Canon IXUS 300 HS / PowerShot SD4000 IS review

Canon's IXUS 300 HS (or PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH as it's known in North America) is a 10 Megapixel compact with a 3.8x optically-stabilised zoom and 3in widescreen display. Announced in May 2010, these headline specifications sound fairly average, but the IXUS 300 HS / SD4000 IS has a number of very important capabilities which take it beyond typical point-and-shoot compacts. Most notably it's the first IXUS / ELPH to feature the company's new High Sensitivity system, or HS for short. This employs a new back-illuminated 10 Megapixel CMOS sensor which claims superior low-light capabilities. Complementing this is an optical zoom with 28-105mm equivalent coverage and a brighter than average aperture of f2.0-5.3. When zoomed-out, the f2.0 aperture gathers twice as much light as one at f2.8, which means under the same conditions you could use half the sensitivity for better quality or a shutter speed twice as fast to better freeze action or minimise camera-shake. Coupled with the sensible resolution and a maximum sensitivity of 3200 ISO (at the full image size), the IXUS 300 HS / SD4000 IS promises to be an above average performer in low light.

Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS

Thanks to its very good image quality, wide-aperture lens, and aperture-priority and shutter-priority modes, the Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS ($350 as of August 13, 2010) is a standout camera in the compact point-and-shoot class. Although its glossy finish, lack of physical buttons, and pocket-friendly size would suggest otherwise, its performance is on a par with that of the excellent Canon PowerShot S90, a camera geared toward demanding photographers. The similarities the SD4000 IS shares with the S90 are all positive. Both cameras offer 10-megapixel sensors, 3.8X-optical-zoom lenses (28mm to 105mm), a bright f2.0 aperture at the wide-angle end, and very effective optical image stabilization. Both cameras also capture crisp, relatively noise-free images at high ISO levels, although the S90 performs a tad better at its ISO 6400 setting. What's more, both models have a 4X digital zoom that kicks the zoom range up to a simulated 15X at the telephoto end, and though digital zoom is rarely worth mentioning, both cameras produce sharp, usable images even after the digital zoom has cropped and enlarged the pictures.

Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS

Compact cameras have pulled off some pretty neat tricks in recent years, offering everything from pre-set scene modes to Face Detection to panoramic stitching. While some of these features have migrated up to more expensive digital SLRs, very few professional-level features have moved down to point-and-shoots. Until now. With the PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH, Canon has released a consumer-level compact camera that boasts a bright f/2 lens. For those readers unfamiliar with the parlance of f/stops, f/2 is an extremely large aperture for a lens, allowing more light to hit the imaging sensor so you can capture photos in dim conditions. An f/2 lens, which is typically used on a professional DSLR, also gives your images a shallow depth of field, letting you blur the background of a portrait to make your subject pop. While the Canon SD4000 f/2 lens is certainly not on par with what you'd find on a pricey DSLR -- the aperture actually ranges from f/2 to f/5.8 depending on how much you zoom -- it offers consumers a few of the advantages that once were only the domain of professional photographers. To make it easier to take advantage of that aperture control, the Canon SD4000, unlike most pocket cameras, has both an Aperture priority and Shutter priority exposure mode. But wait, that's not all!

Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS

The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS is a well priced compact camera that offers a decent zoom range and shoots attractive photos (apart from some minor color issues) and decent video, making it a good pick for casual shooters. More serious users, however, will miss the manuals controls that are not available, and the LCD screen on the back of the camera is not as sharp as other similar sized models. The PowerShot A4000 IS is a small, compact camera that could fit into a shirt pocket or small bag easily. It is built around a 10-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor twinned with a 3.8x zoom lens. On the back of the camera body is a 230k, 3-inch LCD screen. It has a clean smart design, but we did find that the metal front of the case is very easily scratched and marked, which means it could start to look shabby quickly unless you use a case. The SD4000 IS scored highly on our color tests, where we found that the camera did a good job of capturing the various colors in our test chart accurately. We found that the best color accuracy came with the My Colors feature turned off, and that the camera only struggled with a couple of colors: both greens and oranges were a little oversaturated.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

