The Casio Exilim EX-S200 is an entry-level pocket camera with a couple surprises under the hood. It’s easy to use—most of the time—and some aspects of its performance are surprisingly strong. There aren’t a lot of exciting features, but one or two might intrigue beginning users. For the money, you could certainly do worse. The S200 is available in pink, orange, blue, black, or silver for an MSRP of $159.99. If you’re looking for accurate color reproduction in your photos, the Casio Exilim EX-S200 will not deliver. As you might expect from an inexpensive pocket camera, colors are heavily oversaturated, with a color error of 4.53 and saturation of over 118%. Those are not good scores—even for a point-and-shoot camera. More on how we test color. Of course, many consumers prefer vivid, larger-than-life colors. If you’re reading this review, you might very well be among them… and you might very well prefer the oversaturated colors of the S200. Our complaint is that the camera has no alternative color modes, nor any method of adjusting color. Short of making post-production edits in Photoshop, you’re stuck with the camera’s blatant disregard for color accuracy.
The EX-S200 represents Casio's latest attempt at an ultra-sleek camera. And compact it is, in fact the dimensions are comparable to many phones, and the EX-S200 is only slightly thicker. It's a pretty looking camera, with brushed aluminium adding a sophisticated air, while a chrome trim around two sides, with a generous dash of it, around the lens livening things up. Despite the flimsy look, owing to a metal exterior and its compact dimensions, the camera feels reasonably sturdy, although the rather large LCD means you wouldn't want to drop it. The lens hardly protrudes when off, making carrying this camera around in ones pocket very possible. The camera is also lightweight (there are heavier cell-phones around), and with a tiny, 600 mAh Lithium-ion battery, the EX-S200 weighs a mere 132 grams. Casio unveils EX-S200 & EX-Z800 digital cameras with 14MP super resolution technology Nikon introduces Coolpix S1100pj 14MP projector cam and S5100 12MP digicam LG decides to change the game, introduces a digital camera with 3G and telephony Samsung NX100 Micro Four Thirds camera finally ships, with its full size APS-C sensor The lens is a tiny affair, but at 27mm, it's wider than most compact cameras that feature start at 28mm.
The 14-megapixel Casio Exilim EX-S200 comes with a small build and a small price tag ($179 list), and it produces good-looking photos. The camera won't wow you with an elegant user interface or top-notch HD video capture, but if you're just looking for an inexpensive and simple-to-use compact point and shoot, the EX-S200 won't let you down. Just keep in mind that if you're willing to move up to the $200 mark, there are a handful of small cameras that can deliver much better video performance, like the Sony Cyber-shot W350 ($199.99, 3.5 stars). Part of the thin and slick-looking Casio Exilim Card line, the EX-S200 measures 2.2 by 3.9 by 0.7 inches (HWD), and weighs just 4.5 ounces. It's about inch shorter than a Motorola Droid, with about the same weight, depth, and pocketability of a smartphone. My review unit was navy blue with gunmetal gray accents and buttons, though Casio also offers the EX-S200 in pink, gray, orange, and black. The EX-S200 has a very sleek look and feel; buttons on the back rest flush with the camera and the design is clean. The 2.7-inch LCD is protected by a bezel that is also flush with the body.
