Apple EarPod Headphones Review
If you buy an iPhone 5 or any current-model iPod, it will come with Apple's new EarPods, which were three years in the making and carry some major design improvements over existing Apple earbuds. And if you have an older Apple device, the $29 EarPods are a worthy upgrade from your current Apple gear. While they can't compete with noise-isolating canalphones, they are an excellent budget choice for general use.[Editor's Note: This review originally appeared on TechNewsDaily, a sister site to Laptopmag.com.]Click to EnlargeLooking like two ships out of "Star Wars," the EarPods have angled ports so the sound shoots directly into your ear canal. Four slots on each ‘pod let air move out of the hard plastic shell when the tiny speaker moves, creating acoustic resonances that boost the bass and widen the overall sound image. The speakers themselves have been redesigned with materials of varying flexibility, making them more efficient than regular earbud speakers.The oblong earpods fit a little more securely than circular earbuds: Using 3D models of lots of different ears, Apple arrived at a shape that had something in common with most of them.

Apple's original headphones were widely criticised (and rightly so), and they were long overdue an upgrade. So here's Apple's new contender, the EarPods. As far as we're concerned, the difference between the old model and these new headphones is so radical that the EarPods could be THE most revolutionary thing to come out of the last Cupertino keynote. Apple has ditched the earbud-style design of its former headphones. So while they may have lost their spongy tips a good while ago, the new Apple headphones bring a more considerable change in design, with more futuristic, more minimalist look that's driven home by the teardrop shape of each earphone. The earphones themselves are made from hard plastic, which obviously has a direct impact on comfort. In fact, you certainly start to feel that you're wearing them after a short while, and they can even become painful after about an hour of use. That's a shame but, ultimately, it's not too much of a problem for occasional use (e.g. on the tube, on a plane, etc.). However, the redesigned earphones do stay in your ears well. The in-line remote hasn't changed—it's exactly the same as the previous model, with playback and volume controls, call controls and a system that lets you answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.

After 11 long years, not counting a very minor mid-cycle update, Apple has finally completely redesigned its trademark white earphones that come bundled with every iPod and iPhone. And with good results. In fact, Apple may have achieved the impossible: The EarPods ($29 direct, if purchased separately) actually deliver some bass punch, without resorting to an in-canal, rubber-tipped design that accumulates ear wax (ick). Despite Apple's claims, the EarPods still don't fit everyone. But for doing what the Apple earbuds should have done all along—providing good sound quality and comfort on a budget—the EarPods are an easy recommendation. Remember that the goal here isn't for Apple to deliver a high-end pair of earphones that compete with our favorites from AKG, Sennheiser, or Shure. Instead, the question is, are the EarPods good enough that you won't feel like you need to upgrade immediately? And if they break and you need another set, or if you're looking to replace a worn pair on an older iPod or iPhone, should you get these, or head to Amazon or Best Buy and pick up a different pair? Let's talk about the unique design first.

In its unending search for perfection, Apple has decided to completely redesign its iconic white earbuds. The new design makes clever use of acoustic vents that enable air to flow in and out, resulting in improved low frequency sound.Design-wise, they sit somewhere between traditional earbuds and in-ear solutions. While they don't form a vacuum seal like in-ear noise isolating earbuds, they do go deeper than traditional buds.And because they don't seal themselves in, they feel a bit like they're going to fall out every now and again, but they never seem to.The EarPods - announced alongside the new iPhone 5, iPod touch, iPod nano, iOS 6 and iTunes - are also not noise cancelling or even noise-isolating, so you can still hear the world around you.