In technical terms, it's perhaps the most advanced Ixus yet, with a backlit CMOS sensor and a lens that opens to f/2 in wide-angle. Aesthetically, it picks up from the Ixus 110 IS, looking refined and stylish. The picture is somewhat mixed in this section. On the one hand, the Ixus 300 HS has been put together like the other top-quality cameras in the range, with decent materials and a perfect finish that inspires confidence. It's stylish too, and made us think of an F-117 (in the matte black model with grainy trim) or a Gallardo (the white version with a smooth finish). On the other hand, the smooth curves don't make holding the camera very easy, and there's no obvious handle or grip. The black version has a surface with a better grip, but the white one is more like a bar of a soap. It's almost like we've gone back in time two years, when the flew out of our hands as soon as we picked it up. Another downside is the screen. Although having a 16:9 widescreen display isn't a problem in itself, the resolution is too stingy to compete with today's high-end cameras (see inset). It's disappointing, because using the camera is a real treat thanks to the simple controls.

Canon IXUS 300 HS review

Little known fact: Canon's range of digital Ixus cameras turned 10 in May this year.Since then, cameras such as the Ixus 105 IS and 200 IS have made a huge difference to consumer photography. The 10-megapixel Canon 300 HS is another step up for pocket-sized photography - a small, beautifully-designed camera with stonking image quality and a massive feature list. And, with an f/2.0 lens and maximum ISO of 3200, it promises excellent low-light performance. We're big fans of the design. As we've come to expect from Canon's glamorous Ixus line, it's svelte, at 54mm high, and its 100mm width makes it easily pocketable. The matte black finish on our review model proved a little more divisive, with some concerned it could be more prone to scratches if slipped carelessly into a pocket already occupied by a set of keys.It does feel well-made, though. The metal chassis feels like it will resist dents and fractures, and although the 300 HS is small, it's easy to grip without feeling like you're in danger of dropping it. The most eye-catching feature on the back of the Canon 300HS is the huge 3-inch, 16:9 widescreen display.

Canon Powershot SD4000 IS

Canon's PowerShot S90 is one of the most popular cameras on CNET since its 2009 launch. The camera's features--primarily its manual shooting controls and f2.0 lens--made it a very attractive pocket camera option for digital SLR users. However, the f2.0 lens has benefits that snapshooters can appreciate, too, so Canon took a very similar lens and put it in the PowerShot SD4000 IS. It's the company's first Digital Elph to feature Aperture- and Shutter-priority modes, but there is no full manual option, no raw capture support, and the control ring that makes the S90 fun to use is not on this model. However, you do get 720p HD movie capture that the S90 doesn't have. The camera is also the company's first to feature a high-speed backside-illuminated CMOS sensor (BSI), though it's still the typical compact-camera-size sensor, 1/2.3-inch type. The sensor improves shooting speed performance over CCD-sensor-based PowerShots and also improves low-light photo quality. In fact, photo quality overall is excellent for a BSI CMOS camera. However, it seems that Canon didn't want to or couldn't take full advantage of the sensor's abilities, keeping shooting options for the most part pretty standard to what you'd find on other Digital Elphs.

Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS

At $349.99 (list), the 10-megapixel PowerShot SD4000 IS sits at the top of the price spectrum of Canon's compact point-and-shoot ELPH line. The camera's most compelling feature is its lens, which can let in a lot of light - making it ideal for those who tend to shoot in less-than-optimal lighting conditions. They're not as sharp as those from a D-SLR, but images are noise-free up through ISO 1600, which is rare for a pocket camera. If good low-light images aren't high on your priority list, however, you can get more features like a bigger, higher-res LCD and a longer zoom lens in cameras that cost less. The SD4000 can fit comfortably in pretty much any pocket, but at 2.13 by 3.94 by .93 (HWD), it isn't exactly slim. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 ($299.99 direct, ) has similar dimensions, except it's about a half-inch thinner, which makes a difference. The camera has an interesting design; it's a parallelogram with notched corners, a flat back and curved front. Our review sample was silver, but you get three additional color choices: black, white, or red. Despite being the flagship shooter in the Elph line, the SD4000 doesn't offer a flagship-quality LCD - less expensive models offer larger, sharper screens. This display itself is fine, it's easily viewable in sunlight, and is low on motion blur.
