Canon VIXIA HF M31 HD Video Camera Test - Meets California King Snake

I just purchased a new Canon Vixia HF M31 Camera so I can produce better quality video. This video was shot with the camera straight out of the box. All settings were default. I will have some more time to shoot another video over the next few days and plan to do a review if there is some interest. This camera is new on the market and there is not a lot of information available on it yet. Let me know if there is something you would like to see tested and I will attempt it. The audio is from the built in mic. No snakes were harmed in the making of this video. The California King snake in this video is actually a pet. Thanks for watching.

June 1, 2010 Later in the afternoon This is footage captured from a Canon Vixia HF-M31. The video is to see what footage from this camcorder looks like. Today was kind of cloudy when this footage was captured, but not too cloudy. There was some sunlight available. I had my camcorder on FXP 17Mbps. The camcorder captures, of course, at 1920x1080. Focus was on auto. I didn't use any special White Balance settings. It was on Auto. Same with Image Effect. It wasn't on Vivid or anything. Just off. Video files from the camcorder were put together and saved as an MPEG-2 file at 1920x1080 with Pinnacle Studio 12. The HF-M31 is an awesome 1080 HD camcorder. I highly recommend it.

Canon Vixia HF M31 - full HD video 2 - Bedroom with so-so lighting

June 1, 2010 The next day. Trying out the M31 high def camcorder in my bedroom. There is lighting but not like public store bright lighting. This won't be one of the more exciting videos. But it's a good one if you're considering buying this camcorder. I mean buying one of your own. Mine isn't for sale ;-) This video is to see what the footage looks like in this type of lighting compared to being outdoors in sunlight. I had the White Balance on Auto. Image Effect was on Off. No Vivid setting or anything. Frame rate was set on 60i, which I always use. I don't use the other two, especially the 24FPS option. So far with my knowledge which is still limited but probably better than most casual consumers, I totally recommend this camcorder. I don't work for Canon or have anything to do with them other than having bought a number of their products. I'm happy with all of them. A couple Powershot cameras, a scanner, and this camcorder. On the zoom in on the blue ball, on the last zoom in, I used the stabilization button on the view screen.

Montreal Canadiens Victory Celebration (not a riot) May 12 2010

Saint Catherine Street celebrations shortly after the Montreal Canadians defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on May 12, 2010. Unlike what you might have been led to believe on the news, it was far from a proper riot. Only four stores were looted later in the evening by a handful of criminals, all within the same immediate area. Most of the festivities were very civilized, with reasonable restraint exercised by both the fans and the police. Recorded on a Canon HF R10 camcorder set to PF30 recording, Night Mode image setting, Dynamic image stabilization, XP+ (1440x1080, 12 Mbps) recording format. No adjustments have been applied to the audio or video. Rendered in XviD compressed video at Quantizer 4, and uncompressed audio at 16 bits 48 KHz.

Canon Vixia HF M31 - full HD video 3 - Very low light and dark rooms

June 1, 2010 Very early in the morning and it's still dark outside. This is showing what the footage looks like in the dark. Obviously it gets fuzzy when it's really dark. Still a darn good HD camcorder. Update, March 3, 2011: It should be noted that I had the camcorder settings on automatic. Someone with the username CoroaEntertainment on YouTube recently suggested to me some settings for low light conditions that I found to work great! 1. Rec. Programs - Choose Shutter priority (Tv). Pick 1/30s speed 2. AGC Limit - Set to 16dB or less. 3. XV color mode (in menu) - ON (for a better color video capture) 4. Image Effects (in menu) - choose 'Custom' (C) and adjust like this: Brightness.. +1 (more shadow detail) Contrast....... -1 (less highlight clipping) Color............ +1 Sharpness.... 0 (Some may like +1 better) Those are his recommendations for low light conditions. In extremely low light conditions, there isn't much that can be done. But this will still help in dim light situations. I did find that the XV color feature did make the video look reddish, but it may be because I was in a place with red walls and other things. So I leave that off and follow the rest of the suggested settings for low light conditions.

Canon Vixia HF R11 HD Digital Camcorder (24p / Color Correction)

The title says it all. I just shot some stuff around the house in 24 frames per second using the Cine Mode option on my new HD camcorder (the Canon Vixia HF R11). I then edited the footage and adjusted the colors to my liking on Final Cut Express. I personally like the video quality on this camera a lot more than on the DSLR cameras that I've tried out. (Sorry for the shaky footage. I didn't have a tripod at the time.) The song in the background is "Porcelain" by Moby.

Canon Vixia HF M31 - full HD video 1 - A bird. A lizard doing push ups.

May 31, 2010. I just got this HD camcorder yesterday. The Canon Vixia HF M31. It's an awesome HD camcorder! This is some footage I did today with it. I'm still new at using this camcorder. I think I had settings like White Balance on Auto for this footage. It was done in FXP 17Mbps mode. Records in full 1080 HD. There is one higher mode at 24Mbps. I feel that I got a little too much sunlight in this footage. That is apparent on the root of the bird house. It looks over exposed. Kinda saturated too much with white. Or maybe the roof had a bit of a reflective surface. Some sources of information like the Studio 12 booklet define 1080i as 1440x1080. I put the 3 raw footage clips together, cutting a bit of excess out, and made the video as MPEG-2 with the Preset option HD 1080i. This makes it at 1920x1080, not 1440x1080. So this video is true full HD at 1920x1080. To avoid confusion with the second title screen. I used Pinnacle Studio 12 to do this. I may consider a program like Sony Vegas. The third clip of three is a close up of a door. I was holding the camcorder looking at function settings or something and saw the camcorder auto focusing on that. I was impressed with the detail and decided to record a little bit of that. I know this is a lot to read. But I want to add that the really slow zoom on the bird house was not an editing effect in Studio 12. It was the actual zoom on the camcorder. You can adjust the speed of zooming in and out. July 28, 2010 - More sample footage from the Canon Vixia HF-M31 This time the footage is straight from the camcorder. It wasn't converted to an MPEG video file. It was captured in FXP 17 Mbps mode. There was a UV filter over the lens. Settings were on auto/default. This is the actual file from the camcorder with the .MTS extension. The footage was done indoors looking through a window. The window wasn't perfectly clean but it was mostly clean. When the camera movement is kinda blocky when zoomed in, it's because I was using the IS Powered(stabilization) button. It's not a drop in frame rate. It's the camcorder trying to keep the visual view still.
