See less-compressed SD version: vimeo.com Shooting samples to teach myself about Canon HF S11 modes and the character of the Dynamic-OIS stabilizer (see the down-pan for an example of its characteristic "let me fix that" "bounce" motion -- imo the right way to use Canon D-IS is to aim the camera itself when panning, rather than look at the monitor, since the D-IS will eventually try to correct and "center"). I like D-IS, though it has its own "flavor." All shots here are handheld. The apparent "stickiness" in the pan samples are due not to the OIS but the post-production web compression, which stutters at a slow, stead rate. The passing train shows some good examples of "CMOS rolling shutter tilt" when it gets going.

Shot with a Canon S90 Camera, edited with Imovie (2nd time used) and audio of the bike recorded with a rode stereo Videomic plugged into a Olympus DS-30 Voice recorder. While I await my new video camera (Canon HFS11) This is the best I can do for footage. My Sony DCR-TRV19E doesn't even shoot this good.

One of the most amazing gifts I have ever received was the Canon IVIS HFS11 Jo gave me during the holidays. Since receiving the gift, I have been diligently experimenting with camera, trying to use all its features to see how well it really works. The reason I received this camera, is that for years, Ive been using Canon cameras and have loved them. The one thing that I havent enjoyed is using MiniDV tapes. I really didnt like recording to the medium and then having to import them to the computer. I also didnt appreciate the fact that from time-to-time, there was a glitch when importing. So Ive been long wanting to go to a tapeless system. There are several cameras out there that record to disks, but none that really did what I wanted to do. Then I saw this camera on the Canon website. Not only was it an HD camera, but it recorded on solid state media. Furthermore, it also had a slot for an SD card allowing the camera to store up to 96gb of data per recording. Ive been drooling over the camera, since it does everything that I wanted, and would finally get rid of that problem that I had with the Vixia30 the mics being placed right next to the tape drive, thus creating extra noise. So lets talk about the camera It records in full HD at 24megabits per second. Thats a great resolution for digital recording. Something that Im really happy with. I was also happy that the camera CCD was upgraded from 3.1mp in the Vixia to 8.1mp in this camera. The improved CCD does a great job ...

Canon HFS11 Review (vs Sanyo Xacti hd1000)

www.canon.com.au Some other things I didn't mention: There's a 64GB internal HD, which can hold copious amounts of data, but on top of that, you can also add SD cards, which basically makes it unlimited. Some people don't like the mic placement because it's easy to hit with your finger (they say)...but I haven't found it to be a problem. Seems like you'd get used to it quickly enough, and I like the mic as it is. Maybe it's just in my head, but it seems like the audio comes in better with there being mics on each side of the wide lens casing. Any thoughts/comments/questions about the camera? Pop it in the comments! I'll do my best to get back to everyone. ^^

Quick Playtime with Canon Vixia HFS11

I was asked for an opinion about Canon's new Dynamic OIS -- see for yourself! I've only had this camera for a day, but it's particular character of OIS is becoming clear. It's great -- really great -- for slow walks. But no OIS can do EVERYTHING, so you'll see it struggle to compensate and "right itself" after large sudden movements (like pans). Full geeky details: simple shooting modes, no manual anything, SP compression, converted to cineform & cut in the crudest slapdash manner using Premiere Pro CS4 (yes, I also tried editing the AVCHD files directly in PP-CS4, and yes they work fine) on my Windows laptop.
