Many pros question the existence of the 1D Mark 4, or rather, they question the need for one. After having reviewed it, and spending the better part of a month with it, we cannot help but agree with this fraternity. Don't get us wrong, the Canon EOS 1D Mark 4 (simply called Mark 4 here on), is a great camera, but let's face it - an APS-H sensor in a Rs. 2.5 Lakh body was never meant to be a crowd puller. For the lost souls, let us explain. Canon has two sizes of crop sensors, the 1.6x crop (APS-C) factor, on cameras like the EOS 550D and 7D (reviewed here), and a larger 1.3x crop factor also called an APS-H sensor, that is about as common as a solar eclipse. Now the question is, Nikon has a much larger, full frame sensor-based camera in the Nikon D3s (reviewed here) for around the same price, and Canon's own EOS 5D Mark 2 (called 5Dmk2 here on) is available for around half the price, so why the need for an APS-H sensor, which is basically smaller than a full frame sensor, and that too in such an expensive body? The answer to that is no less complex, and if we were to guess, (and remember that this is our theory and not necessarily fact), would be binary.
The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV is a direct replacement for the company's previous 1D Mark III model, and supplements that camera's functionality with improvements in a number of areas. Perhaps most significant are the use of a new 16.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, and the use of dual DIGIC 4 image processors, which together allow both an increase in image resolution, and allow a huge step up in the camera's ISO sensitivity range while maintaining the 1D's 10 frames per second framerate. The Canon 1D Mark IV also gains a significantly upgraded autofocus system, a higher-resolution LCD display with improved reflection / glare resistance, and this year's must-have feature: high definition video capability. Other changes of note include support for UDMA CompactFlash cards, Peripheral Illumination Correction, a new generation of Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer technology, and quite a bit more besides. Pricing for the new Canon 1D Mark IV is set at US$4,999.00, with a ship date of late December 2009.
The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV ($4999 MSRP, body only) is a professional-level DSLR, if the price itself didn't clue you in. It offers just a few step-ups from the three-year old 1D Mark III, but they may be enough to sway the right shooter: 16 MP pictures, a faster computer inside for better auto focus, higher ISOs, and video recording. The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV is a big boy camera, no doubt about that. The fat grips on the side and bottom, the hefty weight, and the magnesium alloy body let you know immediately that this is designed for pros. Consumers looking to step up from their first DSLR may find this tough to get used to, but the excellent handling and customization possibilities make it worth investigating. The camera, like its predecessors, was designed to for shooting either horizontally or at a 90-degree angle, and offers a dedicated shutter button and dial for the latter. All the ports are sealed up tight, promising some kind of weatherproofing, though you hate to see that kind of thing put to the test without any guarantees. Overall, it feels like a very study camera.
Canon introduced the world to its EOS-1D line back in September 2001 and now, with the launch of the EOS-1D Mark IV, the line gets its fifth member. Being a professional SLR this camera is priced at a staggering US $5831.Photographers that worked with the older EOS-1D Mark III aren't in for a shock in terms of design and handling because the Mark IV is nearly a carbon copy; the body is built from magnesium alloy and is carefully sealed to protect from environmental damage. Thankfully, weight hasn't increased at all so, as before, the Mark IV with its battery weighs in at 1.4kg. The camera is very easy to get comfortable with and is fully customisable, so you can set it up to your preferred style of shooting. One area Canon focused on with the Mark IV is with its AF (Auto Focus) system. This isn't a surprise considering the main fault with the Mark III is AF related. With the Mark IV Canon introduces a completely new AF system though the company hasn't made any changes to the layout pattern of the camera's 45 AF points. Of those points 39 are setup to be cross-type points that are sensitive to both the horizontal and vertical axis. (The Mark III only featured 19 cross-type points.)In terms of photo quality the Mark IV is spectacular.
The Canon 1D Mark IV is Canon's most advanced DSLR to date with HD video, 102,400 ISO, and full customisation to suit the way you take pictures Canon dominated the sports and press market for many years but since the launch of Nikon's D3 the distribution is much more balanced. The EOS 1D Mk IV was launched within a month of Nikon's record ISO headlined D3s, as tested in last month's issue. Both cameras have the same end user in their sights: the professional sports or press photographer. Both cameras offer the same 102,400 ISO equivalent at the top end, fast shooting and impressive- sounding AF systems able to track fast- moving subjects. The D3s certainly lived up to expectations; will the Mk IV do the same? Canon 1D Mark IV Key featuresAuto Focus TrackingThe highly customisable AF system provides fine- tuning for the way the camera chooses to track subjects, from how many focus points it uses, to the speed at which it alters focus, and even whether to give priority to the subject or the chosen focus point. ISO rangeThe camera offers an impressive standard ISO range of up to ISO 12,800 and is the first Canon camera to offer an expanded mode that can provide a range from 50 up to a breathtaking 102,400 ISO equivalent.
