Canon EOS Rebel T1i
The Canon EOS Rebel T1i belongs to a relatively new class of camera: a still-inexpensive model wedged somewhere between bare-bones budget DSLRs that cost between $500 and $700, and almost-prosumer models approaching the $1,000 range, such as the Nikon D90. These cameras, while still beginner-friendly, offer faster speeds, higher resolution, and better image quality than their entry-level siblings, not to mention HD video. While we wish it performed better in harshly lit situations, the $799 T1i delivers fast speeds and solid image quality, making it a worthy competitor to the Editors’ Choice-winning Nikon D5000.At 1.1 pounds, the T1i is lighter than the Sony Alpha DSLR-A380, and its plastic build makes it feel much less substantial. Some might appreciate the lightness, but other photographers might prefer the more solid construction of the A380. The T1i looks almost identical to the Canon EOS Rebel XSi (now $649), a similar DSLR that lacks movie recording and utilizes slightly lower resolution (12.2 megapixels to the T1i’s 15.1). Similarly, there’s a mode dial on top, only this time there’s an added notch for movie recording. We prefer the approach that cameras such as the Nikon D5000 take; simply select a dedicated Live View button on the camera and press the center of the navigational pad to begin recording.
Canon EOS Rebel T1i DSLR Camera Review
In the last year, a handful of camera manufacturers have added HD video recording capabilities to their DSLRs. Nikon initially beat Canon in this race by introducing the $999, 12.3 megapixel D90. Canon wasn’t too far behind, though, with its $2,699, 21.1 megapixel EOS 5D Mark II that is capable of capturing 1080p (better than the D90’s 720p capabilities). At close to $3,000 however, the EOS 5D Mark II wasn’t a lot of competition for the D90 in the consumer space. Time and technology always march on and now you’ll find that Canon’s latest offering, the EOS Rebel T1i, is in a much better position to compete against the D90 and against the brand new 12.3 megapixel Nikon D5000. The 15.1 megapixel Rebel T1i not only beats the D90 and D5000 in terms of HD video capabilities (like the EOS 5D Mark II, the Rebel T1i can record 1080p movies), but it also comes with an MSRP of $899.99 with its EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. The Rebel T1i is the successor to the hugely popular EOS Rebel XSi. You’ll find many external similarities between the two models. They have similar weights and dimensions, but the newer Rebel T1i inherits a number of features from the higher-end EOS 50D and EOS 5D Mark II models such as the DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor and the ability to process full HD video.
Canon EOS 500D
The EOS 500D is the latest addition to Canon’s entry-level SLR lineup and sits on top of the 450D but below the mid-range 50D SLR. The camera is also designed to compete against Nikon’s D5000. In terms of look and design the 500D is similar to the 450D and as a result the camera is very easy to grip and shoot with, regardless of how big or small your hands are. The buttons and controls are spread across the body intuitively and are labeled well too, so you’ll never find yourself hunting for a particular button. In this respect the 500D differs from its predecessors because Canon has moved some of the buttons slightly but, thankfully, these changes have helped make the camera easier to work with. The camera isn’t too heavy either, so shooting even with long, heavier lenses won’t prove too tiring if you don’t have a tripod (we recommend a tripod if you intend to shoot distant subjects or opt for long shutter timings). This Canon features a 3-inch LCD screen and it supports ‘Live View mode’, which means you can shoot by using the LCD screen or, more traditionally for a SLR, using the viewfinder. The LCD screen is bright and offer great colour accuracy so you can shoot using the screen even if it’s mid-day.
