Canon PowerShot G12

The Canon G12 is a high-end point-and-shoot that sports an image sensor that is larger than that typically found in a fixed lens camera. It sports an optical independent viewfinder, an articulated rear LCD, and a substantial, albeit lightweight, body size. It offers a host of manual controls and dials, including physical dials for both exposure compensation and ISO speed, in addition to both a front and rear control dial. Aimed at enthusiasts looking for greater control out of a point-and-shoot camera or as a second camera for those who want to leave the DSLR at home, the G12 offers the full photography experience in a relatively compact package. Color accuracy is always a bit of a sticking point among photographers. Most would rather capture colors that are as true to life as possible, a viewpoint that most high-end cameras aspire to. The G series from Canon seems to ignore this logic, however, as both the G12 and its predecessor could only manage a color error of around 3.8, when we typically look for errors under 3 from premium models. In truth, even basic point-and-shoot cameras rate higher in color accuracy than the G12, which is disappointing to say the least.

Canon G12 review

The latest in its G-series range of high-flying compact cameras, Canon's PowerShot G12 replaces the flagship PowerShot G11 just a little over a year after the latter was released. The G11 received rave reviews on its launch, and the Canon G12 offers some interesting new features over its predecessor. In our in-depth Canon G12 review we test the articulated screen, ISO range, image quality and more in this latest Canon compact camera.Update: See our video review belowThe king among Canon compact cameras, the top-range PowerShot G series has long been the Holy Grail for those who wanted the manual features of a DSLR but couldn't afford to commit to the larger, more expensive format. However with prices plunging and basic DSLRs available for around £350, the PowerShot G12 has its work cut out for it.Bristling with dials and buttons, the Canon G12 is clearly built for photographers who know what they're doing, and its maximum ISO 3200 sensitivity and articulated screen give it an edge over DSLRs. But can its image quality convince?

Canon PowerShot G12

Just a few years ago, the PowerShot G12's predecessors were the cat's meow - Canon's point-and-shoot G Series cameras looked and felt like digital SLRs, with manual controls and optical viewfinders packed into smaller-than-D-SLR bodies. Flash forward to 2011, and you'll find a handful of digital cameras that are nearly the same size and price as the 10-megapixel G12 ($499.99 list), but pack image sensors five to eight times larger, and take much better pictures. The G12 delivers image quality that competes with the best point and shooters. The thing is, though, these days, other cameras of this size and price can deliver D-SLR-quality images. If you want a small camera, you can get similar image quality for less with the Canon PowerShot S95 ($399.99, 4 stars). If you want higher-quality images, your $500 buys the much-more-talented, interchangeable-lens Sony Alpha NEX-3 ($549, 4.5 stars). Simply put, in 2011, the Canon G12 just doesn't make as much sense as it once did. At 3.0 by 4.41 by 1.9 inches, the G12 isn't pocketable. These days, there's only one reason a camera should be this bulky: a giant image sensor.

Canon PowerShot G12

Practically identical to its predecessor, the G11, the few updates to the Canon PowerShot G12 include 720/24p video capture--a much-needed boost over the outdated VGA movies--now with stereo audio and a Mini-HDMI connector. Like the S95, the G12 also adds an HDR scene mode that combines three shots. Unlike implementations that take advantage of fast BSI sensors, however, it requires the steadiness of a tripod, making it only marginally useful. As you'd expect, the G12's image quality mirrors that of the G11's. It looks great at the lowest ISO sensitivities, with excellent color and exposure; you can start to see a slight bit of detail degradation starting at ISO 200 that becomes more overt (along with noisy) at ISO 400. ISO 800 is probably the highest usable setting under the most forgiving circumstances. Picky shooters really won't want to go beyond ISO 200. Unlike the LX5, processing the G12's files as raw doesn't deliver an unambiguous advantage over the JPEGs. The artifacts and colors are a bit different, and you might be able to gain a little sharpness from the raw, but it doesn't gain you any shooting exposure advantages.

Canon PowerShot G12

Thanks to its easy operation and adroit balance of strong performance, helpful hardware, and fun shooting modes, the 10-megapixel Canon PowerShot G12 ($500 as of January 3, 2011) earned our top pick in a recent roundup of five advanced point-and-shoot cameras. The G12 received the best overall scores in our image-quality tests--a result that merely scratches the surface of the camera's appeal. Like the competing (and also excellent) Nikon Coolpix P7000, the 5X optical zoom G12 (28mm to 140mm) offers fast access to ISO and exposure-compensation settings via top-mounted dials, a proprietary hot shoe that supports an external flash, an increasingly rare optical viewfinder that helps preserve battery life, an electronic level to keep shots straight, and a thick-but-sturdy body that can take some roughhousing. In the hardware realm, it matches the P7000 and then outpoints it with one extra: an adjustable 2.8-inch LCD that tilts and swivels to help frame overhead shots, ground-level photos, and self-portraits. The G12 turned in the best scores of the bunch in PCWorld Labs' subjective tests for image and video quality, with especially impressive marks for exposure quality, color accuracy, and video quality.

Canon PowerShot G12

At an MRP of Rs. 31,995, the G12 is costly. Entry level dSLR cameras are cheaper, and will give you better results. The G12 is as good as, or better than, most compact cameras, but it is also pricey enough to warrant second thought. At this price point, an ultra zoom would be better value. Need a compact camera? Buy an SX120 IS or thereabouts, and save a lot of dough. Need better image quality? Get a dSLR. To those in the know, Canons "G" series of PowerShot cameras represent the pinnacle of Canons compact-camera arsenal. These are not compact, removable lens systems like Sony's NEX series, but rather compact cameras that offer more features, performance and manual control than other PowerShot bodies, obviously with a higher price tag. To maintain exclusiveness, there is only one G series camera at a time. With the G10, Canon opted for a larger 15-megapixel camera, a blatant attempt at testing the effectiveness of the grossly untrue marketing phrase "more pixels are better". Rather predictably, the enthusiast market didn't buy this, and with the subsequent G11, and now the G12, things have stayed at 10-megapixels.

