Canon PowerShot A3400 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot A3400 IS is an image stabilised digital compact camera with a 16 megapixel CCD image sensor, 5x optical zoom starting at a wide 28mm, 3-inch touch screen LCD display with Touch Shutter and Touch AF functionality, 720p HD movies, live view control and a help button. Available in black, gold, red or silver for £129 / $179, at first glance the Canon PowerShot A3400 IS looks like it could be one of the most user friendly cameras on the market today - find out by reading our review. Once upon a time the Canon IXUS models were the good looking and well-made range of digital compact cameras. Now, it seems, Canon have shifted that pattern of focus and included some of the PowerShot range too. We're not talking about the top of the range 400+ PowerShot models, we're talking about the A3400 IS, a 120 budget digital compact point and shooter. Interestingly, from the front it looks a lot like an IXUS with it's blocky design and clean, straight lines. The colour co-ordinated 5x optical zoom lens sits flush with the rest of the body.

Canon PowerShot A3400 IS review

The Canon PowerShot A3400 IS is a 16 Megapixel compact with a 5x stabilised optical zoom and a 3 inch touch screen. Announced along with the rest of the 2012 PowerShot range in January it's the first PowerShot with a touch screen, a feature normally reserved for the more expensive ELPH / IXUS models. The A3400 IS features Canon's 'Intelligent IS' stabilisation system and 'Powered IS' for eliminating wobbles during movie shooting. Its best quality movie recording mode is 720p at 25 frames per second and it can also film using Creative effects such as Miniature mode. It has a mono microphone for movie audio and a built-in flash. Here I've compared the A3400 IS with the cheaper PowerShot A2300. Between them the A2300, A2300 IS and A3400 IS make up the mid-range of the 2012 A series sharing a similar body, control layout and features, with the A2300 IS providing the option of optical image stabilisation and the A3400 IS adding a touch screen. Canon PowerShot A3400 IS

The Canon PowerShot A3400 IS ($179.99 direct) is a pocket camera that succeeds in having a responsive touch-screen LCD, but in a rare misstep for Canon, fails in most of its image gathering capabilities. Its lens is rather sharp, albeit extremely slow on the long end of its middling 5x zoom range, but the 16-megapixel camera is plagued by high image noise, even though it saps details from photos in a vain attempt to curtail it. The camera, which is also slow to start up and recycle between photos, doesn't come close to ousting one of Canon's better efforts, the PowerShot Elph 310 HS ($259.99, 4 stars) as our Editors' Choice for mid-range point-and-shoot cameras. Design and Features The A3400 looks absolutely great from the outside. Its metal body is small and solid, and the camera can be had in red, silver, gold, and black finishes. It measures 2.2 by 3.7 by 0.8 inches (HWD) and weighs about 5 ounces, making it almost indistinguishable from the 8x (28-224mm f/3-5.9 equivalent) zoom PowerShot A4000 IS ($199.99, 3.5 stars). The A3400's 5x (28-140mm f/2.8-6.9) is a bit less ambitious—and it is about half an f-stop slower on the telephoto end. This means that the camera will need to use a longer shutter speed or higher ISO setting when zoomed all the way in than you would with the A4000.

Canon PowerShot A3400 IS (Preview)

Canon announced a whole slew of entry-level A-series models this year, including the A3400 IS, on preview here. It replaces last year's A3300 IS model, but unlike its predecessor, the A3400 doesn't sit at the top the budget-cam lineup—that honor goes to the 8x-zooming A4000 IS. Like all of its lower-end cousins, the A3400 sports a 5x zoom, but stands out with a larger 3-inch LCD, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and optical image stabilization. It's a modest camera by anybody's current standards, but it's also just $179. We spent a few minutes with the A3400 at the CP+ 2012 tradeshow in Yokohama, Japan this week. Read on for our first impressions. The A3400 IS has fairly soft edges and a smooth finish, a bit like a classier ELPH from a few years ago could’ve looked. It’s a sleeker, more modern design than last year’s A3300, leaving off the mode dial and the curvy, almost bulbous lines. Available colors include red, silver, black, and an unfortunate shade of gold that looks brown in most lighting.
