Review Summary: Canon's entry-level long-zoom digicam offers a lot of capability at a great price. If you can afford about $40 more, you can get better image quality and performance with other models, but for the price, the Canon SX150 IS is a winner. (And if you can catch it at the discounted price of $149 we've seen here and there, it's a screaming good deal.) Pros: Optically-stabilized 12x zoom lens, large 3" LCD screen, full PASM exposure control, super-close macro shooting, 1280x720p HD video recording, low price. Cons: Slow performance, poor battery life (good with NiMH rechargeables, though), no HDMI output to connect to HDTV. Price and Availability: The Canon SX150 IS has a list price of US$250 though current street price is around US$179. The SX150 began shipping in the U.S. from September 2011, in black or red. The compact digital camera market is undergoing some serious challenges as the low-end is usurped by smartphones while higher-priced models are taking heat from Compact System Cameras. Yet one digicam neighborhood is flourishing nicely: long-zooms of all types. As we all know, cellphones do not have optical zooms let alone anything like the 12x range of the affordable PowerShot SX150 IS. Now let's determine if this camera is worth even this buyer-friendly cost.
Canon PowerShot SX150 IS Review
The 14.1 megapixel Canon SX150 IS is a superzoom camera with a wide-ranging 12x image-stabilized optical zoom, providing an equivalent focal length range of 28-336mm. Like other advanced Canon compacts, the SX150 is outfitted with a well-rounded feature set that includes manual and semi-manual exposure modes as well as easy-to-use automatic options. Special creative and color effects, including fisheye, toy camera, selective color, black and white or sepia, are among some of the extras offered by this rather chunky little camera. Unlike many of its more recent rivals, the SX150 IS is based around a CCD, rather than CMOS sensor. This means it's missing high-speed features that such a sensor would allow, so video is limited to 1280 x 720 pixels (rather than 1920 x 1080 resolution), and continuous shooting is just 0.9 frames per second (0.6 fps if you want autofocus and live view). Available in black or red, the SX150 IS is fairly chunky compared to Canon's ELPH/IXUS series of cameras, although it's smaller and lighter than its SX40 with its 35x wide-angle zoom. It weighs 306g (10.8 ounces) with batteries and SD/SDHC/SDXC media card installed.
Canon PowerShot SX150 IS
Several of the design, features, and shooting options are identical between the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS and the PowerShot SX130 IS we reviewed, so readers of the earlier review may experience some deja vu when reading the same sections below. Canon does little with the PowerShot SX150 IS to entice owners of its predecessor, the SX130 IS, to trade it in for the refresh. I regularly recommended the SX130 IS due to its use of AA batteries for power, its full manual to full auto shooting modes, and its large comfortable design that still squeezes into a pocket. The SX150 IS doesn't lose any of those features. In fact, it seems to have all the same shooting modes (plus a Discreet mode that shuts off all noises and lights), the same 28mm wide-angle lens with 12x zoom, and the same 3-inch LCD. What's new is an Intelligent IS system that figures out what you're shooting and adjusts the image stabilization accordingly; a one-touch movie record button; and a resolution bump from 12 to 14 megapixels. No good really comes from the increased resolution; it seems you just get more image noise. That said, it still takes very good photos. Like most compact cameras in its class, the SX150 is at its best below ISO 200.
