Canon Legria HF G10 review

The Legria HF G10 is currently Canon's flagship consumer camcorder. The main attractions include a large 'HD CMOS Pro' image sensor, a high-quality lens and plenty of manual controls. It's a serious slice of camcorder alright, but is it worth the high asking price of £1,200 or thereabouts?The top end of the consumer camcorder market can be a somewhat confusing place. Prices seem to vary wildly, while a variety of different features have been adopted by manufacturers as key selling points, including progressive recording, GPS and even built-in projectors. With the G10, Canon's tactic is to focus on the quality of the device's high-definition video output, whilst also offering a tempting proposition for those who want to take manual control of their creations. The G10 isn't small by current standards. The large barrel part of the barrel-grip body forms the housing of the sizeable high-definition video lens. Further bulk comes in the form of a very big, 3.5-inch, fold-out display on one side and the camcorder's grip on the other. Also adding to the beefiness are 32GB of internal memory, dual SDXC-compatible memory-card slots, a mini accessory shoe and an electronic viewfinder. The result is a fairly heavy -- 545g -- but well-balanced device.

The HF G10 is Canon's top-of-the-range camcorder, and is at the very top of the food chain when it comes to the manufacturer's long line of video cameras aimed at the general public. Canon certainly hasn't tried to downsize the HF G10, whose tough plastic frame, although relatively light, feels very stocky. Now that SLRs are beginning to take over the world of HD video, lens hoods are back n fashion, and there's one here. There's nothing too complicated about this camcorder which isn't exactly brimming with bells and whistles. You switch it on with the Power button and turn it off by closing the screen. Shots are lined up using the retractable viewfinder, but it's likely to prove too small for many users. In any case, the 3.4'', 922 000 pixel LCD screen is excellent. It's almost like having a monitor built into the side of your camcorder, and because it's touch-sensitive you can use to access the menus. The interface is a little simpler than Sony's: out go the animated icons, and in their place is a rather complicated list of options that it isn't always easy to work your way though using just one finger. The fact that the screen isn't too responsive doesn't help either. All of the usual buttons are there including the progressive zoom, and a mode dial (cinema, auto, manual).

Canon Vixia HF G10

With a street price well above $1,000, the Canon Vixia HF G10 needs to deliver a lot more than just its extensive manual feature set--especially since Canon is creating a potentially confusing lineup by putting its HD CMOS Pro sensor in this model, skipping the next one down, and then using it in the midrange HF M4xx series. The sensor is the one currently used in the company's entry-level pro models, albeit by itself rather than in a trio. Because it's larger than a typical consumer sensor, with 2.75 micron pixels rather than 1.7 micron pixels, Canon claims a 280 percent improvement in dynamic range over previous prosumer models, with a new minimum recommended light level of 1.5 lux. There's also a significantly more expensive "pro" version of this camcorder, the Canon XA10, which adds a detachable handle that includes dual XLR inputs, audio switches, an infrared light, a tally lamp, a removable microphone holder, zoom and record switches, and a pass-through accessory shoe. The combination of the larger-pixel sensor and a high-quality lens results in some of the best video quality I've seen in a consumer camcorder.
