HD is the third iteration of Creative's innovative pocket camcorder series. We've previously seen the original Vado, and last year we reviewed the original Vado HD.The mini, mobile phone-sized camcorder has been with us for around four years now but has never been all that popular.While it was great to have something the size of a mobile phone that you could take around with you to record incredibly low resolution video of your friends being sick outside kebab shops, you could increasingly get to do that on any modern mobile phone.What's more many digital cameras had a fairly usable video function bundled in to them as well, and while still low res they at least had the benefit of generally having better quality lenses than either the pocket camcorder or phone. So why blow your cash on a pocket camcorder?With the advent of the HD pocket cams though things have got far more interesting. While they are still the size of a mobile phone the technology is suddenly much better allowing the pocket cams to overtake the average mobile phone in terms of resolution and clarity.Representing the third generation of it's HD pocket cam is Creative's Vado HD and it's an impressive little bundle. Creative Vado HD (3rd Generation) Review

We review the pint-sized 3rd generation Creative Vado HD mini-camcorder and put it to the test against some strong competition. Creative’s first-generation Vado HD may have fallen off the horse the first time we threw it in the ring in our mini HD camcorder roundup, but Creative has dusted the little guy off and come back for more. The new third-generation Vado HD departs from the first and second generations with a sleek new design, additional features like external microphone support and improved low-light recording, while oddly dropping in storage from 8GB to 4GB. Do these tweaks and a lower $180 justify snagging one over the likes of its many competitors? Let’s find out.At 3.9 inches tall, 2.2 wide and 0.6 thick, the deck-of-cards-sized Vado HD hasn’t changed dimensions a bit for its third generation, but it has dropped a sliver of weight from 100 grams down to just 93. As far as mini HD camcorders go, this one really is a featherweight.The design has been rounded off even more than previous versions, and dressed in a glossy checker pattern that feels a bit feminine – especially combined with violet, turquoise, bright red and black as color choices. Although the all-plastic Vado HD doesn’t exude the quality of say, the alumimum-clad Flip MinoHD, it does feel generally well put together.

Creative Vado HD (Third Generation)

For $180 (as of February 16, 2010), the third entry in Creative Labs' Vado HD pocket camcorder series offers enough features and video quality to compete squarely with the Flip Video Mino HD and the Kodak Zi8. In fact, the Creative Vado HD splits the difference between those two top-rated pocket camcorders, offering top-notch 720p footage in low light (like the Flip Mino HD) while sporting an external mic port and versatile in-camera settings (like the Kodak Zi8). The Vado HD also has a wider-angle lens than those two chart-topping camcorders, as well as a pair of features I haven't seen in any pocket camcorder: exposure controls (you can ratchet up the brightness of your footage while filming, using a four-step EV adjuster), and a motion-detection mode that automatically starts recording when the camcorder senses movement in front of the lens. The exposure adjustments are handy when you're dealing with low-light settings or other tricky shooting environments. In the following test clip, I adjusted the exposure values from dark to light (and back again) a few times to show the range of video brightness you can accomplish. Another nice touch is the microphone-in jack, which lets you use standard earbuds as a microphone.

Creative Labs Vado HD 3rd Gen

Creative Labs found a niche in the quickly growing pocket camcorder space by bringing out models that cost less than its competitors but offering many of the same features. To a degree, the same holds true for its latest model, which Creative simply calls the Vado HD 3rd Gen. This model offers 720p HD resolution, 4GB of built-in memory, and an HDMI output, in a compact, stylish package that weighs a mere 3.3 ounces. It lists for $179, significantly less than the second-generation Flip Video MinoHD and about the same as the rival Kodak Zi8, which requires you to purchase an additional memory card because it lacks any real internal memory. Your color choices are white, purple, black, blue (cyan), and red. Though attractive, the Vado 3rd Gen doesn't feel quite as durable as the heavier Kodak Zi8 or the metal-bodied second-generation Flip MinoHD, and since it has a shiny finish, it does seem prone to scratches. As is typical of this class of camcorders, the design is fairly basic: the operating side features a large 2-inch LCD (640x240 pixels) with only a single record button flanked by capacitive touch buttons that are quite responsive.