Canon PowerShot SX150 IS review
The Canon PowerShot SX150 is a budget superzoom with a 12x stabilised optical zoom lens, a 14.1 Megapixel CCD sensor and a 3 inch LCD screen. Announced in August 2011 it replaces the PowerShot SX130 IS, adding 2 Megapixels to the sensor resolution, intelligent image stabilisation which adapts to the scene being photographed and minor control layout alterations. As well as Smart Auto and Easy Exposure modes the PowerShot SX150 IS is packed with easy to use features. These include Creative Filter effects, face detect AF and the Smart shutter scene mode. It also has PASM exposure modes so offers the freedom to select your own exposure setting, should you want to. The best quality video mode is 720p30. One of the most attractive things about the PowerShot SX150 IS, though, is it's price. There are plenty of other superzooms that better the SX150 IS specification, the Panasonic ZS8 / TZ18 and Sony HX7V being but two examples, but if you're looking for top-brand superzoom features on a budget the SX150 is a tough act to beat. In view of the fact that its budget price might put it in the reckoning even if you weren't considering a superzoom, we've compared it with two other models in the 2011 Canon line-up, the similarly priced IXUS 220 HS / ELPH 300 HS and the slightly more expensive IXUS 230 HS / ELPH 310 HS. Canon PowerShot SX150 IS review
This is one of the cheapest digital superzooms you can buy. Just £150 will bag you a 12x zoom and a 14.1-megapixel sensor. Add to that a clutch of creative digital filters and a smart auto-shooting mode, and the plain, chunky PowerShot SX150 IS looks very tempting indeed. The PowerShot SX150 IS has much in common features-wise with some far more expensive cameras in Canon's current line-up. As well as the regular auto mode in which we performed the majority of our tests, it has eight scene modes. There is a choice of creative filters, including toy camera, monochrome, colour swap and miniature effect, which mimics the results you'd get from using a tilt-shift lens to make your scene look like a model. The PowerShot SX150 IS shares features in common with more expensive cameras in Canon's range. What it doesn't have is a back-illuminated charge coupled device (CCD) -- the digital camera's equivalent of film that converts light into electrical charges -- that increases the level of low-light captured in night sky photography, for example. Nor does it have the high-sensitivity features rolling out across the upper-end of the range.
Canon PowerShot SX150 IS
The Canon PowerShot SX150 IS ($249.99 direct) is a bit of a conundrum. The fairly large camera is smaller than the 35x zooming PowerShot SX40 HS ($429.99, 4 stars), but dwarfs the PowerShot Elph 510 HS ($349.99, 3.5 stars), a camera with which it shares the same 28-336m (35mm equivalent) 12x zoom lens. The camera's rather modest price point and long zoom range make it look appealing on the surface, but excessive image noise at almost every ISO level hinder the camera's usefulness. In that regard it's not dissimilar to the General Electric X500 ($149.99, 3.5 stars), although that camera produced a little less image noise. Design and Features The SX150 IS measures 2.9 by 4.5 by 1.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 10.8 ounces. It's bulkier than other superzoom cameras with similar focal length ranges, like the Editors' Choice Nikon Coolpix S9100 ($329.95, 4 stars), which packs an 18x lens and is only 2.5 by 4.2 by 1.4 inches. Its body is mainly plastic, although it is of the quality found on many D-SLRs rather than that of low-end point-and-shoots. It comes in both red and black finishes. A large, 3-inch LCD gives you a sprawling view of what the camera's lens sees.

Canon traditionally updates its SX budget compact superzoom line every August/September, and 2011 sees the release of the £199 Canon PowerShot SX150 IS. The SX130 IS replacement is a case of evolution over revolution – not a bad thing, considering the great features and value the SX130 offered.The Canon PowerShot SX150 IS features a 14.1MP CCD (a 2MP increase on the SX130's 12.1MP) and an image stabilised 5-60mm 12x wide-angle zoom that offers the same 28-336mm equivalent reach as its predecessor. The bright, but relatively low-res, 3-inch LCD from last year's model is also retained.There's been a slight tweak to the layout of the controls – specifically, the welcome introduction of a direct movie record button and a rejig of the mode dial. The optical image stabilisation gets an upgrade, too. The Canon PowerShot SX150's new Intelligent IS system is designed to identify the shooting situation and apply the most appropriate form of stabilisation from a range of seven different settings, including Tripod IS, Panning IS and Macro IS.However, the key appeal of the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS, apart from the incredible zoom range, is the level of manual control it offers.
