Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS

Pocket-megazoom cameras have been around for a few years now, but you probably haven't seen one as small or as simple as the Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS ($300 as of April 7, 2012). In a way, it represents a new breed of basic compact camera: Rather than cramming more megapixels into a tiny sensor, the 10-megapixel PowerShot Elph 520 HS keeps the pixel count relatively sane and jacks up the optical zoom to 12X (28mm to 336mm), an impossible-sounding level for a camera of this size. This tiny little camera can fit comfortably in a shirt or pants pocket; at just 0.76 inch deep, it's the size of a deck of playing cards, and it's a pocket megazoom that's even smaller than many of today's 3X-optical-zoom cameras. The trade-offs for the tiny size start with the camera's manual controls for shutter and aperture--there aren't any--but this model does offer Canon's latest auto-exposure functions, scene modes, and in-camera effects. Regrettably, this camera is a disappointing performer, at least if you're used to the generally excellent output of Canon's PowerShot line. Our review unit made everything look a bit soft, and the PowerShot Elph 520 HS will leave many owners wanting bigger buttons, better battery life, and more fine-tunable control.

Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS

The Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS makes a very good first impression. It's a small, attractive box with a 12x zoom neatly tucked inside and a high-resolution 3-inch LCD on back. Even with the lens fully extended it doesn't get any bigger than an ultracompact with half of its zoom range. Taking the shine off that first impression, though, is the camera's photo and video quality and, to some extent, its usability. Basically, some trade-offs were made to get the 520 HS down to its petite dimensions that make it a little less attractive, especially at $300. The Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS' photo quality is good to very good, but overall disappointing compared with past HS-model Elphs. Even at its lowest ISO settings, subjects look soft and noisy when viewed at 100 percent. Unfortunately, that means the 10-megapixel resolution doesn't give you much room for enlarging and cropping. I usually have no problem recommending PowerShots for shooting indoors or in low light, but the 520 HS gets noticeably worse at and above ISO 400. The one positive is that colors remain consistently good up to ISO 800. At ISO 1600 and 3200, noise and noise reduction destroy fine detail, making things look soft and smeary, and you can see yellow blotching from noise.

Canon's Elph 520 HS adds a little flavor to a generally boring point-and-shoot world though it does come with some bitter tastes.The Canon Elph 520 HS is a slim, sleek and powerful little camera. You can think of the Elph series like the PowerShot’s offbeat, eccentric cousin: It looks and acts a little different, which makes for some awkward moments here and there, but it more than makes up for it with quality and creativity. To sum it up, the Elph series brings a little variety to what can be a somewhat monotonous table. While there are some hang-ups here and there with the $300 Elph 520 HS, it offers a surprisingly satisfying experience. Besides your Elph 520 HS digital camera, you’ll get the battery, its charger, USB cable, wrist strap, and CD-ROM. Normal affair for a camera like this. Right out of the box, the Elph 520 HS is a good-looking camera. The camera’s boxy with hard, angular edges – it’s a nice deviation from the softer-looking point-and-shoots on the market. Save for the shutter/zoom toggle on top of the camera, the Elph’ssurface is entirely smooth and flat. It’s almost military-like in its minimalism, with fewer buttons and controls than many competitor cameras.

We're only human—sometimes we fall instantly in love and we just can't help it. That's basically what happened when we laid eyes on the Canon Ixus 500 HS, a boxy little metallic snapper with shimmery translucent colours that sent shivers down our spine. The Ixus 500 HS oozes charm, and has a pretty unique look that sets it apart from other compacts on the market right now. And since 10 Megapixels are largely sufficient and a 12x zoom is always an attractive feature, maybe—just maybe—our instant crush will turn out to be a lasting love affair ... so long as Canon keeps its promises and so long as picture quality is up to scratch. So is Canon's Ixus 500 HS just a tease or is its beauty more than skin deep? Time to find out! On first contact, the Ixus 500 HS generally inspires an enthusiastic response. It's small, it's cute, it's stylish, and it comes in sleek black or show-stopping blue or red. Put simply, it looks great, and build quality is impeccable. As is all too often the way with love at first sight, once the initial wave of passion dies down, you start noticing little flaws. The main downside of the Ixus 500 HS is directly related to its small size and large screen, as all of the camera's controls are bunched up on the right-hand side of the rear face.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 520 HS

Canon's PowerShot ELPH 520 HS is an update to the decent 510 HS. It boasts a smaller sensor, identical optical zoom, slower burst speed, and reduced megapixel resolution. Wait, what? Have we stepped into a time machine? On paper the 520 HS seems like a major step backward. Things weren't quite that bad during our time with the camera, but we struggled to find actual improvements. The sacrifices come in exchange for a smaller form factor, this camera is more portable then the 510 HS and fits easily into a jean pocket. Exterior design is also quite stylish, meaning this could be an ideal night-out model. Overall the 520 HS’ chassis has been updated to a more angular design than its predecessor, the 510 HS. The distinctive wrap-around battery and media slot covers have been retained, but the body is more sharply rectangular, and lacks the curved corners of the 510 HS. But by far the biggest change is the move away from an all-touchscreen interface. Thank God. We normally hate touchscreen interfaces on cameras, since they usually have a way of making relatively simply actions complicated and slow. This does mean that the LCD’s size has been reduced slightly, to make room for traditional buttons, but we don’t mind in the least.
