Canon EOS Rebel T3i
Some digital camera upgrades outperform their predecessors by leaps and bounds. Some camera upgrades move forward by inches. The Canon Rebel T3i falls into the latter camp. This follow-up to the Editors' Choice Rebel T2i ($799.99, 4.5 stars) adds a flip-out LCD, but otherwise doesn't change any of the major details. It ends up a decent midrange SLR at $899.99 (list) with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, but it simply doesn't wow us, and actually turns out to be slightly slower than the T2i, with softer images, for $100 more. DesignThe most notable new feature on the T3i is its articulating 3-inch LCD. The 1,040k-dot display can flip to the side and pivot up and down 270 degrees, giving a lot of flexibility when shooting crowds or other subjects requiring very high or very low camera angles. Besides that, the T3i looks and feels nearly identical to the T2i, right down to the SD/SDHC/SDXC card door on the right side. In fact, the only other physical change to the camera is its A/V connections. The microphone, A/V out, and HDMI connectors are still located on the left side of the camera, but this time the microphone port is hidden with the remote port under a separate rubber door from the A/V and HDMI connectors.
Canon EOS 600D review
Canon's triple-digit EOS line has traditionally catered for those dipping their toes into DSLR photography, but as successive models have acquired more functionality, they've ventured further into enthusiast territory. The Canon 600D sits somewhere in between the two camps, with a small form and entry-level styling, but many features inherited from the enthusiast EOS 60D. Even so, it varies in only a handful of ways to the previous EOS 550D, and arrives only a year after that model. So, is the new arrival simply a stop-gap model, a retort to competitors gaining ground with their own offerings? Or it just the next logical step in a series long seen as a barometer of DSLR technology? Despite a number of other changes, the EOS 600D carries over the same sensor/processor combination seen on the 550D. The APS-C CMOS sensor still contains 18.7MP to give an effective total of 18MP, while the DIGIC 4 processing engine facilitates a burst rate of 3.7fps for up to 34 JPEG images, six raw images, or four simultaneous raw and JPEG captures.
Canon EOS 600D review
If you want a high-quality, dependable digital SLR, then Canon's EOS range is a good place to start looking. The latest model from the manufacturer is the EOS 600D. At around £630 for the body only and £700 for the camera together with an 18-55mm lens, the 600D is reasonably priced for a fairly high-end dSLR. But does it bring anything new to the table or is it just a minor refresh of last year's model, the price of which has now fallen significantly? At first glance, last year's EOS 550D and the 600D look almost identical, notwithstanding a few variations in the leather-look grip and the mode dial. Turn the 600D around, however, and you'll find a somewhat more significant change in the new design -- the 600D comes with a flip-out LCD screen, not unlike the sort you find on a camcorder. Bold, warm colours, bags of detail and barely any noise -- the 600D delivers sterling performance even with a relatively limited lens (click image to enlarge). The 3-inch display is larger than average and of exceptionally high quality, offering more than a million pixels of detail, as well as natural colours and good contrast levels. It's great for viewing your snaps after you've shot them. The screen's horizontally pivoting hinge allows you to tilt the panel up or down as well as twist it around.
Canon EOS Rebel T3i
The Canon EOS Rebel T3i is a complete picture-taking machine, especially when you use it with its 18-135mm, f/3.5-5.6 IS optional kit lens. The latest Rebel features an LCD that you can swing out and position at a variety of angles, as well as full HD video recording, wireless flash control, a respectable continuous-shooting mode, and the same high-resolution sensor as its predecessor, the EOS Rebel T2i. You can build an entire system around the T3i by purchasing additional lenses, but we encountered no problems handling common shooting situations with the kit 18-135mm zoom lens ($1200 for the kit configuration as of April 29, 2011); that versatile camera/lens combination will serve most hobbyists well. For tighter budgets, a kit with an 18-55mm lens is also available ($900 as of April 29, 2011), and a body-only version of the camera costs $800 (as of April 29, 2011). Performance-wise, the Canon Rebel T3i is outstanding. It currently resides at the top of our chart of the best DSLR cameras for less than $1000. At the heart of the EOS T3i is an 18-megapixel APS-C sensor powered by Canon's Digic-4 processor. It can record images up to 5184 by 3456 pixels. The optical viewfinder provides 95 percent view, and its sharp, adjustable 3-inch LCD shows 100 percent view with 1,040,000 dots of resolution.
CanonEOS Rebel T3i
The Canon Rebel T3i (also known as the Canon 600D or Kiss X5 in certain parts of the world) enters the fray just beneath Canon’s recently-released 60D, with the same articulated LCD, 18MP sensor, and integrated wireless strobe control. It’s got a slimmer profile, less heft, and more beginner-friendly features—at a slightly lower price, too. We found that the T3i reproduced colors accurately, though it generally favors slightly more vibrant colors rather than pure accuracy. The automatic mode was oversaturated a bit, with blues and yellows being the least accurate. If you’re looking for as much accuracy as possible, the “faithful” picture style is the best choice, as it offers near-perfect saturation and good accuracy. The automatic and standard picture styles that are available enhance sharpness artificially and are not as accurate as the faithful mode. For that reason, we used the faithful picture style to offer the most accurate test results possible. The Canon T2i had the highest color accuracy score of our comparison group, with the D5000 scoring just behind it. The T3i and Sony A55V posted nearly identical scores that were just a shade worse than those cameras. The Samsung NX10 ended up with good scores overall, but happens to be the worst of this particular lot.
