Canon PowerShot A800 review

With such a low price tag you could forgive the A800 for scrimping on features, although at first glance this isn't necessarily the case. The model features a 3.3x optical zoom, covering a focal range of 37-122mm, as well as a 10MP CCD sensor. Canon's DIGIC III processor also features along with Smart Auto technology. The only area of the specification where it feels that Canon has scrimped is the LCD screen, being just 2.5in and with a resolution of just 115k-dots.The A800 doesn't feature the most refined design of a compact camera, with the body boasting a wedge-shaped form - this is no doubt due to the space needed to accommodate the two AA batteries which provide the power. The rest of the controls will be familiar to any compact camera user, and allow for easy operation. There are several niggles in use - the model's LCD screen struggles in harsh lighting due to the poor resolution, while the zoom features an amount of travel after removing your finger from the button, making accurate zooming difficult. Image quality is generally reliable - colours appear rich while white balance errs to warmer tones. One area where the camera does struggle, however, is with dynamic range and in particular highlights, which have a tendency to blow out.

Canon PowerShot A800 review

For Canon, the PowerShot A800 is as basic as it gets. The A800 is Canon's entry-level compact camera, and as you'd expect for 60 quid, it's a no-frills affair. No-frills doesn't necessarily mean dumbed-down, however, and there's actually quite a lot to like about this device. Indeed, the specifications belie the bargain-bucket price and include a 10 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, Digic III processor and Smart Auto mode. In terms of shooting mode, you get Auto and Program mode, along with the ability to adjust exposure, flash, metering, ISO and other key settings. At this end of the market, Canon is competing against camera phones, so does the A800 offer enough to persuade punters not to put the money towards an iPhone instead? The PowerShot A800 replaces the PowerShot A495, but it's a minor upgrade rather than a great leap forward. However, it's certainly no cosmetic upgrade, as the boxy looks and portly girth evoke a compact camera from five years ago. Indeed, the PowerShot A800 is a porker compared to the sleeker (and pricier) IXUS range, and while you can just about squeeze it in a pocket, the camera will create an unsightly/embarrassing bulge.

Canon PowerShot A800

At $89.99 (list) the 10-megapixel PowerShot A800 is the least-expensive digital camera Canon sells. Unsurprisingly, this pocket shooter lacks in features, but it covers the basics, and there's something to be said for its simple experience. It also delivers good, clean, sharp images, along with solid speeds. So far, so good. Then you get to what's missing: a high-res LCD, a rechargeable battery, and high-def video. But the biggest problem is the camera's lack of optical image stabilization, which can mean blurry pictures. Sure, the A800 will outperform, say, your cell phone's integrated camera, offering better-looking and higher-res still images, along with a further-reaching 3.3x optical zoom lens. But if you can afford it, you should step up to a digital camera that offers optical image stabilization, like the Canon PowerShot A3000 IS ($149.99, 4 stars) or the General Electric E1480W ($169.99, 3 stars). Shaped like a trapezoid with rounded edges, the A800 is a bit thicker on the right side, creating a comfortable mini-grip. The camera will slip into your pocket without a problem, but, at 2.43 by 3.71 by 1.23 inches (HWD), it's on the husky side when compared with other pocket cameras.

Canon PowerShot A800 review

The Canon PowerShot A800 is a budget compact with a 10 Megapixel sensor, 3.3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD screen. Announced in January 2011, it is the cheapest and most basic PowerShot money can buy. It replaces the A490 / A495 launched a year previously and, like those models, takes two AA batteries and shoots VGA (640 x 480) resolution video. Canon has simplified its A-series line up replacing both the A495 and A490 with a single model - the A800. Though the A495 remains available that's unlikely to be the case for long and, at this end of the market you're, unlikely to make much of a saving going for the older model. However, as there's not a huge difference in the specification, it's certainly worth taking a look. The next step up the Canon product range is the PowerShot A1200. Also powered by a pair of AA's, the PowerShot A1200 has a bigger 12.1 Megapixel sensor, a wider zoom range, a bigger screen, more shooting modes and 720p video. The budget compact market is a competitive place and other manufacturers are going all out to provide the best value for money deal. Features that were once the preserve of mid-range and high end models are trickling down.
