Not as lilliputian as a pico projector nor as big as an ultraportable, the BenQ Joybee GP1 Mini Projector is well suited for business users who want to travel light, but still need to show clients a crisp, bright presentation. At $499 (currently on sale for $399), the GP1 is a good deal, but a few changes would make it even better.Measuring 5.5 x 4.8 x 2 inches and weighing 1.2 pounds, the GP1 is slightly larger and heavier than the Dell M109S (4.1 x 3.6 x 1.5 inches; 0.8 pounds), another mini projector with an LED light source. Still, it easily fits in the palm of your hand. We just wish the power brick were smaller--it's the same weight as the projector itself. While the Dell M109S is squared off at every edge, the GP1 has smooth, rounded corners. It's encased in white plastic except for the top, which is a glossy black.A silver ring protruding from the top makes it easy to adjust the focus. The top of the Joybee GP1 features an indented circular panel of touch controls backlit in blue, and is easy to see in the dark. However, you have to know exactly where to press--not on the icon itself, but on the edge of the circle--otherwise, nothing will happen.
This compact LED projector displays good-looking images with or without a PC attached, but works best only in low lighting. At 1.4 pounds (3 pounds traveling weight), the compact BenQ Joybee GP1 ($499 as of 8/7/09) is the second-smallest LED projector in the group of seven projectors (four lamp-based and three LED-based) that we tested for our recent ultraportable projectors review. It has most of the basic functions you need for making presentations, but its brightness rating of only 100 lumens makes it a better choice for very small groups than for large conference rooms. The GP1's native resolution of 858 by 600 means you need to use a computer running at SVGA resolution to obtain the sharpest image possible when making presentations from a PC. Like the Samsung SP-P410M, this model is capable of playing slides, photos, and videos without being attached to a computer. Using its built-in media player (an integrated USB reader slot), you can supply the content on a USB flash drive or another mobile storage device. The GP1 also has a modest-sounding 2.0-watt mono speaker, but you'll probably want a more-powerful audio source when viewing DVDs and other videos.
This is an in-depth review of the BenQ GP1, also known as the BenQ Joybee GP1. The BenQ GP1 is an extended SVGA (858x600) resolution DLP - LED projector. This review has just been posted, and will be further proofed and a few additional images and/or comments will be added. The toughest thing about this review, seems to be where to start. A little background on this class of projector - which I'll call a mini-projector (as opposed to the much smaller Pico projectors), seems to be in order. We've reviewed a couple of other mini projectors in the past, most notably the Mitsubishi PK20 and the Boxlight Bumblebee. Neither was very successful, and that's not overly surprising. While those older mini projectors were about the same size, they are no match for the BenQ GP1 in brightness and contrast. And while the lumen claims varied a lot between those two, neither was able to hit even 40 lumens output when we measured. As a result, this BenQ is about three times as bright!