Digital Cameras: SLR, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews
The 600D is Canon's follow-up to the best-selling 550D, which is likely to bow out of the market in the coming months. However, with the exception of the LCD swivel screen, the updates brought to this new model are nothing out of the ordinary. Canon has made a few minor tweaks to its star SLR to make a more confident and mature model with features such as compatibility with wireless external flashes. The main new feature of the 600D is, of course, the LCD swivel screen. Already seen and very much appreciated in Canon's 60D, this LCD flips out from one side of the camera and can then be swivelled into the position of your choice. It's also a logical addition to the brand's consumer cameras. The on-screen image is good quality with clear, sharp images (1,040,000 dots), excellent fluidity, wide viewing angles and good colour reproduction (Delta E 94 = 3.3) that's just a touch on the cold side (colour temperature approximately 7000 K). Naturally, the swivel screen comes in very handy in video mode or when using the camera on a tripod. For the rest, the 600D is a very good camera.
Canon EOS 600D / Rebel T3i review
Canon's EOS 600D - or Rebel T3i as it's known in North America - is the company's latest upper entry-level DSLR. Announced in February 2011, it's numerically the successor to the EOS 550D / T2i, although the older model is expected to remain on-sale at a lower price point. The EOS 600D / T3i is positioned between the EOS 550D / T2i and EOS 60D in Canon's current DSLR lineup, but at first glance it's much closer to the former. Externally the EOS 600D / T3i greatly resembles the 550D / T2i, with similar dimensions, weight, build, styling and controls. Internally it also shares the same 18 Megapixel sensor and core HD movie modes, not to mention the same viewfinder, AF system, continuous shooting, 3in 1040k pixel screen and metering, but as Canon tradition dictates, it inherits a number of key aspects from a higher-end model in the range (in this case the EOS 60D), along with at least one brand new feature. From the 60D, the EOS 600D / T3i inherits the fully articulated screen, allowing you to compose and shoot or film at unusual angles. It also features the 60D's multiple aspect ratios when shooting in Live View and Creative Filters which are applied during playback, along with manual control over audio recording levels in movies.
Canon Rebel T3i / EOS 600D Review (Preview)
Review based on a production Canon EOS 600D with Firmware 1.0.0 Ever since Canon introduced its original 'Digital Rebel' back in August 2003 - famously the first 'affordable' digital SLR - the company has continually developed and refined its entry-level line with ever-more-frequent releases, adding in more and more features in the process. So true to form, almost precisely a year to the day after the advent of the EOS Rebel T2i / 550D Canon launched its next model, predictably named the EOS Rebel T3i / 600D. As usual the 550D remains in Canon's range at a lower price point, with the EOS 1100D slotting in beneath it to round off the company's offerings to entry-level SLR users. The new kid on the block can most succinctly be described as a 550D with an articulated screen, that also incorporates many of the beginner-friendly features we first saw on the more enthusiast-orientated EOS 60D. Perhaps most notable of these is 'Basic+', a simple, results-orientated approach to image adjustments in the scene-based exposure modes, that allows the user to change the look of their images and control background blur without needing to know anything technical about how this all works.
Canon EOS Rebel T3i
If you didn't think the 60D was overpriced when it shipped, you will now. The Canon EOS Rebel T3i (aka the EOS 600D), the 60D's younger and cheaper sibling, offers the same basic camera with some corners cut--most notably a slightly less well-constructed body and a (purposely?) stunted burst shooting speed. You can also think of it as a slightly more expensive T2i, with the addition of an articulated LCD and a few features for the auto-always crowd. Either way, the T3i remains a solid if unexciting follow-up to its predecessor, although one that seems to cater more to videophiles than still shooters. That's not to say it compromises on still photo quality. Overall, the T3i has an excellent noise profile, unsurprisingly similar to that of the 60D's. JPEGs look very clean up through ISO 400, and even at ISO 800 you really have to scrutinize to see the beginnings of detail degradation; at ISO 1600 the noise becomes more obvious but still isn't too bad. ISO 400 is sort of my tipping-point sensitivity; to shoot action outdoors, I generally have to bump up the setting to at least ISO 400 in order to reach a sufficiently fast shutter speed.
Canon EOS 600D review (Rebel T3i review)
The EOS 300D was the first truly affordable DSLR back in 2003, and since then, Canon's budget/enthusiast models have evolved with evermore features and improved performance. This line of DSLRs has proved incredibly lucrative and successful, regularly at the top of the best-seller list and collecting a host of awards along the way, so any new model to come along is big news. The EOS 550D that the EOS 600D replaces (though it continues in the Canon DSLR line-up for now) is an incredibly well rounded camera in its own right, so how much better is the Canon EOS 600D? If you've taken a quick glance at spec of the Canon EOS 600D, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the specs for the EOS 550D have mistakenly been used instead. And that's because, internally at least, very little has changed or been tinkered with from the previous model that the Canon EOS 600D replaces. This starts with the sensor, with the EOS 600D sporting an identical 18MP resolution to the EOS 550D (and the 7D and 60D also), though Canon are at pains to point out that it's not an identical chip. This also means that the ISO range also remains the same, running from 100-6400, while it can be expanded further, to an ISO equivalent of 12,800 at its H setting.

We charge the battery and find out in our full review below, so read on.Take a quick glance at the Canon EOS Rebel T3i and you’ll hardly be surprised at its form and style. It looks just like many other entry-level and mid-range DSLRs on the market. Look closely at the back of the T3i, however, and you’ll see one of its coolest features: a 3-inch vari-angle LCD screen rated an impressive 1 million pixels (before you go wild, realize this is pixel count is just slightly more than the 921K of Nikon’s D7000). The key point is its flexibility compared to the Nikon, which has a fixed screen. With the Canon, you can hold the camera over your head or aim low while pressing the shutter. This opens a world of new angles for your photography, and you should definitely make use of it if you buy this camera. At the very least, you can turn it around so the screen is protected as you shoot with the optical viewfinder.Like every DSLR, the most important feature on the front is the lens mount.