Canon PowerShot G12 review

Canon's PowerShot G12 is the latest model in the company's flagship G-series, designed to satisfy the demands of enthusiasts who want a powerful compact or a pocketable backup to a DSLR. Announced in September 2010, it's the successor to the PowerShot G11. The G12 shares a number of key specifications with its predecessor, including a 10 Megapixel sensor, 5x (28-140mm equivalent) zoom, fully articulated 2.8in screen, full manual control, flash hotshoe, RAW recording, and a retro-styled body that's packed with physical controls. New to the PowerShot G12 over its predecessor are 720p HD video with stereo sound, in-camera HDR, Hybrid Image Stabilisation, Dynamic Range enhancement, Tracking AF, new special effects, a choice of aspect ratios, an electronic levelling guide, finger control dial, finer ISO increments, and support for an optional filter adapter. There may be nothing revolutionary in this list, but put together they represent a fair upgrade over the earlier G11, addressing some criticisms of that model, while also delivering a couple of nice surprises. In our full review of the PowerShot G12, we'll see if it remains one of the best choices for demanding enthusiasts.

Canon PowerShot G12

Canon's PowerShot G12 digital camera is the company's latest flagship fixed-lens camera, and a direct successor to last year's PowerShot G11 model. The Canon G12 retains the same ten megapixel CCD sensor resolution as its predecessor, coupled to the same DIGIC 4 image processor that featured in both the G10 and G11. The pairing of sensor and processor has now been giving branding, described as the "HS System," with the initials standing for "High Sensitivity." The Canon PowerShot G12 retains the same 5x optical zoom lens from the PowerShot G10 and G11, which offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths ranging from a useful 28mm wide-angle to a 140mm telephoto. And as with its predecessor, the Canon G12 includes true optical image stabilization to help combat blur from camera shake. Also like its predecessor, the PowerShot G12 has a 2.8-inch tilt/swivel LCD display, with 461,000 dot resolution. Other features retained from the G11 include a high-definition HDMI video output connector with Consumer Electronics Control (HDMI-CEC) compatibility, and the ability to save still images not only as compressed JPEGs, but also as Raw files.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

As the tenth model in Canon's PowerShot G range, the G12 has matured into a very nice camera. It has a slightly reworked design and handling, a swivel LCD, a 10-Megapixel sensor, a 24-140 mm zoom lens that's now stabilised and a 720p HD video mode. So can the Canon G12 make its mark in the highly competitive market for expert compacts and fight off the likes of the Nikon P7000, Panasonic LX5 and Samsung EX1? You can tell the G12 is an expert camera as soon as you pick up thanks to its heavy, all-metal design and its high-end build and finish. It feels well-made and it doesn't feel like it'll fall apart a few years down the line. If we really wanted to be picky, then it would perhaps have been nice to see rubber-sealed joints to help keep water and dust out of the battery/memory card compartment and connections. The G12 is a nice camera to hold and handle even if it's nothing out of the ordinary. The finish is a little bit slippy though, and the grip handle isn't deep enough for our liking. We were also slightly disappointed to see that the 3-inch LCD only displays 460,000 dots when some competitors' models (Nikon P7000, for example) are twice as sharp.

Canon PowerShot G12 Review

We review Canon's next iteration of the fabled G series, the G12, which introduces HD video and a number of other upgrades to the pro-grade shooter.Ferraris get updated every few years. And so do Canon’s “G” series point-and-shoot cameras. Last year we tested the G11 and liked it a lot, but it still had some drawbacks, notably the lack of high-def video recording. The company rectified that problem with the new 10-megapixel G12, and even added a few tweaks that’ll please many shutterbugs. Let’s see what they are, and if the G12 is worth nearly 500 clams.Put the G11 next to the G12 and at first glance they’re nearly identical, other than a changed model number. The G series doesn’t sport day-glo colors or the thinness of an iPhone. It’s big, bulky and looks quite old fashioned. In fact it looks almost like the new Nikon Coolpix P7000, another $499 digicam marketed to serious photographers. Check out the photos and you’ll see this is not a frivolous piece of gear. It measures 4.4 x 3 x 1.9 (WHD, in inches) and weighs 12.4 ounces without the battery and card, nearly a pound fully loaded.Look closely on the front and you’ll see one of the improvements—a handy jog wheel right below the shutter.

Canon PowerShot G12

Here at Photokina in Cologne, Germany, we got our greedy paws on the Canon PowerShot G12, announced last week as a replacement for the popular 2009 G11. The G12 is a camera for serious photographers, offering a bevvy of manual controls, many of which have dedicated control dials. How is the G12 different from the G11? A front-mounted scroll wheel, more ISO increments, upgraded image stabilization, and 720/24p video. Here’s our first look at the new flagship for Canon’s PowerShot lineup. The G12 brings back the same sleek retro design of the popular PowerShot G12. The camera only comes in black and it is really quite black: some bits are shiny, some are matte, some are textured, but all are black. All the same buttons and dials are there with one significant addition: a small, front-mounted scroll wheel. The front-mounted scroll wheel is a secondary control that’s used in tandem with the rear control dial. This allows you to operate two manual image controls at once (for instance, shutter speed and aperture) without having to toggle between them. Another minor change from last year’s G12: a small rubber resting position for your thumb on the back of the camera.
